3:00 They should have Parmelee say back to JR "Just who inthe hell do you think your talking to" as Jock would have said which would have made it more convincing.
This actually wasn't a bad storyline, mainly because of the very strong intense acting of Steve Forrest, and the intense chemistry he had with Barbara Bel Geddes. But the ending was just such a let down, like it was written at the last minute. The writers boxed themselves into a corner and really never carefully thought how it would be resolved. It was certainly better than that Angelica Nero BS or that BD Calhoun crap.
Well, they had originally made him Jock! But, the fans at the time didn't Want that! So, I don't think that they really had a solid plan B to fall back on! As WP was going to be the real Jock!!!
If you saw one scene of Dallas with Jock, you knew right away Parmalee wasn't him. The cadence was off in terms of how he talked. The real Jock would have been more indignant about having to wait for Harv. Also, when JR and Bobby vowed to fight, the real Jock would have said something like "just who in the hell taught you boys how to fight" instead of a smug response. Besides, when Jock walked into a room, he owned the space like a lion. Parmalee, not so much.
Also Parmalee was very passive, waiting on how, what the family would do, Jock a self made man that created an oil empire, a legend in the oil business, would never have waited for anything, he would be aggressively active in getting his company/family back
3:00 They should have Parmelee say back to JR "Just who inthe hell do you think your talking to" as Jock would have said which would have made it more convincing.
Thats right - he passed all the tests including the x-rays thats showed exactly the same injuries jock had endured. After he left they asked themselves how come he passed the polygraph but conveniently forgot about the x-ray. The writers and producers planed to bring Jock back and for some reason at the last minute decided to write Parmallee off. Maybe they had some tests for viewers groups and thought they want to change direction. But i feel this is the lowest point of the whole series, they treated the audience with the least respect. The solution for Bobby's return (the dream) was at least unavoidable but this one was a big disappointment.
There’s no way that JR Ewing would have his son John Ross attend a public school. Rich father who is the CEO & owner of an oil company would have his son in a money rich private school with other rich children.
Christopher S. O' Lucy went to a public high school and a public college. Between the fast food they tended to eat from time to time, kids going to public schools, and the public parks they met at, the Ewings had a pretty every man approach. I believe that was part of the charm.
Jacob Christner Exactly. And not all kids with money attend private school. For the reason you already stated, some parents want their kids to stay in public school. Some public schools are very good.
This storyline was filmed decades ago and years after Jim Davis died and fans of the real Jock are still mad about the idea that they tried to replace Jim Davis 😂. Truthfully I never like the idea of replacing Jim Davis either because Jim Davis is Jock. However, I think the storyline was a good one. Jim Davis’ shoes 👞 are hard to fill but Steve Forest made a noble effort. He was another great actor.
I agree, SF definitely made this storyline watchable, u rooted for him and were willing to dismiss the absurdity of it all! Never mind that Forrest was at least 15 years younger than Jim Davis and didn't have that froggy smokers voice!
The easiest way would've been to get Miss Ellie to take a look at his you-know-what. That would've solved everything. A truly ridiculous story that lead to absolutely nothing.
It was obvious with this storyline they intended for Wes to be Jock. There was never any doubt or hesitation on Wes's part to go up against JR and Bobby's tests. Medical injuries and the same blood type would be impossible to duplicate. They never showed Wes talking to anyone admitting he was running a scam or succeeding in duping the family. The show just abruptly ended the storyline and decided he wasn't Jock due to audience backlash. Wes admitted the truth about himself to Miss Ellie (off camera) and he was gone. His story of wanting a family to replace his was a rather weak excuse for everything he had been claiming.
I watched the show every Friday night and taped it on my beta max vcr as well. Fans flooded lorimar with outrage over making Parmelee Jock Ewing. Fans wouldn’t accept anyone but Jim Davis as Jock Ewing and the producers listened. I’m glad they listened.
