We leave Sedbergh to ascend the Howgill Fells, a part of the Lake District which as it location is situated east of the M6 motorway tends to get overlooked by most travellers and hikers. Therefore, it is no surprise that we have a journey that is quite in the extreme, with no other hikers spotted for the whole journey of us visiting these fells.
We stop at the trigger point of The Calf which is the highest point on the Howgills and then continue on the Ridgeline that mainly composes the Howgills. Eventually we descend this fells and mainly follow streams alongside fields before we finally arrive at Newbiggin-on-Lune.
The next day we start from Newbiggin-on-Lune knowing that the walk today will be mainly following two old Drovers Road. First we make our way across a remote footpath across Ravenstonedale Moor. Eventually, we view a signpost that confirms that the path for the Coast to Coast is near by. We now join the path that takes us through the Limestone ridges of the Orton Fells. We finally leave the fells in the background and cross field meadows to admire Rutter Force and Mill. The resulting water becomes the Hoff Beck which we now follow until we arrive at the pub in Hoff.
At Hoff we continue to follow the muddy path that hugs the Hoff Beck before we cross this on a footbridge. Now we are ascending fields to gain some steep ground which tops out with nice clear views of Appleby-in-Westmoreland. in particular we can see the castle and this we view also at the main gateway to the castle. Next we are heading into town to admire the very old buildings before crossing the river to arrive at the railway station which is the official end of the Dales High Way.
