Thank you for this very informative video. It is very helpful to see what tubers look like when they are rotting or areas that are suspicious of rot and how to identify them. Last winter I lost an entire mound of tubers to rot. I didn't realise I could've cut off any that were still healthy. But mostly that was because I wasn't sure how the tubers were supposed to look as they overwinter. This will be very helpful to me this winter when I try to overwinter my Nadia Ruth dahlia tubers. Fingers crossed.

Hi, thanks for the comment, yes you have to be vigilant and catch rot early, otherwise it can spread to the whole tuber clump, or even the box full, and you will loose them all. The sniff test goes a long way - if you think you can smell rot, get in there and find the culprit. Good look with yours this year.

Great & methodical video - thank you... It would be helpful to discover how the tubers that you hopefully have 'rescued' turn out next summer (2023). I very much admire your diligence and practice in cleaning and disinfecting the tools and your working area. This autumn, I've used surgical spirit in cleaning my pruners etc, which I hope have reduced any spread of contamination. Else I will start using hydrogen peroxide.

Thank you AsheU. Yes I hope there will be a return on the effort. Surgical spirit is fine, as is 10% bleach solution or hydrogen peroxide. Good habits usually pay off in the long run . Good luck with your growing!

@@MoorfieldFarmFlowers Thank you for your prompt reply. I have two varieties of dahlias which I grew last summer in containers. I have not dug these up. I have covered up the top in about 2 inches of (dry) pine needles. I have brought them into my (unheated) conservatory. I sense that I should not water these at all. Can you add anything further that I should do.

Apologies Ashe, I missed relying to this. All sounds fine, yes no water, and protect from frost if there is a chance - wrapping in a blanket should do it if frost can get get to them.

I have a some clumps where most of the tubers are softer than a potato but not mushy. When I cut into a few they were white all the way through. It seems like they have a lot of moisture. I think it rained the day before I dug them up a few weeks ago. Do you think they'll rot over the winter?

Hi Darrin, it's difficult to be sure from your description. If they are rotten it will become more apparent as time goes by. Keep them separate of course, and observe for a few weeks.

I have two varieties of dahlias (Kilburn Fiesta & Brecon Ballerina) which I grew in containers in 2022 summer. I decided not to dig these up. I have covered up the top in about 2 inches of (dry) pine needles. I have brought the two containers into my (unheated) conservatory. On sunny days, I place the containers outside to ensure they remain below 10C. I sense that I should not water these at all. Can you add anything further that I should do.

That all sounds good Ashe I cant add anything. Agree, don't water until growth restarts.

If I understand well, you have to wait till you see sprouts before watering? Mine are still in containers in my shed as well. The ones I dug up were rotten but those in my pots are still firm. I don't want to abuse them as well 😉

Great video! To clarify if a side of the body is rotten, and I cut it out. Does the tuber have a chance? Or is it just the bottom you can cut out?
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers 3 месяца назад
Hi Monnie, yes you can cut away any of the tubers which are rotting, so long as there is some healthy tubers remaining in the clump. I hope it works out for you.

@@MoorfieldFarmFlowers what about an individual tuber?
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers 3 месяца назад
Ah, ok I understand you are referring to a single tuber. I would say a single tuber with some rot along the side it not salvageable.
