Cliff Barnes aka Ken Kercheval and JR Ewing aka Larry Hagman were without doubt the best arch enemies on the PLANET...R.I.P to you both gentlemen. I am on Season 5 (again) of Dallas, and am relishing the anticipation of the first of many put downs that JR exercised on his enemy.. Dallas is/was and always will be the GREATEST TV SHOW EVER MADE. Nothing then/Now and in the future will ever TOP this once in a lifetime show. May I thank Mr David Jacobs for giving us this TV Gold.
We had a few good Drama’s back then. There was better programs back then, the writing, directors and actors. These shows had the quality of Oscar winning performances. Now, television programs and movies are just plain terrible.
So true. I mean, we can always stream the entire series anytime we want to, but it would be even sweeter if we could go back in time and do it all live all over again. Having to wait an entire week to see the next episode used to drive me crazy with anticipation. 😅
How do you know Ken made it to Heaven, just out of curiosity? Do you know for a fact that he was a Born Again Christian that accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and repented from his sins? Because that's the only way one makes it to Heaven and the road is very narrow. Don't get me wrong, I hope Ken made it but according to The Holy Bible, the odds that he did are extremely long. Same for all of us.
You are right. Ken is great. I am watching Dallas now for the first time in 30 years. And back then, I undervalued Ken and his acting ability. But now, I think that he was great. And back then I sided with JR, and I thought of Ken as a pest. Whereas today, I see so many negative qualities of JR in my own uncles, brother, and sister. Just watching this gives me negative flashbacks of my own manipulative, deceptive, and evil family members.

@@Stephaniewashere Jesus absolutely DID die for our sins. But did Ken accept Jesus as Lord? Did he lead an absolute perfect life after that? Because according to thousands of people with near-death experiences, there are very many people in Hell right now that thought they were saved, and loved Jesus, but still went to that absolutely unthinkable, and totally unjust place. NO human being that has ever lived, deserves an eternal punishment like hideous Hell. Not even Hitler. Not even Hillary Clinton.
LG I must say it was hard to have a favorite show back then. There were So many good shows to choose from. Dallas, The Waltons, Family, Rich Man Poor Man, The White Shadow and St. Elsewhere. They all had good writers, directors, story lines and of course the actors. It was an exceptional time for television. I still prefer these to what is on TV in this millennium. I hate reality shows.
It shows true life in business and personal life and the choices humans make. The good side and bad sides. Most were good characters with the exception of JR playing both sides. It gets a little out their near the last few seasons, but you are still drawn in to the characters and story lines. JR never learns like Miss. Ellie told him in early episodes.
Will never forget the scene when Cliff found his mom and bought candy that he remembered she liked from when he was a child before she left he and Pam!A great scene!
That's right ole Cliff Barnes didn't wanna believe the truth that his worthless daddy Digger Barnes was a drunk and a bum and a shit father to him and Pam leaving them to be raised by their Aunt Maggie. Jock tried to take care of Digger but Digger was butthurt jealous of Jock.
Well, I understand your point, but I would have to say that Cliff Barnes was his own second worse enemy. J. R. Ewing was definitely Cliff's worst enemy. J. R. hated him more than anyone else!
@@itsmylife842 : JR probably wouldn't have given Cliff much thought most times if Cliff didn't keep trying to nip at his heels. In fact, at one point I recall JR describing his feud with Cliff as an ' Mouse nipping at the legs of a Lion ' or something close to that... Cliff had many chances to move on with his life, but he let his obsession rule him, and destroy his relationships...etc. All this, only to find out later that Jock didn't actually cheat Digger out of anything. Hate and revenge is a waist of energy, and it gives the person you hate an indirect power over you because you are living your life consumed by that hate, rather than just living your life. Cliff was his own worst enemy.
What happened to Cliff was tragic, but unfortunately (like many other Dallas characters), he played right into JR's hands. Cliff was very much in the mold of his self-pitying father Digger.
It was not the Ewing's fault not even JR's. It was Cliff's own selfish greed. That's what Rebecca told Cliff when she fired him! The Barnes' including Pam, always played that pity party. Very frustrating.
The show Dallas was the beginning of some of the best times of television. It created a new catergory, evening soap operas. It was the times for great producers. Dallas had a cliff hanger, unforgettable moment in television. " Who Shot JR Ewing." It kept the audience on the end of its seat waiting for shoe to fall.