Although fan reaction was bad the real reason Wes Parmalee was not Jock was because Patrick Duffy came back after being contacted by Larry Hagman. During the dream season Steve Forrest played Ben Stivers and he was going to be Jock and be a foil for JR since Bobby was gone. But with Bobby back they decided to still go ahead and tell the story but make him a fake.
I’m also glad they listened. Steve Forrest was going to be Jock until the writers buckled under pressure from fans and, suddenly, he was not Jock. The storyline should have never been started to begin with. I know that a lot of people have placed comments on RU-vid stating that they wanted Parmalee to be Jock but I do not agree. The idea of replacing Jim Davis as Jock five years after his death was simply ridiculous. The family had endured the heartache and pain of losing the patriarch of the family. Poor Ellie went through a long denial period before she finally accepted Jock’s death. You also had the intriqing storyline involving Jock’s will and JR and Bobby vying for control of Ewing Oil. On the show, the characters dealt with the death of Jock Ewing just like a real family would. To essentially throw all that away for the sake of some cheesy soap opera “back from the dead” storyline was a lame, desperate attempt at ratings. Like I said, they should have never even started down that road. To abruptly back out of that storyline at the last minute made the whole thing even worse from the standpoint of the viewer!
interesting and fun season especially seeing Bobby having to physically restraining J.R. twice, first with Parmalee and then with Cliff Barnes, actually both Bobby and Ray had to physically restrain J.R. from Cliff... fun scene
The writers cornered themselves with the idea to resurrect Jock. I think the true "victim" is Steve Forrest here. When they realized it wouldn't had passed among the audience, they came up with much more ridiculous reason, who Parmalee was. And what about DNA test? For me, Steve Forrest would had been more believable Jock Ewing than Donna Reed in the role of Miss Ellie.
DNA was not a thing yet thank God because the audience would have believed deep down that it was Jock....Jim Davis as Jock Ewing was equal to JR in popularity so Dallas did the right thing in killing that storyline although the season ended on the worst possible note with Victoria Principal leaving and the Ewings losing Ewing oil
@@therealjd4life On it's original tramsnission back in 1986 I was convinced Wes was gonna come back at the series close to stop the Justice Dept. shutting down Ewing Oil. A pity they didn't do that.
@@Via_The_Void you have to wonder if that was what the original plan was...back then shows were shot 6 weeks in advance so they can pivot if they have to...and they did...if that was today the entire season would have been filmed before the first episode began so whatever the story is remains no matter what...but I'm sorry Parmallee is Jock....Steve Forrest was probably pissed off about it because he was no part of the reveal and 2 seasons in a row he was kinda screwed over
It wasn't compelling anymore after Bobby's death. Even when they brought him back. . . the show had already lost it edge and it just wasn't good storytelling anymore. A big bore actually.
See! After over 35 years the fan still reject the idea of another Jock. LOL 😂 Jim Davis = Jock. Nothing personal against Steve Forest but years ago when I first heard about them bringing Jock back I was not happy about it but I think it was a great storyline in part because it was a mystery. Wes maintained that he was Jock but left because he was rejected as Jock which is actually what the fans did. The fans rejected/ refused to accept the new Jock just like the family did so the character was forced to leave. Great storyline.
I had no problem with Season 8 being Pam's dream. I really do not understand why so many others such as yourself had such an issue with it. I mean Dallas was only a fictional TV show. It was never reality to begin with. Then again I will admit that I have always been a "non-conformist" who has never gone along with what is popular or what the majority of other people think or like. Like having no desire to own a Smartphone for example, which is not important nor is it a necessity as far as I'm concerned. If I can live without a Smartphone so can everyone else. I mean people have the right to do what they want, however from what I have observed about human nature along with society in general, I think the reason why so many people feel that certain technologies are a necessity is because most people believe in "Keeping up with the Jones's" (doing what is popular) instead of being an independent thinker along with lacking the ability to "think for oneself."
