Daily Driven, Modified 1968 Porsche 912 - One Take

This Porsche 912 is a spectacular example that is not only fast, spotless, and sorted, but also the owner Kevin Lynch's daily driver in Los Angeles. Underneath the bonnet lies a Benton Performance-built 1.7L four-cylinder engine with forged internals, hot cams, and twin spark, so rather than the standard 92-horsepower, this 912 makes upwards of 130 horsepower. This is a complete, sorted build with great suspension, brakes, and a clean, comfortable interior. Some (incuding me, maybe) think it's kinda silly to go this far in a 912 rather than a 911, but if you're going to build a 912, Kevin's car should be the template.
Check out Kevin's IG for more photos of the 912!
/ kevin.lynch
Check out
www.wolfpack901... - It's a foundation started by Kevin and his wife, to fund paid apprenticeships in vintage auto restoration and race support, giving a young person without experience a potential start at a shop, minimally building a resume, potentially permanent employment if they do well. It’s good for the youth to get to work, good for the “masters” to pass on their trade, and good for the car owners in that it creates a sustainable community. We are selling some cool branded product (more to come), and taking donations, to fund each.
Complete Build Sheet:
1968 Bahama Yellow Porsche 912 - factory original color, numbers matching car - nickname is the “Bahammer”, a blend of words melted together late one night at the shop after too much work, too little sleep, and just enough alcohol (not my creation, I am just the recipient here)
Engine mods:
1.7 twin spark motor, with: knife edge crank, custom forged aluminum pistons, carrillo rods, high lift cam, enhanced valves and hardware, modified twin Weber 44s, custom twin spark ignition with twin hot coils and twin 3 pin CDI boxes
Gearbox:
5 speed 901 “dog leg” gearbox with modified gear set and short shift kit
Suspension:
Custom torsion bar, sway bars front and rear, modified disc brakes, corner balanced and slightly lowered stance
Exterior:
Paint done by Shane at East Auto Body, in my opinion one of the best single stage Glasurit painters in California; factory Fuchs “deep six” wheels (found in a parking lot sale in Stuttgart when visiting the factory one weekend), skinned with Yokohama S-Drive 15x205x55 tires; euro-spec lighting on all the corners, with LED bulbs used in all the indicators and gauges (but I did keep the 1968 US only side indicators, a religious debate among 1968 Porsche owners); H1 headlights from John Audette in Oregon, modified to use an HID element (super bright, one of a kind)
Interior:
RS 380 mm steering wheel; modified gauges with “911 style” data, plus a few additions; sport seats in leather with nickel grommets from GTS Classics in Austin; aluminum floor boards; custom shift knob from a friend in Mexico (the first and original “victory flag” that has now been copied by countless many); Heuer triple plate with a Super Autavia (found in a Portuguese Navy surplus yard sale, another weekend story), a Monte Carlo 3 button, and an Auto Rallye - three of 26 time pieces (so far) I have found, improved, and traded to arrive at a few “signature” sets as a configuration on my cars; Bluetooth connectivity for phone and music; RS style custom door release

I have a 1968 912. I bought it for my wife for our first anniversary. She was so excited till she looked for the AC and there was none. After that, she told me it was mine. She's gone now and I still have the 912. I think if it was the other way around, I would be missing the 912 more. 911s are very cool, but the VW simplicity with the Porsche return will never be matched again.

It’s a rich mans game to own one of these. Growing up, I had neighbor with a 1968 912 in beautiful shape that sat in his driveway un driven for 15 years. He had owned it since 1982. When I turned 21, I asked him if he would sell the car to me. He replied that people come to his front door every week to ask if he had any plans to sell the car and that he wanted to hand it down to his grandson. I haven’t seen that car in his driveway for a year. My guess is that someone gave him an offer he couldn’t refuse.

Jane Leelavathi just going off a neighbor of mine who had a rare (but not very valuable) Toyota Soarer active model, UZZ32 - only around 800 ever made. It was in very good condition and everything worked perfectly. He gave it to his son who stripped all the active suspension technology out of it and turned it into a trashy drift car before writing it off a few months later. :-(

My mom passed her 69 912 to me, she bought it new in 1969. I can say I rode in the back seat in comfort(that was a long time ago). It is a great little car, when we found out how valuable it is. We were in shock, if you don't want offers keep the car in a garage. The most important thing, I cannot emphasize enough. You have to drive the car, letting any car sit isn't a good thing.

don't worry guys. whatever comes next will be good. trust me this is one of the few channels where peoples opinions are considered and valued, and the videos are done mainly for fun not for money. so even if we get less quantity of one takes there will be something similar and great, or at the very least our feedback will not just be considered but appreciated which already makes this one of the best automotive channels out there without even looking at the content. I remember getting answers/explanations/opinions to my feedback from klappman or farah so many different times. It disgusts me to see greedy automotive youtubers pretend I'm part of their life/job/channel even though they only care because of the money. I feel like the audience of TST is basically the opposite of the vehicle virgins audience, meaning there are drivers instead of kids in this comment section. we can't force more one takes but that's life if he made more one takes without enjoying it then it wouldn't be to much fun to watch anyway. this channel will always be worth a subscription though unlike 90% of the rest.