J.R. was absolutely right about Cliff, but Ellie was too blind to see it. Not one of them could effectively argue against J.R. on the issue of Cliff, who would have been fine if he'd only been able to leave J.R. and his family alone. From the early seasons on, J.R. didn't start anything. It was always Cliff swearing to avenge his "daddy", which was also based on greed.
your right Cliff only had to leave The Ewings alone. but also even if he did and Cliff did what he could to build up his own company if JR and Cliff were bidding on a deal hopeing ti win it.....JR would have done anything to make sure Cliff didn't win. JR doesn't play fair when comes to bussiness.
They should have kept Rebecca. They also should have kept Lucy & Mitch as a strong-healthy couple to balance the Ewings. Lucy be like Bobby. She had sense about people. As well as kept Ray & Donna as the other strong/healthy power couple. Donna could have been utilized more such as at Ewing oil to balance Bobby & JR. I wonder if they had to let characters go to get Elvis's ex wife? If so, it wasn't worth it. Katherine could have been normal not crazy. The Barnes needed to be unified like the Ewings to really make it an interesting fued. But they took Rebecca, Afton, Katherine & Pam characters away from Cliff...boring. They could have had Cliff keep pursuing Sue Ellen or be a good friend, especially when J.R. was seeing women behind her back after the 2nd marriage. It drove J.R. bonkers...Cliff did not mind being used by Sue Ellen.
Marquirs Williams : I do not think Rebecca was capable of being a thorn in JR's side for more than a minute. If they had kept Rebecca around, JR would have turned her into the a penniless drunk like Digger and Cliff. She wouldn't have stood much chance of fighting JR for long, let alone actually beating him for good. JR always was willing to be ruthless to win. He'd cross lines that someone like Rebecca would never cross to win. Rebecca was clueless to think money is all you needed to beat JR. It's not just about money. JR was JR because he was not only smart and cunning, but he was ruthless and willing to do whatever he had to do to win. That's one reason why he almost always won. He would have broken Rebecca, just like he broke so many other people who actually had the hard bark on them that Rebecca didn't. Rebecca was a dolphin, and JR was a Killer Whale.
@@PlanetBlake How come he was scared to death when he found Rebecca and Clayton together? He always attacked Cliff and/or Pam to get to Rebecca. He never would have gone face to face with Rebecca.
@@friedchickenicedtea : This is a man who drove Edgar Randolph to attempt suicide just in order to get out from under JR’s blackmail. Then instead of being remorseful, JR went to Edgar Randolph’s hospital room and told him that if he ever committed suicide he’d still expose Edgar’s secret out of spite and to prove he always follows through on his threats. If you want to believe JR would have coward to Rebecca, then that’s your right. Rebecca might of been able to get in a scratch or two initially, but JR would have broken her and turned her into a bankrupt drunk like Digger and Cliff. That fight would have been like a house cat going up against a Grizzly bear who doesn’t give a sh*t how he wins, he’s just going to win. Very few characters on the show were capable of standing up to JR for long, and pretty much no one scared JR. He feared Jock. He feared Bobby, but really only in a physical fight. Jeramy Windell was one of his toughest adversaries because Windell could be ruthless too. Rebecca didn’t have the skills, heart or ruthlessness to standup to JR for long. JR would do whatever it took to get his way, Rebecca wasn’t that person. Being an angry Mom for a few weeks doesn’t make her a match for the monster that JR was for decades.
I got so tired of Pam and Rebecca, and then Afton blaming everybody else for Cliff's actions. J.R. was a ruthless snake in the grass, but guess what, he was honest about it. Cliff stayed trying to keep up with J.R., and ALWAYS failed. What happened between Digger and Jock, was between them, but Cliff, like the idiot he was took up his dads fight. And any long time Dallas fan knows that Jock didn't do anything to Digger. Digger (like his son) was a drunk, a loser, and his own worst enemy. Cliff never took responsibility for his own actions, he always blamed J.R.. Noone told him to steal from his mothers company. Cliff could have been very successful, but he couldn't let go of his hatred for the Ewing's.
Correct. Digger’s worst enemy wasn’t Jock but alcohol, and like any alcoholic “it’s everyone’s fault but mine”. Cliff, not an alcoholic, stupidly made a personal vendetta created in his fathers head.
Ellie made too many excuses for JR. Cliff didn't care about anyone or anything but himself. Pam was naive and blind when it came to Cliff. Cliff tried too hard to be a mini JR. NOT!
I think the show had a serious problem with strong female characters until the final season. Pam was also strong , fiesty and independent in the first season then the writers made her into a weak ,needy neurotic female who could only be fulfilled by a relationship or a child. Same with Donna . Rebecca should have been kept as the patriarch of the Barnes she was more then a match for JR and Miss Elllie was a weak character , JR literally told her to go to hell and she took it Jock would have destroyed him.
