The obelisks of Matabeleland: Cecil John Rhodes, conquest, and the Classics

I look at Classical presences in (and about) Zimbabwe, by following the actions of Cecil John Rhodes and the British South Africa Company (BSAC) in the annexation of the colony of Southern Rhodesia. Rhodes played a huge part in the colonisation of many countries in south- central Africa, including South Africa where he was once Prime Minister of the Cape Colony. Adopting a materialist approach, as well as a study of personalities, I look at the material remains of classical inspired monuments relating to Rhodesia / Zimbabwe. Among other things, the British South Africa Company set off to erect classical inspired monuments like triumphal arches, obelisks, friezes, and statues to celebrate its conquest. Most of these monument have been moved to Zimbabwean museums and parks. The memorials were erected for various reasons, but usually to celebrate colonial conquest and to commemorate fallen members. Some of these memorials were erected in battle sights, mass graves. Examples include the Shangani battle memorial, the Matabele War memorial in Gweru, Zimbabwe. I also ask questions about the role of the Classics in the British ( or Rhodes’) imperial project. Doubtless, the discipline played a role is second to none, as can be seen in all the classical inspired memoriae dedicated to Rhodes and the BSAC in and about Zimbabwe. Of much more importance, however, is the journey of these classical inspired memories, and what has happened to them over time; for most have been pulled down (sometimes defaced) since the advent of political independence in 1980. In some cases, colonial statues have been replaced by those of local heroes like Joshua Nkomo in Bulawayo, and Mbuya Nehanda in Harare. As such, I will also look at the place of Classics in the decolonization project.
