Here is a longer video of the McQuay (now Daikin Applied) WMC magnetic bearing water cooled centrifugal chiller. In this video we do a startup with a large cooling load, let it pull down to temperature, then slowly remove the load and let it shut down.
I edited out the middle of the video to avoid boring you to tears. ;)
In case you're curious, this was filled with my iPhone 6.

It is very impressive , it is cool to see all the operation on the monitor and it is very quiet . Thank for sharing your video . I will recommend it to my director when we are replacing the TRANE centrifugal compressor chiller . Have a good day .

Thanks for the comment. We're seeing significant energy savings (greater than 40%), especially on moderate days where outside temperature and humidity are relatively low.

Love they can get the superheat way way down and not flood the compressors. They have very precise control over system operations. Not long ago we were punching tubes on a York YMC.....258 tubes....get boring punching tubes all day.

Hi - really good video - just one question - a Spec. Item for TURBOCOR Chillers is that they have VSD Control with Variable Speed Drive between 10% and 100% which one would assume means that the Capacity Control is between these limits. Looking at the video. the Compressor speed was almost constant until the compressor stopped and also the IGV's appeared to be at 100% at the same time. The Power Input dropped, but how is the capacity control achieved - it appeared to be almost 2 stage control - Compressor 1 + 2 Operating in an On / Off Mode. Just Curious..? Brendan
@bnkwupt
@bnkwupt 5 лет назад
Hi Brendan, Capacity is controlled by a number of things - motor speed, vane position and the electronic expansion valve. To prevent stalling of the refrigerant flow, the compressor speed never drops below 80% except during startup. One compressor will run up to full load, then the system starts the second compressor to add capacity, at which point both compressors work together to maintain the leaving chilled water temperature. In this video, as building load is satisfied, both compressors ramp down to about 80%, then one compressor will turn off, leaving the remaining compressor to handle the load. As load decreases further, the one remaining compressor will slow itself down from 100% to about 80%, before finally shutting off. Note that motor speed and output capacity are related, but not at a 1:1 ratio. 80% speed is the lowest and 100% speed is maximum capacity (except during startup).

Nice chiller! Under low humidity & OA temp operating conditions, dramatically higher delta Ts are possible (16 - 20 degrees.) In order to achieve these efficiency improvements, the condenser and ChW pumps will need to be slowed down - but not less than minimum flow... The CUP sequence of operation should be configured to provide minimum energy use for the sum of the chilled and condenser water pumps & fans.
@bnkwupt
@bnkwupt 5 лет назад
This installation has fixed speed pumps for both chilled water and condenser water. We have another installation with variable speed pumps, but it doesn't actually seem to save any energy on these particular machines.

Hi, thank you for the video, it was very enlightening! I am intending to develop a way to preddict the amount of power it is possible to save acording with the temperature set up in the evaporator or the condensador. Do you have any idea how to do that?
@bnkwupt
@bnkwupt 5 лет назад
Energy efficiency of the chiller depends on the design of the unit. For example, this centrifugal unit is most efficient when the condenser water temperature is at or below 72F. Screw chillers like higher condenser water. Some people will tell you that it's better to run a slower cooling tower fan speed and hotter condenser water temperature, but for this particular type of unit, the energy required to run the tower fan at a higher speed is far less than the energy required to run the compressors at a higher speed (to overcome the increased lift pressure from the higher condenser water temp). It's complicated, but most manufacturers will provide charts that explain the most efficient operating conditions.

I've done dozens of plants, and there isn't any one answer to this. Plant efficiency depends on dozens of factors, and the most successful optimization efforts I've worked with have involved complex models of a particular plant and optimizing all the flows and temperatures through the system based on load, weather, chiller type, etc. And unfortunately, all of this will be for naught if the connected loads are operating efficiently. Efficiency is everything from the cooling tower fan to the damper on the VAV box.

How many tons is your chiller ? What is the maximum RPM of the compressors when they are at fully loaded and the vanes fully opened ?
@bnkwupt
@bnkwupt 6 лет назад
It's rated at 180 tons nominal capacity. Max compressor RPM depends on condenser water temperature. Perhaps 35,000?
@mzunguwrites6085

Your flow rate remained 0. Did you have a sensor out you didn't mention? You mentioned banging the tubes, does this mean you are running straight water not glycol? If so why not? Also it would be really interesting to hear a discussion of what happens to the chiller during a power blinkage or outage?
@bnkwupt
@bnkwupt 7 лет назад
mzungu Writes this unit doesn't monitor flow rate other than yes/no.
@bnkwupt
@bnkwupt 4 года назад
Each compressor has a super-capacitor that will maintain the magnetic field long enough for the compressors to coast down to a safe and complete stop. This unit is running straight water with treatment chemicals - no glycol. Glycol has is less efficient at transferring heat and is unnecessary in this application because all of the chilled water plumbing is inside of the building. If the chiller was outside, glycol would be necessary.

Marty Lynchian at maximum output, it only consumes about 110,000 watts. On an average summer day, maybe 60,000. No need to notify the power company.

It was a McQuay when we bought it and it says both Daikin and McQuay on the unit. Daikin bought the McQuay factory in Staunton, VA where this unit was manufactured. Just because Daikin bought out McQuay doesn’t mean this unit isn’t a McQuay.