I agree I wish they did not kill off Rebecca. Pam and Cliff and their Momma back. And if Cliff could have stop falling for J.R. traps. They could have built a powerful Wentworth/Barnes Empire.
@James Murphy : I agree that Rebecca was clueless. She thought money is all you needed to beat JR. Well, only someone clueless and ignorant of JR would think that. It's not just about money. JR was JR because he was not only smart and cunning, but he was ruthless and willing to do whatever he had to do to win. That's one reason why he almost always won. He would have broken Rebecca. Plus, if she wants to blame someone for what happened to Cliff, she should blame Cliff and herself. She gave Cliff money and power in spite of Pam warning her.. Plus Rebecca kicked Cliff while he was down by not giving him hope they could still be Mother and son after he embezzled the money.
Sal Paradise Katherine would never have helped Cliff. She didn’t like her mother giving parts of the Wentworth estate to Cliff and Pam. She felt that was all her birthright.
Sal Paradise: The problem was "backing Cliff"... Cliff he proved many times that he was an incompetent, who wasn't a match for JR. "Backing" him was a mistake. Rebecca was clueless and thought money was all you needed to beat JR. Takes a lot more than money to beat JR. Katherine's character should have been around longer. She was wicked and willing to get down in the mudd to win. If Katherine had all the Wentworth fortune, she at least had the ruthlessness and cunning to have been an interesting enemy and/or alley of JR for more years.
A man that did what he had to do to keep the family fortune coming in. JR Never got the credit he deserved and was always being shot down by his Family.
@@jackthomas6952 Miss Ellie should have married Digger Barnes. She was NEVER a faithful Ewing. Always a true rattlesnake, even against her own sons. Especially JR. Ellie was an absolute disgrace to the Ewing name. I'm glad JR always showed her the disrespect she earned.
@@keenakaur6314oh FFS! What would you have her do? Completely excuse and condone JR’s most vicious and hideous deeds? all in all, she was exceptionally loving and tolerant of all her children, Including JR… when she *occasionally* reprimanded JR, he more than deserved it…
Agreed, but deep down she always knew who JR was and chose to ignore it more often than not. She admitted that she gave up on JR when he was very young and let Jock control him. She knew who JR was as far back as when he was a teenager. They showed in the mid-80s Dallas Early Years miniseries when Miss Ellie was smirking at JR going off to the barn with one of his female conquests during the Ewing barbecue. Miss Ellie understood who and what JR was but at the end of the day always forgave him since he was her son.
@@new_yawker901 She was just another Barnes LOSER. Just like Pam. I wish we could've seen her burn in that car wreck. Would've been the absolute greatest moment in television history. BURN BABY BURN!!! And by all means, let us see Rebecca, go down in that plane and EXPLODE on impact!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!
I was wondering why his mother looked vaguely familiar. She was Ms. Chadwick on Mommy Dearest. Which makes sense because this was around that time. The RICHHHHHHHHHH Ewings
Rebecca was foolish. Blaming all the Ewing's family for JR's and her own son's failing and sins, was ridiculous. If JR / the Ewings were responsible for what happened to Cliff, then Rebecca was just as responsible for what happened to Cliff too. As I seem to recall, Pam even warned Rebecca not to give Cliff money & power, because Pam knew what Cliff would try and do with it. Plus, even after telling Cliff to resign, Rebecca could have shown Cliff a little more mercy by giving Cliff hope she might still be able to mother to him like he pleaded. But she chose her own pride over giving her son the hope that he could redeem things eventually. Kicking him in the teeth while he was down, and that was the final thing that pushed him over the edge. He was already beaten down and humiliated, and Rebecca's final rejection helped him commit suicide more than what JR did. Cliff was accustomed to JR besting him and would have gotten past it, but losing his mother for good is what pushed him over the edge. Want to blame someone Rebecca ? Fine, blame JR for the setup, but blame Cliff and yourself as well. Cliff was a big boy, and he knew first hand that JR was an apex predator not to be messed with, but Cliff still chose to taunt the apex predator, and he got eaten alive. Cliff was too dumb, incompetent and blinded by trying to out-do the Ewings, to check more closely into the details of the deal, and he paid for it.
