DAILY SINGING PRACTICE // - The 'C' Major Scale
In this lesson, we’re looking at singing exercises for the C major scale, the first mode.
These kinds of singing drills are great at warming you up, strengthening your voice, improving your tone, and tightening your intonation and interval accuracy.
These are the kind of exercises that you should be doing daily if you're wanting to improve you're voice or brush off the cobwebs and regain your former glory.
I really can't say it enough, scales are everything. SCALES ARE EVERYTHING!!!!... :) but really, no matter what you are trying to get better within your music studies, scales can act as a vehicle to get you there. Doesn't matter what instrument you play, or how long you've been playing, scale practice is the best thing for developing those mad skills.... also learning other people's music, stuff that pushes you, stuff you find hard at first...
...yep...
Do those two things and it's impossible not to get better.
Any questions, leave them in the comments. :)
Hope you're well.

awesome to hear it helping mate. sadly I haven't got a Chromatic scale exercise video yet, should def get on it, it's an important scale for sure. until then though, I know the "Jacobs Vocal Academy" channel has a chromatic scale cycling exercise which is pretty good. The one I've been sending my choir members to recently though is the video "Fun Chromatic Scale Vocal Exercise - I Will Sing My Half Tones" on the channel Dots Singing, it goes for about 2 mins. That excersise is the most stock standard one you'll find pretty much, and it's really good, kinda lame, but nonetheless good. check them out, hope they help, and I'll get on one of my own to throw in the mix :)

So I kinda have one already... it's the enharmonic or D flat though, (C# major) all the same notes, just the other names for the sharps/flats. D flat is definitely a more common signature though but I figured It was one or other in terms of sharps or flats... soz hope the C# series helps though. 😉🤙🤙

How many days should I sing this to be 'perfect' with relative pitch ?
@KillaManZilla
@KillaManZilla 3 года назад
Oof, super good question, it's gonna take a while though, I'll say that straight off the bat. Developing my ears to a decent level took a couple of years but I wasn't working on it every day by any measure so it can definitely be honed faster. These vids are good for ear training for sure but I would say that actually transcribing a bunch of music did waaaaaaay more for my ears than any other exercise I've done. I made a point of transcribing a few Bill Evens piano solos, they really helped. I also transcribed a few of the horn section breaks in a few Sublime songs, again super helpful. a bunch of other stuff also... I don't think it really matters what you transcribe, just as long as you do some. Jazz is pretty good for it but might be a little challenging if you've never transcribed anything before. If you're looking for a goal though, instead of time, I'd probably set a quantity target. Maybe pick one of your favourite albums and transcribe all vocal parts for piano or guitar or some other treble instrument (chords also if you can). the next step is definitely an extra mile but also writing down the parts in either tab or notation locks it all in again from another angle. So yeah, transcribing in my opinion is the by far best exercise for developing aural skills. These vids are good for getting a handle on the skill, or getting the tools in your tool belt so to speak, but transcribing is actually using those tools and I found that was what really levelled my ears up personally. I hope that helps.... Ill say a good place to start is having a really solid feel for 5ths and octaves from a root note in isolation, then get 4ths down. having a few reference points Is helpful. for those notes the ones I used were: Octave= first interval of 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow'. (the notes in the first word "some-where") 5th= first interval of "Scarbourgh Fair" (on the words "are you going") 4th= first interval of 'Amazing Grace' (First word on the 'A-May' part of 'Amazing') finding one for every interval is pretty good and ideally, you want to have one for ascending and descending intervals, adding one at a time is the best way to do it though, don't try to learn them all at once, it's way harder. soz for the rant... hope that help :)

I am quite new at signing, strangling with ear training and this video helps a lot...do you have any other ecommendations?
@KillaManZilla
@KillaManZilla 2 года назад
nice one and yeah ear training is a bit of a grind, it really does take a while to develop. I guess a couple of things to think about could be getting reference points for each of the twelve intervals inside an octave (24 if you include descending intervals). the channel 'David Bennett Piano' has a good video called 'Songs that will help you identify ascending intervals', that's a good place to start although you might want to come up with your own reference songs. Every trained musician will have a list of these songs in the back of their mind. the next thing that is great for building the skill is some sort of testing element built into your practice. there are a bunch of websites and apps that all work really well though I can't name any off the top of my head...soz.. As best as a youtube comment can, I'd probably say write down a list of 12 reference songs for accending intervals and get kinda familiar with them, then hunt down some sort of ear training app or website for testing. give it 15 mins or so of testing a day for 2 months and I'd imagine your aural skills will take a massive leap up. It's a pretty rough skill to develop, good luck :) ...

