Dale Earnhardt Jr. and co-host Mike Davis kicked off this week's The Dale Jr. Download taking a fresh new swing at the "Open Segment" of the show. The crew discussed Joey Logano's controversial last-lap contact with William Byron for the win at Darlington Raceway. Is Joey doing it right? How should Byron handle it moving forward? I've seen SO MANY Tweets about how "how can people criticize this when they'd have praised Dale Earnhardt for it." People seem to forget that Sr. was booed LOUDLY at Bristol after he pulled a very similar move on Terry Labonte for the win. I don't know if it's just young people who weren't around for the Dale era or if they've just forgotten, but he was far from universally loved.

I strongly believe Dale is now loved because of his accident. If he was around (which I wish was true) he would be much more polarizing figure than now. There would be some hardcore fans, of course, but also huge group of haters. He wasn't a fan favorite by any means back then

A lot of it has to do with what many people have pointed out -- Joey doesn't own it. Dale was The Intimidator. He owned that aggressive driver moniker. Joey doesn't. If Joey owns it like Dale Jr said, yeah people will still boo him for it, but I don't think there would be as much vitriol behind it

If the roles were reversed, the people actually involved in the sport would have the exact same opinions, assuming Byron shrugged blame off and owned nothing just like Logano did in his interview. What the hell does Dale Jr Mean that Joey should own what he did by the Hit and Run to Win the Race? Joey in his Interview just after he got out of his Car following the Race, Stated that he did Own It!!! He clearly stated that because he was forced into the Fence off once the race started, that it was retaliation and that he owed Byron one! So he didn't qualify it as Byron intended to take him out, but just that he was Squeezed that resulted in hitting the Wall. That is damn pretty clear and Byron may have even braked Into Lagano make the contact to appear a lot more aggressive. In the last lap Lagano was a second behind Bryon and it appears that he had realized that he was going to going to carry enough Speed in the final turn before the Checkered Flag. He knew he had no way to fend off Lagano who had been unable to gain on his Car,. But something changed! It appeared that he no longer could carry the same speed with his tires having lost their traction in the oncoming final turn before the Checkered Flag. Lagano suddenly had caught up to Bryon, not because he suddenly found some Unexpected Additional Horsepower all of a sudden, but it was that Byron was not driving with the same intensity due to having a loss of control from tires no longer to maintain the speed that had kept Lagano a second behind and unable to close the distance in the majority of that last restart! You can see Lagano was suddenly closed that distance in a very short amount of time and him could see Lagano intended to come up for and bump, and just before it was to happen Byron either braked or he took his foot off of the Accelerator to make that contact much bigger. He was prepared for it and it wasn't so hard that it turned Byron's Car as he ended up hitting along the entire side of his Car hitting the Wall. And let's face it, Bumping competitors is a well established activity in Nascar! But anyone saying that Byron was going to cross the Finish Line First if not for being Bumped by Lagano is clearly Delusional. Lagano had caught up Suddenly and Something had caused Byron to slow down and he knew why Lagano was going to go for a Bump & Run! Then Bryon made it bigger by slowing just before contact. Kid should admit what had happened to be over taken by Lagano in such a fast manner when just before that Lagano could not close the distance since the last & final restart!!!

@@dandarling912 For the record, I'm not a Joey fan, but this whole thing is a false narrative. People saying he "should have raced him for a few corners"--they we're coming to the white, it's not like he had 20 laps to race Byron. And you're exactly right, Joey did own it. I guess people just didn't expect him to so they don't believe it. This is a case of "you're not gonna race me that way" exactly like Joey said. If Joey got out of the car and said "oh I didn't mean to. He checked up" this would all be different. But this is just a veteran driver not taking crap from a kid, exactly like JR was alluding to. I don't understand why he thinks Joey didn't own it. For the record, I do think it was a bit cheap, and Joey punted him harder than I'd liked to have seen, but I don't blame him. Just like I won't blame Byron for wrecking Joey somewhere else. But just like Joey, Byron has to own it when he gets out of the car. I wanna hear "He's had that coming since Darlington." Yeah it does. But the code has always been that if you are gonna race someone that way then you need to be fine with being raced that way back. Joey has a history of not being ok with being raced hard, but thinks he can race them anyway he wants. If Joey comes out and mans up and says "Yes I wrecked him for the win" then is fine with getting raced the same way then fine, but to come out there and play as if he was the victim and that he is equal now and doesn't think he should be paid back....There is just no respect in that. Jr is absolutely right here, Byron needs to stand up for himself and punt Joey. If he doesn't the same thing that has happened to Elliott will happen to Byron. But you can’t call out Logano for something I literally heard Junior say at least three times last year you have to do and alls fair on the last lap I believe he has said repeatedly. This has nothing to do with a Hendrick driver. Now I will say Joey is getting more crap for it because it is Joey and he has a history of being a hypocrite in these type of situations. That said even if it wasn't him, no there is nothing wrong with what Joey did in my opinion, same with guys like Chastain or any driver who wrecks someone for a win. I've said that for years. There is no rule against it so there is nothing wrong with racing that way. However, I believe if you are going to race that way you better expect to be raced the same way in return. In this case I think Byron does need to return the favor like any driver, because if he doesn't he shows he will allow others to race him like that with out racing that way back, so guess what happens then. Joey did what he thought he needed to do to get the win. We talk about this as though it is out of the norm. Tight racing breeds this kind of racing. Thought it was just racing. Now Byron owes Joey one. I'm expecting that. Makes for a great race in the future. Just my opinion.

The only thing Logano needed to do to win was pass Byron which he could have easily done! Logano didn't even make an attempt to pass him! Just deliberately rammed him in the ass and knocked him out of the race. I mean he made contact with the 24 at Martinsville and it wasn’t just casual contact, but it didn’t cause the 24 to get loose and slide up the track. This type of driving has gone on forever. It’s not a new tactic and this incident has been whined about long enough. Dale Sr is the most remembered for aggressive driving but he was not the first or last driver to do it. Also, drivers rarely just come out and ‘own it”. I remember many after race interviews with SR where all we got was that sly smile of his and some words about tough racing. And I say that with all respect, he was the best at what he did and loved the aggressive driving style. That’s part of the history of NASCAR.

The part that's not being discussed is the timing of Byron putting Logano in the wall. The previous restart featured everyone aggressively pushing the guy in front of them. That led to Truex getting loose in the middle of a tight pack of cars, starting a wreck that included eight other drivers. You didn't see that aggressiveness from anyone on the last restart besides William Byron. I would love to hear if there was any gentlemen's agreement to keep the restart clean to avoid another huge wreck. That's what it looked like to me.

William Byron is a very good race driver. Like many, he needs some polishing. When Byron took over the #24, Hendrick put Chad Knaus in as his crew chief. Chad had his work cut out for him. I remember a race at Watkins Glen, ( I don't recall the year just now) William was getting roughed up on the track. Chad was becoming increasingly upset with William because he was just taking it. I even recall (not in verbatim), Chad told William during that race If he didn't retaliate and push back, that there were going to be ramifications within the team. I can only speculate what that would be, but it could end up with Chad stepping down as crew chief and possibly voting to not extend William's contract. William kind of fought back after Kansas, but it was verbal in the post race interview and I think he failed at that by the language he used, such as "idiot" and "moron". I hope in retrospect that even William agrees it could've been said much better and next time, let the front bumper do the talking.