@@GeorgeCarlinWasAGodWell aren't you an obnoxious little imbecile. People were upset because A ) It meant they wasted months investing in stories that didn't matter and B.) Because the quality seemed to decline with Bobby's return . The actress who played Donna left be because all the strides that had been made with her character were now gone. Victoria Principal was upset as well. Pam was able to grow after Bobby's death into an extremely strong character and that was now all trashed as well. And at least Nero was a fresh character rather than having the same storylines and rivalries with JR, Cliff and Bobby.
Say what you want, he WAS Jock. He just decided finaly to back away. He got sick of fighting Clayton and the boys. Ellies knew the truth. Thats why we never seen that final goodbye with she and him. You really think she was crying and upset like that because he said he had been faking all along?? Come on. The producers just caved to fans pressure and switched at the last minute. Yet leaving it clear to some of us in a subtle way
I do agreed. Ellie's reaction after the revelation was far from being upset or angry that someone who manipulate her like that. They left it ambiguous to let the fans draw their own conclusions.
I read somewhere that the idea was to bring in Steve Forest as Jock but Jim Davis was such a beloved actor the producers decided to go with Parmalee claiming to be Jock Ewing
This was a long time ago so I forget the details. But how is he trying to pass for Jock? Then who was the other Jock? He taught em how to fight? Like the sons wouldn't notice they switched fathers? Forgive my forgetfulness of the storyline. But at age 12, I was only paying full attention when Victoria Principal, Charlene Tilton, Priscila Presley, and Audrey Landers were on the screen.
I think he was Jock. I just think the producers weren't sure how the fans would handle it ,and they didn't want to disrespect Jim Davis' memory or his impact on the show.
This should have been the last season of Dallas especially after Victoria Principal left and the Ewings lost Ewing Oil. As much as I loved this show, it got bad after this season. I didn’t like the whole look of the show or the synthesized background music. I especially hated the Ray/Jenna storyline and how annoying Ray and Jenna and especially Charlie became.
Once Victoria Principal left that was the beginning of the end for Dallas. If they had kept Steve Forrest on the show as Jock it might've made the show watchable again. We'll never know though.
In this scene, Bobby clearly knew Wes wasn't bluffing. I wish the writers had gone with this, but the fan backlash was too much. Over time, fans would have accepted Steve Forrest as Jock. He really played the part well, particularly in his scenes with Ray. Those were very believable. It just didn't work out. The potential was there, though.
They NEVER intended for him to be Jock. They finished filming the storyline that proved Wes wasn’t Jock, before the first episode of the season aired. The fans had nothing to worry about.
I thought it was a interesting Idea of course back when Dallas was filmed They did not have DNA testing. Fingerprints and dental records was what they had at the time. He said his teeth were replaced but his blood would still be the same so blood tests and fingerprints is all they would need at that time.. Interesting how this could have worked out to continue Jock's roll in Dallas.. Still was a great TV show. miss the show very much....
He wasn't Jock. His whole personality was nothing like his. He was in the helecopter crash with Jock though. When Jock had a really bad fever that's how Wes parmalee learned about the Ewings. Wes parmalee was actually called Wyatt Haynes
Wes was really meant to be the real Jock Ewing, unfortunately the backlash from the shows fans about having Jim Davis replaced by Steve Forrest made the Producers renege on following the storyline through and so Steve disappeared rather abruptly mid season. It worked out okay for Steve though because he had a Gunsmoke movie to shoot not long afterwards.
I always like to believe Jeremy Wendell hired this guy to pose as Jock in an effort to take over Ewing Oil. Wendell even paid this guy millions to replicate Jock’s injuries - to precision - on his own body. It’s just the kind of thing Wendell would do.
I thought he was a good character and a good actor, the only problem is......there was only one Jock Ewing and that was Jim Davis. My memory is a bit foggy but how did they explain that Parmalee didn't much resemble Jock?
@@C5Cse7en He had multiple surgeries for his burns, and his X rays matched Jock's old injuries. He was Jock, clearly. The writers just decided to bail on the idea for whatever reason. We'll never know why, but they missed an opportunity.
