There's a saying in my dojo, "The uke is never wrong". It means that no matter what your ukes do you should be prepared and adjust to it. If your not prepared for a street fight perhaps it's because you've been correcting your ukes and/or they have been going thru the motions.

Strictly speaking, aikido is daito ryu with some minor changes. The influence here come from two angles: 1. Technical, since I believe aikido emphasizes aiki way more than ju and 2. intent, since the goal is explicitly NOT destruction. You'll find that most techniques are also in most jiujitsu schools, especially modern ones. But changing the way you do them, from set up to what you do after the execution, it just becomes very very different.

At last, A Sensei with instructions I can absorb, learn, repeat and execute. I fully understand I should enroll in a Dojo, for hands on training, truly without question. Still,... This video training has shown me moves of superb skill, I may then build upon. That is,... when I am in my first hands on class. With great respect. I thank you.

Well, that is the whole point that Kobayashi Sensei is making (albeit not openly) the difference for the Japanese is a bit more subtle than what we think in the West. Olivier Gaurin addresses this point in the interview he granted me, the link to it is in the video description.

im taking daito ryu at this moment. I have a couple issues with the art. While it does have combat aplication its not for many people. Its a way of life completly you have to dedicate many hours to it to truly understand how to use it for combat. Many techniques involve interpreting the attack before it gets to you which I think is wrong but I suppose it helps muscle memory? Personally I rather take krava maga or mma courses but I highly suggest cross training with this art..

@SenNoSenProject The interesting and beautiful thing about language and perhaps martial arts is that different languages contain words and concepts that are not reflected in other languages but are unique. Latin is a root language still used in science, whilst it is not really necessary to study it to be fluent ("mastery" is relative not absolute) in French, even a cursory understanding of it can offer insights and perspective into other languages and their paradigms. Great vid!!

Very enjoyable. Thank you for posting and for the Translation to English (!) :-) There were some delightful nuances and subtleties demonstrated by the Sensei. David Lowry had a very interesting take on the terminology. When asked about karatedo as martial art, he replied it isn't one. It was never used in martial ways (on battlegrounds). I guess by that logic, one could argue that aikido is not a martial art, since its application is explicitly not for "battle".

daito ryu is pre-war martial art. it's meant for killing. aikido is post war. which means ueshiba made it really gentle againts an opponent. ueshiba trained for many years daito ryu before he made his gentle version aikido.

@reuelckj i think you should choose one. in aikido there is a whole philosophy coming from ueshiba's view of the world. find out about this and if it appeals to you go learn aikido.

I like this video so please dont hate. The Pa Kua style of fighting is similar to Aikido. Going against opponent in circular motion and or displacing opponents energy away from your centerline. Please explain why the Shuto, ridgehand, strike from a sky to ground motion to the top of the forehead would actually hurt you instead of the opponent. It is effective in striking at a Shotokan Karate rising arm block however. But by itself, I think not.

I know I'm replying to a question from 6 months ago, but the answer seemed so obvious. Nobody strikes like that unless they're holding something. In feudal Japan that "something" was usually a sword, which was used to dispatch an enemy after he was immobilized. Or in the case of a defender, the sword arm can be blocked by intercepting it usually at the wrist.

Thats o.k. i appreciate your input. I know there is a strike in Karate that involves the wrist. Your hand is in a form similar to that of a Crane Style Kung Fu form, yet the striking part you do is with the wrist, it didn't make sense to me until I thought of the strike would be useful if holding a weapon, yet the Aikido strike is practiced in a Shuto chop type form against a hard area so it didnt seem practical because of the hand form and its very hard target. A hammerfist form would make more sense because the area of the hand would be spread out unlike the Shuto chop, thus less damaging to the hand. But your reply is good too, maybe a different hand form would take away from the Aikido style. I know some forms also are only used in practice and are change/modified in actual combat. I also thought it could have to do with the opponents helmet or headgear at that time period. Maybe a strike that stuns and also pulls down a helmet in front of the eyes as a disctraction. In Kyusho, which is pressure point fighting there are points along the forehead just above the eyebrows, it would seem more practical to strike there, but after reading some of these comments about skull and soft spots, this strike seems more practical than I thought. Again, thanks for your imput, it does make sense thinking about it that way.

