Conference on Dag Hammarskjöld's Plane Crash: Dr Stuart Mole, Mama Chibesa Kankasa, and Sir Stephen Sedley
On 29 February 2024, the Institute of Commonwealth Studies (School of Advanced Study) and the UN Association Westminster hosted this conference to consider next steps for the current UN investigation into the tragic crash that killed the UN Secretary General and 15 others in Northern Rhodesia (now

Here Dr Stuart Mole (Fellow of the Institute of Commonwealth Studies) introduces a 2011 interview with Mama Chibesa Kankasa (Zambia’s Minister for Women’s Affairs 1969-88), who witnessed the arrival of Hammarskjöld’s plane in the sky near Ndola shortly before it crashed; and he reads a paper by Sir Stephen Sedley, a former judge of the Court of Appeal of England and Wales and Chair of the independent Hammarskjöld Commission (2012-13).