@TheSmokingTire
@TheSmokingTire 6 лет назад
“Not crazy,” of course, is relative to what Porsche horsepower costs elsewhere. A standard rebuild for the stock 3.2L motor in my 87 Carrera is $20,000. No high performance anything, just a stock rebuild. So while yes, $20,000 is a lot of money, it’s about the minimum you could spend for a hot rod engine of any kind from a Porsche Racing shop.

@mattwasilewicz9677
@mattwasilewicz9677 6 лет назад
It a lot, but not ridiculous, especially considering it is somewhat specialty work. I spent 15k building out the 454 in my Chevelle, and that was having a friend of mine who buils engines do it for me who barely charged for labour. You would be surprised how things add up when you are replacing basically every part in an engine, and having to get machining work done. However, you basically end up with a brand new engine afterwards though.

Art Vandelay that's what they said about the hotrod/muscle cars. 50 year old guys using Man maths when restoring the base model versions of the car they foamed over and by pricing the average car out from others, people lose out on growing up with it as these aren't used by regular people.

@mattwasilewicz9677
@mattwasilewicz9677 6 лет назад
Not really. If you have ever fully built a high performance motor on an older car, starting with a bare block, its not really that insane of a cost. Its a lot different then buying a Chevy crate motor that is still mass produced. I've gone through it before in one of my cars, and almost spent that much, and that was having a friend do it who builds engines, and didn't really charge much for labour. Heck, a top quality paint job will cost you 10k nowadays
@MH-ev3wr
@MH-ev3wr 5 лет назад
How many 1.7 Liter naturally aspirated engines do you know of that make 140 hp? You realize that 1.7 Liters is just over 100 cubic inches, right? If you do a simple ratio then an equivalent 454 should be making just over 600 hp. How many 7.4 Liter naturally aspirated engines do you know that make 600 hp? I'll wait. The Hellcat engine, you say? Sorry, supercharged. The Corvette ZR1 engine, you say? Sorry, supercharged.
@europlebr3216

M H Not a fair comparison. Those enormous engines are usually pushrod which rely on their enormous size to produce power, and not to mention the ridiculous torque they output..

@cliffordbradford8910 6 лет назад
Is it really that much for a base 912 engine? I mean they only stopped building VW Bugs in Brazil like 15 years ago, I think you should be able to source late model engines from Mexico or Brazil for a relative song. Of course they don't come with forged internals but for an easy to work on DD it'd be a cheap way to go.

I absolutely love this car, but I have to jump on the "20k is way too much" bandwagon. Isn't the 4 cylinder supposed to be a VW engine like from a Ghia? One of the reasons my dad liked his 4 cylinder 914 was the lack of platinum embossed Porsche logos on all the parts. For $20k I'd be prepared to disregard the purity and put a K20 in the back of that thing, and then buy a spare K20 with the money left over. Or get three whole, clean 986 Boxsters. For the price of a 4 cylinder "Porschwagen" engine rebuild. EDIT: Upon further research, the 912 uses a Porsche designed engine originally out of the 356. It's still pushrod tractor tech, but replete with the platinum logo etchings and pretentions of unparalleled "qvality". What. Ever. I don't think the K20 powered Hondorsche is sacrilegious enough now. I'm thinking more like Kawasaki H2; the old 2-stroke one. "Oh yeah, it's still air cooled, and vintage. That sound? Yeah it's an aftermarket Denco expansion exhaust. No it doesn't need rings, it's supposed to smoke like that." Porschesaki!

Man-o-man, I love 912s, have since I was a kid. I've wanted one for 42 years! HOWEVER, this was a good vid for me to watch so I can finally and for good just let the f__k go of that dream. $18-20K for a stock rebuild and $22K for this motor is not crazy? Please Matt, I love your work, but just know you are in another world from us peons. S__t, $22K is nearly 3X the most I've ever paid for a car. It's enough to drive one to drink.........

EvendimataE thats bc you can get in a crash in a new mini and not die. Also modern comforts like ac, stereo, etc are included

Okay, so now someone get Matt a drive in an Alpine 110 or 1600GT,. Y'know, so he can understand what it's like to have 200 kilos less to haul around, with maybe 140 to 180 hp, and a rear end that doesn't have the '70's Porsche handling issues.

912's are the most astonishing, glorious piece of jewelry ever made. They are absolutely sublime and I won't feel accomplished until I'm holding that wonderfully finished leather steering wheel.
