The Long Dark is a thoughtful, exploration-survival experience that challenges solo players to think for themselves as they explore an expansive frozen wilderness in the aftermath of a geomagnetic disaster. There are no zombies -- only you, the cold, and all the threats Mother Nature can muster.

TLD's History:
Let's Play The Long Dark is a first-person survival video game developed and published by Hinterland Studio. The player assumes the role of a crash-landed bush pilot who must survive the frigid Canadian wilderness after a global disaster. The game received seed financing from the Canada Media Fund, and further funding was secured through a successful Kickstarter campaign in October 2013.
An alpha version was released through Steam Early Access in September 2014. The alpha version was later launched on the Xbox One as one of the first two launch titles associated with Microsoft's Game Preview Program in June 2015. Early reviews of the alpha release were generally positive, and the game went on to sell around 750,000 copies by April 2016. It was officially released on all aforementioned platforms on August 1, 2017, as well as for PlayStation 4.

This game has that effect on people going through hard times and I've seen similar comments repeatedly in forums. If you don't play it I'd highly recommend it - when things are difficult and I just want to be alone it's' a therapeutic experience.

I’m glad to be of help. Being that honest in a comment takes more strength than 99% of people have. We all go through rough patches from time to time. Sometimes for no real obvious reasons too. I find those to be the toughest, because there is no specific thing I can attack or fix to solve it. I find that sooner or later it passes and things tend to look more positive. So don’t stress about it, just go with the flow. If it sticks around longer than normal, or starts really screwing up your priorities I life. Then speak with a professional. You’re not alone! ❤️👍

If you really need I suggest you take drugs. It really helps. At least it did for me. Some people get into depression apparently for no reason so you don't even need a solid reason. Just take care of yourself.

In my experience the best way to learn to become as efficient as possible in this game as far as learning how to survive months at a time at the minimum is by watching people like you play it first and your playthroughs are literally the number one reason Im able to enjoy this game because I'm able to have 30+ day sandboxes on interloper instead of dying every 10 minutes and restarting

When there's fog it means there's moisture in the air. As it gets colder, water vapor condenses and precipitates into liquid water, then snow. As it gets warmer, however, solid and liquid water will evaporate and fog, mist, etc. will appear. The Long Dark is not only one of the best, but also one of the truest to life survival games I've ever played, and considering the level of detail they've put in, as demonstrated by the fog = warmth example, is unmatched as far as I know within the genre. As for why clear skies are colder than fog: a clear sky means no clouds. Clouds keep heat from leaving the troposphere (the layer of the atmosphere closest to the ground). It's this same phenomenon that is causing global warming, actually; It's called the greenhouse effect and is the same thing that makes Venus so hot and the absence of it is part of why Mars is so cold. Most of the heat we get actually comes from the mantle and core of the planet, and while the sun does play a part in warming the planet, the Earth itself is the one doing the heavy lifting.

I've watched pretty much every one of your Long Dark series. You don't realize how much food you leave to rot in every play through because you're saving it for a time that never comes. They should add a starving mechanic that drastically lowers you carry weight.

I think that the 4-degree cone is where you can see fine detail, and then it's like a 10 degree cone where it's medium detail, and then like a 60-100 degree cone that can see "yes, that is definitely a shape and a color" And then a 190-210 degree cone that can see basically only movement and color.

Sad I can't upload a picture here (don't use twitter). I just finished hiking the PCT. When I was hiking through Yosemite I took a picture of a trail sign. It was a trail sign for Pleasant Valley. I cracked up and definitely didn't take the trail! 7 months of hiking, and the only game I missed was TLD. Glad to see you still uploading the vids.

hmm, interesting take. i agree. now that you mention it, i think there’s usually a relationship between complexity of games and fanbase aswell. simple fps games and minecraft/roblox are full of kids, but more in-depth games like stalker, scum, long dark have much more mature audiences.

