I have always held Boris in high regard. He exceeded my expectations at Watkins Glen in 2011. I went to the race and ended up on pit road. All the drivers were leaving in Suburbans with tinted windows or were whisked away in golf carts. Boris was the only driver to WALK off pit road during practice and literally stopped for every fan. He signed every piece of apparel. Shook hands with every fan. He talked with me for a couple of minutes. I understand the job that these drivers have to do, but he took the time. He is such a great person. To hear his take on this crash is everything I respect about him. You can't make up that care and compassion. They truly broke the mold.

I grew up in Daytona and have been around racing since 1959. Scariest thing I’ve seen (on TV) was Jr’s corvette fire! Felt like it took forever before he got out of the car! @justingrabowski8142
@justingrabowski8142 9 месяцев назад
@@matthewsimon9500I disagree; I saw the wreck that took Weldon live and there was so much carnage you didn’t really know at first anyone was hurt. Even the first few replays, you couldn’t tell he hit that catch fence cockpit first. The Corvette fire, knowing Jr. was still in there and how intense it was and he’s still not out, that one angle that shows the fire flare up into his face and you can see he’s still got his shoulder straps on, was terrifying to watch. Even 19 years later and seeing it now gives me knots in my gut. Im just talking optics here; obviously a man lost his life in your example and nothing can compare to that.

Of all of them that plane crash should have takin the whole family. It's a miracle that the fence did not bind the door up, thankfully it didn't. The more I watched the scarier it is. Not a religious fella myself but something was keeping an eye on the family and pilots cause another foot or two and that plane would've not been able to be opened. Actually what most fans don’t know. Kyle is actually one of the nicest drivers I have ever met. Don’t let the tv persona fool you. I honestly think he is like drivers I drove with where they get in front of cameras and they act out because they are shy Or not confident. But I’ve met Kyle and he’s one of the best. The drivers people think are good ive also met and they are usually the worst ones. I met dale sr several times at race tracks 9 out of 10 times he was great but ever now and then you would get the persona dale. I would have to say one of the biggest pricks was mike skinner dale Sri team mate at rcr in the Lowe’s car. He walked around like he was god and had not won a race. Which is probably why dale sr absolutely could not stand him. He acted like he was superior to dale when I saw him. It would make you cringe the way he looked down to Gordon and dale idk if he intended to come off that way but that’s the way he appeared.

Junior, I don’t know if you fully appreciate how bad of a day this was for some of your fans. I’m 30, so at the time I was like 13. My family were diehard Earnhardt fans, my first outfit as a child was a Goodwrench outfit. They broke into CNN and all the national news that day saying you’d wrecked. I remember my family frantically calling each other. It felt just like that day in 2001. It was hours before they said you’d be okay. Coincidentally, I live near Blountville TN and had the exact same feeling when your plane crashed. You mean a lot to a whole generation of people.

I caught on fire in an accident at a golf course I worked at, that could have been totally avoided...and I can absolutely relate to both you and Boris...Our Maintenance guy said he dumped some diesel fuel on a burn pile and needed someone to go and set it on fire. I was confused...why didn't he set it on fire? In the end, I became even more confused that he didn't tell me that he dumped five gallons of diesel fuel in one specific area, the area I was in when I lit a piece of paper...while he was watching...I went up in a ball of flames from a simple bic lighter ignition while he was saying "Oh my God, I'm so sorry, OH MY GOD!!!...I was standing on dirt and sand and gravel and all of it got into my burning hands and face while I tried to stop, drop, and roll to get rid of the fire on my body...over the course of the next couple of days my head ballooned to double the size...I had three nurses who took care of me; one was horrifying as she cut my excess skin off my hands without any anesthesia...one was hopped up on drugs and unreliable, and the other was a saint who calmed my heart and took care of my head/face and re-did the wrapping on my hands that the previous nurses botched...
@SUPRAMIKE18
@SUPRAMIKE18 Год назад
I can tell you that definitely wasn't diesel the guy had poured on the pile, you can't ignite diesel with an open flame. Either he straight up lies or didn't know what he was talking about but from how you described it going up that sounds like gasoline.

The cutting of the skin is called debridement. I also know from first hand experience. Because i had it done. Was in an explosion at work, while simply opening up a building door. The whole building exploded, burning 42 acres of land. The building housed a natural gas dehydration unit, which boils the moisture out of natural gas. I was thrown 30 ft through the air like a rag doll, and I’m not a little guy 6-1, 220 then. Hit the ground with so much force while trying to break my fall with my hands, because I was going face first. That it instantly ripped the burnt hide off my hands and for arms. I was air lifted out after driving myself a mile out and waiting to be hauled to nearest ER 30 mins away, by company vehicle. Once upon arriving they immediately cut my clothes off, by this time it had been an hour and yes the burning sensation had set in. I was shaking like a leaf, but felt like someone was holding a blow torch to me all over. 3 doses of morphine did nothing, and the swelling had started. My face and hands were already swelling, they were worried I’d taken a deep breath when the explosion happened and immediately they airlifted me to the nearest burn unit. While on the chopper the flight medics gave me fentanyl and it eased the pain but didn’t kill it. Made it more of a sensation, upon arriving at the center, I was immediately met by roughly 30 doctors n nurses. N believe me they went to work. I was so burnt on my upper body they did all my blood pressures, IVs, blood draws, everything all from my feet. The plastic surgeon doctor told me with burns we don’t know how bad it is yet, but give it a week. Burns either get better or worse. They concluded I had 3rd degree burns on 26% of my body. 2nd degree on 15% and 1st on 16%. Lacerations to most of my fingers where chucks of the metal siding ripped through my hands as I was flying through the air, that were blown off the building. If that door hadn’t been 1-1/2-2in solid hardwood door and acted somewhat like a shield, I wouldnt. Be here today. Wrapped me up in bandages, sent me home that night, but it took 9 months of healing, 8 months of therapy and 2 years wearing burn sleeves over my arms, to get back close to normal. I still have scars when I tan. Or if I’m In the sun. Lucky I didn’t have any skin grafts. But the cutting the skin off (debreidment) sucks, wasn’t to bad while they were doing it, because all my skin had done lifted up separately from The layer under it. But when they wrapped me up air tight after, I could feel my heart beat every time in every bit of the newly uncovered raw skin n it had me almost in tears, begging for mercy. That was the 2nd week, or so. N the plastic surgeon said Yelp it got worse, you got burnt real good. The worst of it was the swelling, scabbing, peeling, scabbing again, peeling, scabbing again, of my face, lips, ears,

