How To Easily Install Shim Gears on Spinning Reels!
A lot of anglers aren't aware of uneven line height on spinning reels. Once discovered most don't know what to do. This is an issue that i never had to fix as i never suffer from uneven line lay. But recently a viewer to my channel was having issues of this on his spinners. I tried my best to explain what to do & realized i've never had to address this issue on my channel. Verbally. And it's hard to explain in words how to properly correct this issue.
So i decided to do a video explaining what causes this & how to easily work through it. Since i don't have any uneven reel spools around i had to improvise with a drawing. But i did open a new recent reel to point out exactly what to do in high resolution that seems to be lacking on addressing this issue currently on RU-vid. I hope this'll help those new anglers out that are either just getting into fishing or have recently suffered similar line lay problems.
The anglers who suffer the most on this are the newbies who purchase used spinning reels without the original boxes that have the instructions & extra shims in them. Most tackle shops should have some generic shims. Or try eBay as Amazon seems to have only Penns. I hope this will help out the new anglers getting into our sport.
Common Situations & Solutions-
1) If the spool has more line at the top of the spool (it will bulge) than the bottom add washers (shims) to the main shaft to correct the height. Adding shims increases the height & will help even off the top. Most times 1 will help even off the top bulge but sometimes you may have to use 2 shims.
2) If the whole spool has an uneven line lay (resembles a rippling effect) then you must re-spool the whole stack out with new shims. Most likely means the original shims are just worn flat out.
3) Line is bunching-up on the bottom? The simple solution is to remove all or some of the shim(s) on the bottom of the main spool shaft. This'll help even off the top line lay when you re-spool as this'll lower the height of the line lay (as pictured in the video).
If you need spinning reel shims first look in the box. Carefully. As you noticed in the video it was in a see-though plastic bag stapled to the instruction sheet. I've seen them "loose" sometimes under the box flaps on cheaper models. Your other option is contacting your local tackle shop to see if they have generic shims. Last option is to contact the manufacturer (Shimano, Daiwa, Okuma, etc) to place an order. I hope this will help those that are suffering due to this issue.