@@stormhawk3319 : Yup. JR usually saw Cliff as a “mouse nipping at the heal of a lion.” I was actually watching an episode last night of when Cliff was blackmailing, JR’s secretary, Sly, to give him information about deals that JR was working on, and Cliff stole two of JR deals out from under him. At that time JR was not even thinking about Cliff or messing with him, but Cliff couldn’t help but provoke and mess with JR. After that JR got Sly to work with him to set up Cliff to buy some expensive off-shore oil leases that almost caused Cliff to go bankrupt. But Cliff got lucky and ended up striking oil at the last minute, just before the banks could foreclose on his loans. But point is, yes, Cliff was usually more at fault at perpetuating the Barnes vs Ewing feud then JR was. JR considered Cliff a half-wit that he’d rather not even waste his time bothering with, but sometimes he had to slap Cliff down because he was provoked.

It's a real shame, that this storyline, with Rebecca Wentworth attempting to destroy, the Ewing family, was not brought to fruition with the plot lines of that season of Dallas!!!
You know Rebecca blamed everything on J.R. but she was very hard on Cliff , and so was Sue Ellen ! They BOTH told him they never wanted to see him again !
what i find interesting is jock taught jr everything he knew about wheeling and dealing and how to bring a weak man to his knees but miss.ellie refuse to acknowledge jocks cold and insensitive side...that was displayed many times....when he told her she was over stepping her place when discussing giving southfork to her brother garison...totally dismissing her when she challenged him regarding his supposed platonic relationship with julie gray high tailed it over to ewing oil after her women's intuition allowed her to see through julie's bullshit n told jock its u who always insists the family is together at dinner time...now i'm insisting 6 o clock..dnt 4get n jock turns n tells her nonchalantly...i'm sorry miss. ellie but i've got other plans...
I couldn't even believe the audacity that Ms. Ellie was showing. You would really just give away your house like that, and to give it to a person in Garrison who was presumed dead after 40 years. He was never around for the tough years, he bailed, and then he comes back, you forgive me like it never happened? Give me a break for the love of god. Garrison her brother in my view DESERVED NOTHING, not one dime from the Ewings, he didn't deserve the house, he didn't deserve ABSOULETELY nothing. He bailed when things got tough.
Derek Mathews - you are right - it was Ewing money that saved Southfork when they were going under. No wonder Jock was furious that Ellie would just offer to give the family home away.
Larry was the madman of Malibu. What a life. Two bottles of champagne drank before almost every filming day on Dallas. Half-drunk for every scene in I Dream of Jeannie. Kept boozing and doing drugs even after his liver transplant. When he died his refrigerator was found packed full of pot brownies. Alcohol and addiction is nothing to glorify, I get that, but damn. The man partied like a 20 year old right up to age 81.
He stated that he quit drinking when the doctor told him to or he would be dead in 6 months. Then he got a liver transplant. He said he didn’t drink after that.
Mrs. Ellie is losing her mind, she's as soft as Bobby was. How do you blame JR for Cliffs greed & weakness, while ignoring the fact that Cliff's lifelong ambition was to destroy the Ewings. He got what he deserved.
Yes, but that was the intrigue of the story-line. It was always Cliff going up against JR and then getting slapped down. The show had a way of making you forget that Cliff was instigating the feud all the time because JR's revenge was always do devastating and poignant. The different story lines involving all this were actually well written.
Now I get that if she would have never left, he wouldn't have done what he did, but she left and he tried to commit suicide....then she came to his rescue....Blaming it on JR?....No, if she would have said, "Cliff, I love you and you made a mistake, but I won't leave you AGAIN...….We have finally found each other.....I blame her, not JR....
Rebecca's was being a bitch here and being selfish She fired cliff and told him she didn't care if the deal was fake or not. She even breaks off her relationship with her own son ....again. then he commits suicide and she blames JR? GTFOH. .. she felt guilty so she blamed jr for cliff making the choice to swallow pills Rebecca was responsible so instead she Blames JR. Selfish bitch cliffs agreed is what hurt him
Lol! He committed a crime, embezzled money. Then his idiot mom makes him resign and when he pleads to keep their personal relationship she coldly cuts him off, then blames JR? The mom is terrible. Think it had something to with you mommy?

What bothered me was first the Voting shares storyline was dumb but also the family's short memory. JR should have reminded Ellie and the rest of the family how Cliff dedicated his life to making life hell for the Ewings including trying to have Jock convicted of murder. They should not have cared what JR did to Cliff.
“If that man is dying, it’s because of his own greed, not me.” At this point, however out of character it was, Miss Ellie should’ve given J.R. THE BIGGEST slap he ever got.

The more I think about this scene, who the hell is Rebecca to order Ellie to remove JR as President of Ewing Oil? Lol Especially since she also said that she is going to herself keep the Barnes-Ewing feud alive in order to make trouble for Ewing Oil.
