They both were great in this very important film. When Ron sues to FDA in court over the peptide-T usage as being non toxic and the judge sides with him, as well as calls out the FDA for it's bullying tactics, it was a truly awesome moment even though the judge admits he cannot do anything. They even applaud Ron when he returns. He later succeeds and lived more than 7 years past the time he was originally given in his prognosis.
The interesting thing is, when Rayon, dressed in men's clothing, is speaking to her father, she still seems like a woman. In fact, the men's clothing seems awkward and incorrect. That's how well he played the role.
***** She means a transgender woman. Trans women are women stuck in men's bodies. Drag queens are just men in dresses, although some drag queens are trans. Rayon is a woman in a man's body - a trans woman.
Man when rayon and ron hug what a tear jerker, at that point its not about gay or straight its about being human/with a illness that does not discriminate.
i have NEVER EVER seen an actor speak with more love about a character he plays than Jared...his eyes sparkle when he talks about Rayon. That's an actor ladies and gentleman!!
best performance i've seen in a long time. The soft movements, the voice, the look.... I believed him in every second and totally forgot about "jared leto". It was the performance of a lifetime. And I think even as a woman he looked absolutely beautiful. (no surprise here!) :) I'm very proud of you, Jared.
Both Jared and Matthew were phenomenal in this film, but Jared's performance made me so emotional and I felt so much empathy for the character of Rayon. Both Oscars were well deserved.
When she was looking in the mirror and saying she wanted to be pretty, I just wanted to give her a hug :( Rayon is gorgeous - I mean she's played by Jared Leto, so how can she not be ?? ;)
this guy is pretty underrated. He is a very good actor and never really got the recognition that he deserves. I'm glad that he got the chance to shine in this movie.
I just watched this movie and Jared Leto absolutely blew me away. His character was loving, funny, and was the perfect match for Matthew McConaughey's character because they were total opposites. Half the time I forgot it was even Jared Leto playing the character. And I absolutely love how he defends his performance and character against people who think it's "wrong" and "immoral". This role not only proved how great of an actor Jared Leto is, but it also proved how much of a genuine and caring person he is. Go Jared Leto!
I couldn't have said it better myself. In one of the interviews he talks about how he would walk around supermarkets in character and all the dirty looks he got and how that really inspired him
This character touched and broke my heart immensely. Such a well deserved Oscar. I applaud Jared Leto for portraying the beautiful Rayon. Nobody could've done it better.
Griffin Kowash i take from your tone that you disapprove of the casting of jared leto for this role, because he is a straight man. Therefore, by your logic you are saying that trans actors shouldn't play the role of a straight man. I think thats unfair, don't you?
Rayon is one of the most heartwarming characters ever created in film. Her journey is so moving throughout the film, portrayed brilliantly by Jared. I loved watching the relationship develop between Ron and rayon. Just beautiful :)
I am a really big fan of Jared. I agree. I'm so glad someone else turned it down because he did good! That hug at 05:50 made me cry and the scene talking to his dad was heartbreaking.
You're so right...I literally could not take my eyes off of him. I've been trying to think of someone else who could have played this part...and I can't...he is that extraordinary!
EDITED TO FOR CLARIFICATION. HE refers to Jared Leto I was crying just by watching this clip. He really deserved to win, REGARDLESS OF HIS GENDER. I don't understand why people have to overly trivialize things like "oh he's portraying a transgender, no it should be a real one..." like I remember what a casting director said when people in China got flustered when Zhang Ziyi was cast as a geisha... "it's about potential, not nationality." Or better yet, let us all remember what Mo'Nique said... "it's about the performance, and not the politics."
To be honest, I think people nowadays are too sensitive that they victimuzed themselves without noticing. This is my favourite character, and what I remember is her affection towards friends and her courage to be herself. People really need to be more open-minded, instead of seeing what they want to see.
It's good to see an actor talk with real love, respect & affection for their character, and even better to see a transgender person portrayed that way on screen
I have seen every single movie he has been in, and he is with out a doubt one of the best character actors I have ever seen. He was phenomenal in Chapter 27 and Mr. Nobody, but this role puts all of his others to shame. I completely forgot that I was watching my idol on screen half way through the movie. I forgot that it was Jared, he made me (and I'm sure many others) believe that he was Rayon. Such a wonderful, once in a lifetime role for a phenomenal, once in a lifetime actor.
Rayon is the perfect example of someone who's lived through trauma, but still sees the light and is still a decent, kind and good person. She does not use her trauma as an excuse to abuse others or to get away with doing bad shit. What a character Jared brought to life.
This 6 minute clip brought me to tears. I can't imagine what I'll be like when I'm actually watching the entire movie. Such beautiful acting by Leto! This is definitely acting worthy of an Oscar!
Jared Leto was born to play this role and he becomes Rayon. Nobody could have played Rayon with the same method that Jared carries out and lets the audience see.
IMO, Jared Leto gave the most exceptional and unforgettable performance of 2013. Better than even Cate Blanchett in Blue Jasmine. Leto showed a very wide range of emotions: defiance, solidarity with Ron, regret, fear of death... Not to mention Leto's weight loss and effeminate behaviour throughout the movie. I am glad he won the Oscar. For me Supporting Actor was quite straightforward (unlike Leading Actor & Supporting Actress). Leto's closest competitor Michael Fassbender played an evil slave owner, and that's it. A very well deserved win for Leto. And what a lovely speech and tribute to him mom =)
I think this might be my favorite movie ever. The whole cast, especially Jared Leto, put their heart & soul into their performance, and it paid off big time. Such an important film with a powerful message. This movie changed my life.