He visto los comentario y en gran medida, se esta olvidando algo muy esencial, una de los grandes representantes y practicantes del daito ryu aikijujutsu, fue el Soke Sokaku Takeda, artista marcial nato de japon, uno de los ultimos samurais que fallecio en 1950, mientras estuvo vivo fue uno de los grandes sokes del clan takeda, el clan Takeda fue un clan samurai, el Soke tuvo que utilizar sus tecnicas muchas veces para combatir y estas tecnicas estan hasta nuestro dias...

Nice to show the Daitory in this way and i can see the root of the orginal Hapkido ortodox on it the same princeples it is only pressented in diffrent way and have been lucky to take part in two semminar with Ume sensi when he was in Sweden.And my jurney stared with modern Hapkido 1980 but i was always in the feeling that some thing was missing and when i first travel to Korea 1992 and practices orinal Hapkido i was to young to understand it. But now i started to do 7 travling later

Nowadays many doesn't know the basics in Aikido. Because of that there are many egoistic aikido "masters". Some say that basics are just for beginners, but that is very wrong. The basic is to know basics and then we can understand and develope.

03:06 that's Aikikai from Ueshiba Kisshomaru because of in that time martial arts were prohibited as a result of wars. Aikido from Ueshiba Morihei in Iwama is the pure marcial art, but both are effective. There are differents ways to practice Aikido, Kihon, A waze "or" Ki No Nagare and Go Tai. If you are persevering at training "There are no interrogations", you have to speak with your teacher always keeping respect and resolve together that interrogations. Study by yourself going to seminars.

@reuelckj Yes Wing Chun is really good in close quarter, I sort of learnt this the "hard" way. LOL. after I catch an elbow with my face. I have thought of Krav maga. but a lot of the material in Krav Maga (eye gouge, throat strike, multiple opponent,etc) have really been covered in Karate. Actually now I have a question, what is exactly "internal" art. I heard this a lot, but i never seem to get any satisfactory explanation. Thnks.

@reuelckj That's alright. Good on you that you have decided on one of them. You mentioned that you want to learn MA as real life, wise choice to learn Aikido since it is NEVER a sport. In regards to Budo or Bujutsu. Bujutsu refers to approach of learning/teaching MA as it's "raw" form, NOT sport NOT feel good stuff. More do or die. eg; Kenjutsu, Okinawan Karate (full contact, no protection at all), usually the dojo ask you to sign waiver form in case you are badly injured. cont....

yeah I hear you thats my problem with this art which is why I suggest cross training with it. Ive dont karate,bjj, kickboxing and mma I did beat a drunk guy at a bar with an aikijujitsu technique.. though but he lined himself perfectly for it so I cant say whether or not its completly effective. I think they train this way so youll understand the technique completly which is hard and put it in the situation you see fit.

So all of these moves are intercepting strikes from a person using a sword, very particular attacks. So how do we bring the techniques up to modern day attacking styles? Is that what krav maga essentially does?

That's not true. You learn to deal with various kinds of attacks - not just with a sword - and, most importantly, attacks coming from different directions. Attacks with a baton, punches, chokes, grabs... it's all there.

Budo is supposed to be the "higher" art of Japanes martial art. meaning that after you get tired of Bujutsu which concentrate on techique that ACTUALLY works, you prefer to settle down and "reflect" how on earth the Bujutsu have affected you as a human being. This is fine as long as this is for real. However, a LOT of dojo that claims to teach "Budo" eg: Kendo, Karate-do, etc. actually are teaching competition sport with getting trophies as primary goal. So be careful. OSU

Makes a bit more sense here, but please read through your replies, they are very hard to understand. However, aiki-jujutsu isn't "taught to kill in less than 10 seconds", so not sure what you're talking about. You should also have a look at the Senshusei program if you think Aikido is merely spiritual. Have a look at the documentary "Aikido, the Samurai Spirit" too, for a look at how an MMA fighter investigates Aikido (primarily Shodokan Aikido and Yoshinkan, as far as I could tell).

You have strayed very very far from my original reply, which was me disagreeing with you when you stated that Aikido "is about preserving techniques". Wait, so Hirokazu Kobayashi also studied Daito-Ryu? Or an Aikido that was close to Daito-Ryu? And is the Kobayashi Sensei in this video related to him? (Kobayashi seems to be a very common name in Japan...) I learned Aikido from a student of Hirokazu Kobayashi, so this interests me greatly. It does seem that what I have been taught is more direct and feels more comfortable with training atemi.

