My wife bought me a light spinning rig for my birthday in 1983 which has this reel 31 years old now. I just found your service video thank you so much. This reel has never been cleaned and has been in the garage 20 years I need to take it apart and give it some love. One of the best reels I own.

I recently returned from a trip to the Salmon River ,NY with my buddies. One of them has 2 of these reels which he’s still fishing. I asked if he serviced them after the trip, he said to my astonishment he’s never serviced them in the almost thirty years he’s owned them never even oiled them ! He’s caught over 100 Steelheads with them . That is a testament to the quality of them . I took them back to Cape Cod with me and offered a free tune-up . WOW no wonder they are still bringing $90-$100 on eBay! Keep up doing what you’re doing , I don’t need to take pictures when I’m working on reels we have your excellent videos and tutorial! Thank You Rocky.

Some folks don't service the reels. I think they would be surprised if they did on how th performance would pick up.

Thank You!!! Great tutorial!! I’ve had one of these reels for over 30 years and was ready to scrap it because it was sluggish and rough. All it needed was cleaning and a good lube job. With your video I was able to do just that! It’s like brand new now!!

I can remember when it came out. The frame was the first composite construction offering light weight and with the Whiskers® in the mix giving it great strength. As the other commenter said products that are too good are discontinued. Like the Bic Metal single blade disposable razor. It had almost a bale wire leading the blade stretching the Whiskers and never clogged up while lasting at least a month. Anyways what a great reel.

some times products have been discontinued because the product was so good, it never needed to be replaced. there is a light bulb made by a defunct business that has been burning 24/7 since 1901. Many reels are no longer made due to the price of materials being to high to compete with products from China. the old ones still work after many years, the new ones , for the most part, will never have those bragging rights

I have two 1300s manufactured in Japan that I have fished with for many years with basically no maintenance and have very smooth operation. However, I recently purchased a 1300 from EB that was manufactured in Thailand and the operation is noticeably stiffer than older Japan reels. I will have to do a deep dive service of the reel and see if I notice any improvement. Your video will be a great reference for such a task. Thanks.

I think you will find dirt and old grease in the one that is performing poorly. The designs and parts are essentially the same. Probably poor maintenance - Good luck

Many experts agree that the Abu Garcia Suveran is the finest spinning reel ever made. That said this Daiwa may be one of the best Daiwa reels made in the 1980s. I personally think the Daiwa 8600 and 8700 reels are certainly among the finest reels made by Daiwa in an earlier decade. They were the first reels made with worm gear drives and 3 ball bearings. I truly wish I had one of the saltwater size models of this SS reel but they are a little hard to find and do not come cheap. I have a Daiwa Emblem X 5500T Pit reel that I use for surf fishing that has almost the identical mechanism to this reel. It is a long cast reel with spring loaded line retainers on both rotor arms. I like that Daiwa a lot. Great video as always Dennis

These reels are truly some of the best Daiwa has ever made. I have the 1300 and the 1600. Both reels are tough to kill. Unfortunately, Daiwa doesn’t see the numbers anymore with these models. It’s just like the BG, the older models will last longer than the current models, but most fisherman today want the more modern, more balanced feel of the new models with the IAR bearing. Nice video!

Dennis, I saw that spacer appear on your board right after you pulled the handle out and it disappeared after you wiped out the rotor. I thought it had fallen off the handle’s crankshaft. I was so happy to see it accounted for before the video ended. As usually, nicely done. Congratulations on your 20k subscribers.

29:13 I think they use those wide slot screws so if you're out in the field and suddenly want to switch the handle around on the reel, chances are you have a dime in your pocket that will fit that screw... well back then when people carried a bunch of change in their pocket...

Great video I have a 1300 and when I turn the handle the spool does not go up and down, any idea what part is required to fix the issue? Thanks
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle Год назад
Yes - the spool is moved up and down by the worm gear and pawl system. You probably have a broken or worn pawl, but it could also be the worm gear drive that is missing a tooth to teeth. You need to inspect both before determining which part or parts are needed. The real issue may be parts availability. Check with Southwesternparts.com for availability once you determine what is needed. Thanks for asking Dennis

Hello, Is the spool line holder suppose to have some play back and forth. I’d noticed mine feels loose and makes a bit of noise when I wiggle it with my hand. Thanks.
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle Год назад
There will be some play due to the oscillation system. It is hard to say what excessive is. If you have not serviced the reel, the noise may be from lack of grease or oil - Dennis

Hi Dennis, I dont understand how worm gear works. Is there a removable pawl like on abu reels?
@anthonycolbourne4206
@anthonycolbourne4206 Год назад
It looks like the "pawl" that runs up and down the worm gear is all in the "block" that is held to the shaft by the disappearing screw. It's different/complex extra parts to provide the in and out motion of the shaft compared to other reels... but other than the screw, it's difficult to tell what really holds all of those parts together/in-line when they are in use/motion.
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle Год назад
Yes, there is a pawl. That worm gear operated the same way as those on bait casters only it moves up and down instead of side to side and it carries the axle shaft with it instead of a line guide. Thanks for asking - Dennis
@anthonycolbourne4206
@anthonycolbourne4206 Год назад
@@2ndChanceTackle The more I look at that worm gear set-up, it's easy to see how much of a pain that would be to get back together if it ever needed to be taken apart.

Can the reel handle knob be replaced on these reels??
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle Год назад
Most reel handle knobs can be drilled out and replaced with an aftermarket knob. The manufacturer does not provide a replacement knob for the handle. You would need to order the complete handle assembly if available - Dennis

Dennis, Like the others watched this video very closely. I have two of these Diawa Whisker SS Tournment 1300. Bought new in the 1980’s. OK on one of the reels I have lost my drag…literally. Out of the clear blue went fishing last week and as tight as i turn the drag it does not exist. I took the reel apart and followed your video through out. Reel looks great on inside. But something obviously is not working and I cant figure out what to look for that is wrong. Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. PS did take apart the drape on the spool.
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle Месяц назад
Is the spool turning or is it the axle? Remove the spool and turn the axle. If that is turning, it would not be the drag. It would be a broken part inside the case.
@stevechubb4431
@stevechubb4431 Месяц назад
@@2ndChanceTackle. It is the spool. No friction at all even if tightened down
@stevechubb4431
@stevechubb4431 Месяц назад
To be more accurate the spool on top and bottom don’t turn. The part of the spool between top and bottom holding the line does turn. Hopefully that makes sense. I would look at my other reel but it is in Florida. Also forgetting my manners. Thank you for all!!
