Dahomey Passacaglia was inspired by the magnificent monument on the coast of Benin (formerly French Dahomey): The Door of No Return (Ouidah). It charts the abduction of slaves by rival nations from elsewhere in the African continent; the forced march to the Slave Coast; the sometimes-lethal journey across the Atlantic; and forced labour in Antigua. Dahomey is a passacaglia over a ground bass. The minor pentatonic scale and ground bass ostinato pay homage to West African folk music. A dance of memory and nostalgia for lost village life.