Solid question, I kinda just wanted these videos to really focus in on pitch so I ditched all the rhythm elements. No time signatures or bar lines or any notes other than 1/4 notes. Its pretty much 4/4 though maybe a couple of exercise that feel more like 3/4, the ones with 3 note groupings. 🙂👍

@KillaManZilla
@KillaManZilla Год назад
Yeah, it can be really tricky ky for sure when you're starting out with this stuff. No.stress though mate, if you able to hear that the notes aren't quite matching up, then that means it's simply a matter of muscle memory. First I'd say probably sitting down with a piano and slowly going through each note and matching it, just sit with it until it starts to flow and be sure to try and hit the majority of your range when training , a heavier focus on your mid range to begin with wouldn't be a bad approach. If you wanted to go a bit further, theres a program called 'auralia' that's specificly designed for ear training (sadly it's not free, like $60-ish, but theres a free trail) It's not quite what your after in terms of specifically targeting singing exactly, but it will work in conjunction with other practices to speed up the learning, hearing and identifying the notes and singing them are kinda two sides of the same coin. So yeah I guess in summary, - smash out a free trial of 'Auralia' and do it every day for as long as the trial lasts. -Sit down with a piano for 15 - 20 mins a day for like 2 weeks and just practice matching notes, -Continue practising scales and take some notes on the exact notes or intervals you're having problems with, then target it with your piano accompaniment singing practice. I wont lie, It takes a little time to get these skills together, but they'll serve you across so many musical areas and instruments. It's a solid feather to get in your cap... good luck mate and soz on the late reply, been a busy week. 😉🤙

@KillaManZilla
@KillaManZilla 2 года назад
Cheers mate, happy to be helping. If you're looking for that hard-hitting torture kind of practice, you want to go to interval recognition testing. it's been a while since I've done this kind of stuff, it's super dry but gets results. For developing aural skills, here's a website I found that seems to have a pretty good tool. if you need help understanding how to use it let me know.👉 www.teoria.com/en/exercises/ii.php I will say start at a level where you can get at least half right and then expand from there. this tool has full diatonic options in descending and ascending intervals but if you haven't done this kind of stuff before then I'd recommend starting with just the first 5 notes in the major scale ascending, then as you get better add the rest of the notes in the major scale. Once you've got a bit of a handle on that, then go to the minor scale. after those two are down then you'd have the tools to tackle the chromatic scale (1 octave).....then do it all again for descending. (once you've got ascending, descending is a lot easier)... For targeting intonation aka stop being flat or sharp, then doing your practice over a drone tone is good, you can really feel the notes 'lock in' when bouncing off a drone. one thing though is you'll gravitate to the Pythagorean interval values or the 'true values' in hertz for the key you practice in, and that's not the intonation of western music, generally it's in 'just intonation.. honestly that difference doesn't really matter that much and you'll naturally adjust on the fly if your ear is good enough. keep it in mind though... 15 mins 4-5 times a week, ideally every day if you have the discipline, and in 6 months you'll have the skill roughly speaking and it'll only get stronger from there. It's a really useful one for music.. I'll say again though this stuff sucks to practice, at least that's how I found it, but if you can stick it out for a couple of months it's well worth it. soz for the rant, good luck.

Quick question, i sing this and the minor version often and wondered, this is in c obviously so will I be getting the optimal practice? Would you recommend singing other scales like f for instance too or what would you say is best?
@KillaManZilla
@KillaManZilla 2 года назад
solid Q, I guess the low effort answer is it depends on your focus. So if you were wanting to extend your range then yeah these should help you push above or below. The sweet spot for most instruments though including voice, is usually around the middle of its range, so in saying that your best//richest singing tone is probably around the middle of your range and that's probably where you want to be your strongest and do the most practice....you still want a bit of a range though but it's not everything. another consideration though is you kinda do want to practice in every key just for your body and your ears to be somewhat familiar, but that doesn't necessarily mean expanding the range to do so. Billy holiday was flawless in every key and only had like 2 octaves or something and that was more than enough to be considered one of the greats.... then people like Mariah Carey have like a 6 1/2 octave range or something soooo... I'm of the camp that you're better off working with your strengths so I'd say sticking with your mid-range will get you stronger faster. hope that helps : )