@reuelckj Nope. What I was saying is be careful of choosing the school. Some schools simply care about the trophies, NOT about expanding your ability as a fighter. As for me, I am practising Karate, and Muay Thai. Karate is about general skill. This is the one martial art that you can call the "Jack of all trade, master of none". Although to me Karate is master of one, this one is called versatility. Karate include punch, elbow, kick, knee, throws, tackle, submission, defence, evade. Yup..

I can't see any influence of Daito Ryu in Kyokushin. Not even in bunkai. Either Oyama completely forgot the techniques or purposely abandoned them.

In Daito-Ryu, the goal is self defense whereas Aikido is much more spiritual. This leads to the Daito-Ryu techniques being more direct and less circular, also making them applicable within a smaller area.

I dont like the Shuto strike to the forehead. Its the softest part going to a hard part that makes no sense. Its best used in Kyusho.

The shuto strike is affective on the neck bone or on the shoulders i practiced kyokushin Kai and i realized the prefect placing of the shuto the side shuto on the jaw is more affective then the punch.

+Leverquin Aiki-Jujitsu is the oldest known samurai hand-to-hand combat system (also used for disarming and incapacitating). Aikido is a martial art which only comprises of the aiki elements of the former, added to the relegious beliefs of the founder, Morihei Ueshiba. Aikikai is the name of the school that teaches aikido. School not as in dojo, but as in method. Just as there is Yoshinkan Aikido, or for example schools of karate like Kyokushinkai. Hope this helps

in aikijutsu, daito ryu, or aikido, the aim is not to fight. the aim is to prevent yourself from getting involved in fights. but when you are in a self- defense situation, you are supposed to execute the technique then run for your life. So that is the whole point of these arts not to fight, but to find peace within, and if you are in a situation where a person is hostile, use then run.

Not really. If someone attacks a highly skilled Aikido or Daito Ryu practitioner, the chances of there being a mat or something soft to land on is slim to none, when they are thrown. Something will break (a ligament, ribs, bone).

@reuelckj Learn both. I personally learn Karate, both as bujutsu and budo. Daito-Ryu Aikijutsu/Aikujujutsu is more bujutsu perspective and Aikido is more Budo perspective. However, i find that any dojo that claim to teach "Budo" nowadays are not budo at all, instead a lot of them are martial sport which is NOT effective. more dojo that teach bujutsu actually teach bukutsu AND budo.

Man, you are totally disagreeing with all the master says on the video. He said that there were no disagreement between the teaching from both arts. If a sensei keeps secrets (like the guy says on the beginning of the video), then the technique is not complete. But if you have a good sensei in Aikido, you may learn similar things to the Daito Ryu students. The techniques from this master are very fluid. A fluid technique is not a weak technique, it does cause pain, but still the energy flows.

I'm sorry, I've read your replies a few times now, but I can't make sense of your sentence structure at all, nor get your points. First you say Yoshinkan Aikido is inferior to Aiki-jujutsu, then you say the police train Yoshinkan Aikido because it's better than Aiki-jujutsu. I don't follow the logic whatsoever. I do however agree that Aikido lacks some things found in Aiki-jujutsu, however the same goes the other way around too (Aiki-J still practice against sitting sword attacks for instance).

You cant interpret an attack within milliseconds as a fights always changing. If he punches you 9/10 you wont be able to pull off any of these moves unless he is untrained. A fight isnt punch interpret punch interpret. Its punch punch punch grab punch kick punch!!! Tackle this sob! Stomp him!! Punch Punch Punch!! Elbow! Elbow! Clinch!! Knee Knee! Punch! Its way safer to grab clinch and try this stuff or use as a suprise than prolong the fight just using this..

takeda sensei was illiterate man, he didn't know how to make a signature for him self, that is why there is no philosophy in Daito Ryu, but he was THE master when we talk about martial art, what O Sensei did was infuse teachings that he recieved from Takeda (from hanmi to katame wasa) and gave them spiritual meaning. Ueshiba is master on his own, but in sheer technical aspect, i believe he didn't even reach takeda sensei, let alone surpass him (sorry for bad english)

Sorry to disagree with your presentation. But what you are saying is entirely incorrect. Aikijujitsu is fist and foremost a combative warfare martial art. If you are not teaching combat effectiveness then it is not Aikijujitsu.

On what piece of historical evidence are you basing this statement? Also, out of interest, could you also please state your precise lineage, starting from Takeda Sokaku? By itself, the term "Aikijujitsu" is meaningless so you would need to be a little more precise for me to respond on the argument itself.