Okay, good, you found out about the importance of Baseline Resource Availability. Hinterland added Custom mode almost 3 years ago but they continue to mystify players with it, even veteran players like yourself. BRA should be set off in a separate area with "warnings" about "do not touch." Or even better, when you select "Stalker" up top, that sets BRA to "Medium" and you can't modify it. Done! Hinterland, you can send me $10,000 for this genius suggestion. So many players imagine they can get something "in between" Stalker and Interloper by choosing one and changing BRA to the other, but you mostly just wind up with what you changed BRA to.

I know this is mainly a side hobby to your full-time job and kids, but as I’m sure you probably already know, this is a pretty rare opportunity to grow your subscriber base. Even one extra 30min video, instead of a full hour, recorded in your spare time, can really leverage the the exposure your channel will be getting for the next 2-3 weeks, by getting those new viewers to engage and like the videos on your channel as much as possible, while you still have their interest. If you drop as a decoy it attracts wolves. If you drop any other way wolves will ignore it and they will not eat it even if by chance they walk directly over it. This can be exploited by dropping stinky items from inventory and quickly pick/placing it over and over. As soon as you pick the wolves turn towards you, as soon as you place they turn away. That's cheaty and I don't do that but it helps explain the game mechanic more clearly.

Your sewing kit is getting used a lot and it's probably going to break soon. You'll probably find another one so no problem, but you need it to make the deerskin boots. Crafting in general degrades sewing kits pretty fast. Assuming you want to save the 4 guts that are currently curing for the boots, you might want to hunt a few rabbits so you can get their guts and make a couple of fishing tackles. You could do that pretty safely in the Ravine and maybe skin the dead deer that is there too. Of course all of that requires some time and going back and forth the same area for three episodes might not be what people want to see, it's up to you. Maybe just get the rabbit you dropped there in the first episode for a single fishing tackle.

When you used the unloaded pistol my jaw dropped in worry. Glad you noticed later. Also, as a former dispatcher (never was LE) I enjoy noticing the little quirks in your narrating that are obv influenced by it. New to your channel brought by Long Dark, have to check out the others, so far so good. Good job, glad you have something completely unrelated to do and disengage.

I've never played this game but judging by the footage and my understanding of the mechanics, what this game needs is some form of farming system. Nothing extensive or complex, maybe just the ability to build small wooden/roofing plots to grow simple crops in small amounts. You'd have to collect and terrace soil, create fertilizer, transplant or raise from seeds, and frequently water the plots. All the fundamentals are already in the game to allow this, Hinterlands just needs to add this feature no differently to any other crafting mechanic or placement mechanic. At the same time they could dabble with a creative game mode that includes building small structures. Nothing as grand as a cabin, but maybe a campsite and some type of fencing? I'm thinking that scrap metal could be broken down for specific reclaimed parts like wire and nails, and adding corrugated iron sheets that need to be carried in hand back to your campsite to start constructing the barriers and windbreaks. If nothing else, having a barbed wire fence creating a first line of defense between you and any bear or wolf that happens to stumble across an outdoors campsite would be a nice help. None of this would need to infringe on existing modes either. It could all be self-contained in a more crafting focused mode. Because right now it seems like the crafting system only reals cares about what you wear, carry or fight with. A lightweight crop system wouldn't take away from the motivation to scavenge either since the requirements to keep it maintained would make it only inviting for players who have already established themselves. These features would probably better serve as a late-game motivation than as an early-game fantasy especially in the sandbox modes.

Hey @Accurize2 - There may yet be hope for your firearms. When you get to Last Resort Cannery, wait for the aurora, and check out the machine bench, you may be able to repair even your ruined firearms and tools there. I haven't tried that yet, but so I've heard.

@@Accurize2 You definitely can repair your main tools there, I have expereimented with repairing those (ie knife, hatchet, hammer, hacksaw, prybar). I don't remember which of them it was but probably a knife and/or hatchet would be my guess. Also, remember to check under the hood of all vehicles you find for batteries. Those are your source of lead to craft new bullets.

I think I didn't mention in your first video but you forgot a rifle ammo near the closet next to the toilet. If you face the toilet entrance, it should be next to the closet to your left