The best scene in the movie is actually right after he meets his dad, and he's posing with the dress. They took that scene out of context in this video. In the movie, it really breaks your heart, because you get behind him 100% and see what he's dealing with. Leto will win the Oscar.
Great movie. All the actors were great. But Jared Leto absolutely stole the show in my opinion. His portrayal of Rayon was incredible. He definitely deserves that Oscar, no questions asked. The way portrayed the character was so powerful, I feel like the movie could have been just about Rayon, and his life. Amazing.
he was made for this role !!! he's defiantly and suppose to get this oscar ! first time i saw these clips i thought that it was a real girl ! when i saw leto in person i couldn't believe it ! he's a flawless actor !!

This movie could change the mind of the entire world.. for something better♥
I knew Matthew and Leto would win the Oscar right after I finished watching the movie ! Their acting was Awesome. They should make more movies like this. Salute the great transition they made. People who understand great movies/acting will understand why they won the oscars this year.
Jared Leto was beyond amazing in this film! I watched it and forgot it was even him, he really became Rayon. & Rayon really was the heart of this movie if that character wasn't in the film it would not be the same film at all. So happy that Jared got recognized for this role, it was very well deserved :)
Just watching this short video brought tears to my eyes. I am so happy seeing how a film can change lives and perspectives. Everyone did such a brilliant job in this movie. I watched it the night before the Academy Awards and still the power of it keeps me captivated.
When I watched this movie, I was like, "HOLY SHIT, LETO AND McCONAUGHEY BLEW ME AWAY!" I did not know that mcconaughey had that capability to be such an affective method actor, a few talented people have today, like christian bale, De Niro, daniel day-lewis and leo dicaprio, and those that are not with us like Brando, Bogart, Grant, and Heston. I hated McConaughey's image prior to Dallas Buyer's because of his douchiness and tendency to do romantic comedies (though he was great in Dazed and Confused). But after his performance in this movie, he showed the world that he can be world-class and it surprised the hell out of me. I knew that Leto always has had a great talent and was always underrated. His performance in Requiem for a Dream was also oscar-worthy. I think his good looks overshadowed his talents. I also love his music. It's about time he gets kudos!
Absolutely remarkable acting here! I completely forgot he was Jared Leto... he was just Rayon! It took a while after I watched the movie and thought to myself, Hey Wait a minute! That was Jordan Catalano! He took this role and turned it into something out of this world. I guess this is the magic of acting. In my opinion, Rayon stole the show! I wanted to know more about Rayon (granted he was a fictional character) but I wanted to watch a movie about Rayon! Awesome job, Jared! MIND OFFICIALLY BLOWN!
Congrats to Jared for winning the Oscar, when Rayon said "I Don't Want To Die" l totally lost it and burst into tears. Such a Fantastic Movie, again Congrats to Jared and Mathew.
“With the dramatic increase in the popularity of minstrel shows in the years following emancipation, Whites continued to wear the blackface mask in performances that would serve to define the meaning of blackness for many Americans who by choice or geography had little contact with Blacks.”
there was a time when I made fun of gay people, I hated them so much, I used to say....thanks AIDS + other things, after I saw this movie I realized I was wrong. I am sorry for everything I said, not one has the right to judge anyone, after all, not one is perfect. only our mighty God has the right to judge us. it was Jesus last words to his disciples, love one another as I loved you.
I'm glad you came around. Jesus wasn't rich, he wasn't a genius, he was a man and these were the people he surrounded himself with; people who needed him, and he loved them. He never considered himself any better or any different than anyone else. What we need is more people who are willing to live by that example.
it sucks that both Fassbender and Leto got nominated this year. I mean, it's awesome that they get recognition, but they both deserve to win an oscar for their performances and it sucks that only one of them can. Two of my favorite performances of all time.
his performance in this movie is absolutely astounding! i mean i knew he's a good actor, but i had no idea he's this brilliant! the oscar win is really well deserved.
The "father of American minstrelsy" was Thomas Dartmouth "Daddy" Rice (1808-60), who in 1828, in a New York City theatre, performed a song-and-dance routine in blackface and tattered clothes. Rice's character was based on a folk trickster persona named Jim Crow that was long popular among black slaves. Rice also adapted and popularized a traditional slave song called Jump Jim Crow.
you know what pisses me off? Like a lot? Is that there are many people that don't like/hate 30stm, and that's ok cuz it's their opnion, but most of them criticizes Jared's work as an actor just because they don't like the band. DUDE, what is the matter with you people?? He deserves ALL the award for this role! and he's a GREAT actor, in every single way! so haters, please, have some respect for this amazing actor. Thank you
This movie was heartbreaking, beautiful, inspiring. I wasn't sure how Leto would do because I've never really considered him an amazing actor..but it's like he was born for this role. I forgot that it was him 5 minutes in and was 100% convinced I was watching Rayon, a beautiful transgendered addict with HIV
Jared Leto’s role in Dallas buyers club was just amazing! I felt so touched with every single part played by him! This is the best Oscar supporting actor winning ever! Big love to Jared Leto and Dallas buyers club!
