Ah-ha another leaky white insulation line set! Mikey I’ve removed line sets with that insulation on them and found so many pin holes man. Best case scenario replace all line set equipment should be good. There’s been a recall on that line set, I think unannounced; maybe throughout the HVAC industry that they leak. The chemical they used on insulation interacts with the copper and causes pin hole with the water formed inside the said line set . Big problem here in CT, replaced countless white line sets. Food for thought!

I changed 3 white linesets this week and have 2 to do tomorrow all leaking I always suggest to change the linesets first if it’s those ones cuz they’re most likely leaking if not will leak sooner or later

From an experience point of view? Was the wisest decision! Have went down the road of line set R&R and new charge and in the end? Didn’t fix the problem! System would hold vacuum for 12 hours and marginal lost .. but under heat environment? Condenser coil have an ultra fine leak that didn’t show up with soap nor dye but Occasionally could pick up but not enough to find it. So in the end? complete R&R new system. So the customer made the best decision ❤

Good video. So if I understand what you were explaining, if there is a leak in the lineset the best option is to replace the system? Why can’t you recover the remaining refrigerant back into the outdoor unit or a recovery tank, replace the lineset and then recharge the system as needed? Is that not an option for this homeowner? The homeowner decides of course but I didn’t hear that option unless I missed it. I have a Daikin mini split and was just curious about this video in particular. Thank you sir.

As just another homeowner, I have the same question! My bet is that whatever the crappy copper that was used for the lines ends up making its way through the whole system causing leaks in the indoor and outdoor unit as well. That would mean any work done rerunning lines or replacing refrigerant is just delaying the inevitable. I'd love to hear the Doctor weigh in though!

@@mjbates I want to hear from Mike also. The homeowner seemed really knowledgeable so I was surprised he didn’t want to try to replace the lineset since he had four more years on a parts warranty from Daikin. His decision though, so he must have thought that was the best choice. Either way, sucks that happened while still under warranty. That’s why it’s important to get extended labor warranties and ask if the manufacturer offers extended warranties too that include refrigerant leaks. My Daikin Atmosphera has those additional warranties from Daikin called Asure.

@@briantantlinger7936 ⁠Hi, I didn’t say the warranty applied to the lineset, I was referring to the parts warranty. Getting a new lineset I would assume has to be cheaper than buying an entire new system. He still had 4 years left (2028) on the parts warranty (and I’m aware that doesn’t cover the lineset or refrigerant). I just thought it was odd to not just replace the lineset that is all external and still have a system under warranty in case of other breakdowns for covered parts. I’m not the homeowner here though, I’m just observing and enjoying the content. Have a great day sir.

@Ryan-RM I would assume the roi on labor would not be worth. Lineset+labor+refrigerant=not worth in my opinion. Also what if the lineset wasn't the problem? What if by chance there is a leak in the outdoor coil. At that point all repairs up to that point are a waste. Replace all 100% fix.

likely got sold that unit as supplementary cooling/heating, for a problem room/second floor with lack of ducts and no good way to run them.

The ductless split systems we work on (Mitsubishi and Fujitsu only come pre charged for x amount of line set we have to add so many ounces per extra length

I am a little disappointed you did not pull out a electronic leak detector, and check first, before you did any thing, the unit under operation for leaks at the compression fittings. They are where you will find most of the leaks on these systems. Mainly due to improper installation, and not using the correct flaring tool, or special torque wrench. Also the unit being that old, the schrader valves might have been the source of the leak. I would at least do that, before condemning the line set, or any system components. It's relatively quick, and might save you a lot of unnecessary trouble.

Since you mention fujitzu mini splits... I've come across 3 under 5 year old systems that at the compressor compartment have leaked out refrigerant. Have you heard anything about others running into this problem? Appreciate what you do Mike. Keeping real as I do as a tech in California.

yes, they pretty much all have a "total max line length", as well as "minimum length" per head and or total also. too short increases noise from the indoor unit(coil is like a big speaker) and they can start surging the compressor/expansion valves due to rapid changes without buffer.

Hey Mikey, of Mikey Pipes Plumbing not easy being cheesy. I like your podcast/social media. Daikin makes some pretty equipment, problems with control panel sometime. Again leak might be at the flange connection at outdoor unit, over tight connection. But again, refrigerant leaks out at a microscopic level. Most fully charge system will last about 8 to 12 years. But again, want to go back up on broke back mountain again. Love you buddy, the horror, the horror, the horror, the horror.

It's funny how much you guys can charge the customer in the US while here in Cyprus and other countries in europe i believe the cost of repairing cant reach that high and the cost of refrigerant and sealant or copper pipes is the same.This job can be done in 3-4 hours costing no more than 500-600 euros.

I gave Dan a try. We got zero support from the manufacturer. The distributor is mediocre at best and I’m gonna have mediocre tech-support or might as well stay with Fujitsu and that’s who we’re with.

I have to ask.....when DOES it make sense to add a sealant to the system? I understand it may work FOR NOW, but if were talking pinholes, could it be worth it? Personally unless something catastrophic happens or i lost ALL charge id see it maybe worth a shot. Worst case, it buys some time and i save up for a system. Best it fixes the leak and my unit runs another 10 years. Not an hvac tech at all, just a keyboard jockey trying to understand the hesitance of a sealant if the leak is small