Eventually starting my own shop (that I’m still at) here at Sonoma Raceway. I was down in the garage area in the morning saw and said hello to Boris and Danny Binks (never met Jr) but when the wreck happened I was back at home and saw it on TV later that day and could not believe what I saw and how fast and big that fire was! The Vette guys ended up completely changing the entire fuel system in all of there cars because of that wreck. The refueling hose that’s probably 4” in diameter came off at the fuel cell when the car hit and all that fuel hit probably the exhaust and lit off!

Its lost in this clip, but has oft been said. That day, Sr. reached down from above, snatched his boy by the scruff of his neck, and dragged him out of the car..............Later in years, Jr. recollected the moment, and said, "He was right there with me the whole time......."

I had 3rd degree burns up my back and right leg from a welding accident and I can attest to the fact that fire is the worst. What was only a couple minutes felt like a lifetime. That burnt right into my muscle tissue and just wouldn't heal. Almost 20 yrs later and I still have no feeling on the back of my leg

Crazy, I have a similar burn story. 3 years ago I was boiling a pot of water to make tea. I forgot about it and heard sizzling so I ran to the kitchen and it was bubbling over, the handle was plastic. The heat had weakened it and as soon as I picked it up handle snapped and the water went over both my thighs. It was bad y’all, literally pain like I cannot describe. Nothing helped, they gave me 2 shots of morphine in the ambulance and a shot of fentanyl at the hospital and it didn’t touch it until about 90 minutes. It didn’t real numb the pain but it just so much medicine I was barely awake. But every few minutes I’d have like an adrenaline rush and be up then I’d be right back to zombied out then it would happen again. That happened about 10 times until I was finally knocked out. And they had put like sterile water and something else to help but man that was the worst experience of my life. No skin on either on my legs from the hip to the knee and then the burns were just spattered on both legs below the knee. Worse on the right side. So I had really bad burn on my thighs too. I can really sympathize with Dale. Oh, and I burned my hand even worse when I was 13 cooking frozen iced fries, I dumped them in boiling oil thinking you boiled oil like water it caught fire and that wasn’t the bad part the bad part was when I put the fiery pot in the sink and cut on the water.. It exploded But luckily it was just my right hand and I little on my face and neck. It could have offed me it was a big explosion my entire kitchen was pitch black lol. I’ve felt some burn pain and it’s some of the worst. That and dental pain.

When I saw that fire on the speed channel that day, I was concerned that it was gonna be serious burn injuries but came out ok with burn spots. Then race the next week after that. One tough customer.

I remember that day. We was on family vacation at the time. We had went to Daytona so we could go to Daytona USA to see your 500 winning car. The day of I remember we had just got back in the hotel from the beach to cool off, and shower to go eat. We always turned on ESPN to check into what’s going on in sports and there it was Dale Earnhardt Jr in Firey crash in Sonoma. Airlifted to hospital. We didn’t know what was going on and a bit confused cause like you said you didn’t go off the NASCAR grid so much. And with it being so close it seemed even though 3 years , (your father,My Hero) we or I did at least thought we may have lost another racing icon. This was an awesome podcast and I appreciate all the details you and Boris told.

A fun discussion about a terrible topic. I was at Sebring when Jr and Dad showed up for their very first Corvette experience...we were cleaning up from teaching a driving school when the Goodwrench trucks rolled in. Boris I've met several times while he was racing with Turner in the BMWs. Always a gentleman.

I’ve gotten burned before and I know that feeling you had. The burning gets more and more intense to the point where it’s past your tolerance. I had to have morphine as well. The crazy part is after I woke up from being doped up I didn’t have anymore pain. That was the most intense pain I’ve ever experienced in my life and I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.

Either your nerve endings were dead or the morphine was a big shot. I burnt my arm (wrist to elbow) something fierce years ago and I hope never to feel that again. I can't imagine being engulfed. Cheers
@Jpilgrim30
@Jpilgrim30 2 года назад
@@buckodonnghaile4309 it was a big shot and I was on pain meds for a couple of weeks after. It was both of my arms and chest. The burning was getting worse and by the time I was at the hospital I ran into the triage room to the sink and was splashing water on it constantly. They got me back instantly and knocked me out with morphine. I remember halfway coming to with my arms wrapped and nurses giggling because they were trying to get some info and I was so doped up i was talking nonsense 😂.

@@Jpilgrim30 haha, glad you're doing better. When I broke my pelvis the nurses had the same issue, I kept telling them that my leg was on backwards and asking if the the doctor was trolling me......fun stuff, cheers.