@@danielreid3476 They had planned out the story prior to Bobby returning and hired the actor to play Ben Stivers. When Bobby came back via the dream explanation, the producers decided one resurrection was enough. But they had already mapped out the story about Jock returning and didn’t want to waste it. So they repurposed the story for Wes Parmalee, using the same actor, and changed the ending. That’s why it seemed to end so abruptly.
HE HAD TO HAVE BEEN JOCK , CAUSE NO OLD MAN WOULD HANG OUT AT THE PLAY AREA WASTING HIS TIME WATCHING KIDS PLAY IF HIS ANGLE WAS JUST TO FOOL ELLIE AND CASH IN ON THE FORTUNE. THIS IS A CLIFF HANGER WE WILL HAVE TO LIVE WITH.
I am finally glad to see that Bobby and JR are working together! As a team! As brothers! So beautiful to see this! I hope Bobby and JR kick Jock's a$$!
I don't care what the show ended up saying, PARMALEE IS JOCK EWING!!! ... He passed the medical tests and he even passed the lie detector test!!! ... The ONLY reason Wes Parmalee eventually left is because he knew it was causing so much of a disruption to the family, he voluntarily left their lives because he felt it was for their good - another action Jock would have eventually done.
I think the real Jock would never give up, but they had to write Parmalee out somehow.Fans were in a uproar over them trying to replace Jim Davis,so Parmalee had to go
This was when the show was in a tailspin. Piss-Poor writing, different lighting and background music...and JR's acting just wasn't the same. Hagman was drinking alot and lost that "caddy" touch he had in the first 6 seasons.
Still very watchable though, it's one of my most favourite storylines as I'm a big Jock Ewing fan and Steve Forrest just exuded charisma as the Ewing patriarch returned from the dead.
having lost a huge chuck of the audience over the Dream season - the producers felt that having a new Jock would be the final straw - so clearly abandoned the storyline without a proper resolution.
He didn't have any because he was burnt when the chopper crashed in the lake. The chopper caught fire as a result of the collision with the small plane.
Yes, Pam escaped from Dallas Memorial after she saw herself out of the bandages. She didn't want to scare Christopher. It was an awful time. Bobby was devastated and felt so betrayed.
@@donnn-ow4rj how convenient....but its not just about the teeth; other anatomic structures like the shape of the jaw, density of the bone and countless other things that any dentist would have been able to see would also have confirmed or denied that it was the same person.
@@ronyeahright9536 I dont know about all that I am not a dentist. I am just saying he lost all his teeth due to a accident. However it was confirmed 100 percent it was jock by the exact same x ray bone structure as jock . Even having the same gun shot womb
That’s just one use of DNA, paternity testing. DNA can identify anyone for whom he or she really is, because no two individuals have identical DNA, with the exception of identical twins. That’s why DNA is also used in forensics. Cops use DNA to identify criminals, such as rapists and murderers.
I thought this storyline was absouletely outrageous, and disrespectful to the real Jock Ewing. I mean come on for the love of god. This guy was nowhere even close to being the real Jock Ewing.
jim Davis jock was born in 1909, Larry hagman was born in 1931. steve forrest was born in 1925, too young to be JRs father. jim Davis was the only Jock .
I noticed in the TNT reboot JRs age was changed from the actors real age to what we were supposed to be the age JR was at death which i remeber was about 72 years old. Geddes would be edging 95 now or even older i believe if still around
If theyed picked an age appropriate actor who was as tall as Jim Davis and put a wig on him looking like Jim Davis hair id almost been ok with this. I DONT think id been ok with him actually BEING JOCK though unless for sure hed be put back with Ms. Ellie and i doubt had this guy been Jock hed have been allowed back with her and CLayton be tossed aside
Steve Forrest was too young to believably be Jock and simply didn’t resemble him at all. Not to mention he had a completely different voice and speech patterns. That said, they could have had Wes be Jock and keep Clayton on the show too. Ellie decides to take up polygamy.
No con man he was originally suppose to be a "Recast" Jock Ewing but the fans were OUTRAGED over the producers even thinking about bringing a recast for Jim Davis.
