This week we're with Levi Carlock and Bill Gray the ADWFF District Supervisor Biologist and they're preforming a fawn recruitment study with Auburn University. They're coyote trapping one of two sections of a large piece of land to study not only the effects of intensive predator trapping, but also the effects of good habitat and cover.
Through a brief camera survey, Levi was able to roughly identify the number of coyotes on each section of property. He identified the area with the highest density of coyotes and proceeded to set his traps. Since it's summer, most of the traps were set near den sites, foraging areas, or water. This time of year, coyotes don't travel far so locating their core areas is vital to coyote trapping success.
Through this predator removal, the survival of fawns is greatly increased, but this is only a short term fix. Predator removal is something that needs to be continued in order to stay on top of predator numbers. Levi successfully removed 15 coyotes from the section of property that was trapped. Deer numbers should improve in the short term and research into how habitat helps in regards to improving deer numbers.

I'm not a hunter myself, but I appreciate the work you guys do. My girlfriend works for the FWC (Florida Wildlife Commission) and thanks to her I know how important it is to maintain a balance of wildlife. Not only does it provide food and entertainment for hunters, but it also helps conserve the environment and prevent its finite resources from being exhausted. Thank you for all your hard work!

Hey from Ontario. Good video along with the accurate FACTS. I am a trapper but have never targeted coyotes while trapping. I do hunt them occasionally however, if a farmer is having a problem with them. A large part of the damage here is to livestock, (calves, sheep, goats etc.) in addition to fawns. When we get a call from a farmer who has lost sheep he may have had 4 or 5 killed and not even eaten. When the snow gets deep and the deer yard up fawns become an easier target. The guys I hunt with occasionally have killed up to 50 Coyotes in a season in an area probably no larger than 30 kilometers square, so they certainly are prolific breeders.

86beeman You're right, if left unattended, they're numbers can grow rapidly and decimate other wildlife populations.

Very efficient. Good job in taking care of a need. Coyote lovers don't seem to understand that pets,livestock AND deer (along with perhaps rabbits and squirrels) are ALL in danger with large coyote populations.
@superbutterfree4689
@superbutterfree4689 7 лет назад
coyote populations do better when experiencing persecution. You can kill 7/10 coyotes but those 3 remaining won't have much competition and thus grow much stronger, healthier, and have more pups than normal coyotes would. not only that but many of the animals coyotes' prey upon were at some point overpopulated, causing many ill, old, and weak babies - the opposite of coyotes who now have an evolutionary edge over many species.

i've never trapped coyotes before. i've called them and snared them and various other things. I have a place out here in west texas that's loaded with coyotes and bobcats. I found a full box of assorted traps for sale at a local junk shop and am wanting to know which size to use? the best i can tell is that they're victor traps..mostly rusted but still functional..What size for yotes and cats? also, what should i do to get the rusty traps up to snuff?

Get videos using the info in North Louisiana works great. Are you baiting the camera locations or how do you draw so many yotes to one location?
@ManagementAdvantage
@ManagementAdvantage 9 лет назад
Herbert Newman Finding locations is all about reading the sign and looking at the area/terrain. Camera locations were not baited. Look for high traffic areas such as road intersections or pond dams that funnel coyotes.

I have a question. We took out 2 coyotes during deer season this fall and I trapped 6 males in the month of February. This week I got a double and both were females neither of which was pregnant nor lactating. Does this indicate that we put a good dent in the breeding population? This was all on a 3 acre tract by the way but there is several unmanaged areas adjacent to it.
@ManagementAdvantage
@ManagementAdvantage 8 лет назад
+padriac mccoy More than likely, it was just luck that they weren't pregnant.
@ThePatdaddy83
@ThePatdaddy83 8 лет назад
Dang. Was really hoping that it was a sign that we were really putting a hurting on them. Haven't seen near the deer numbers lately that we did 5 years ago. I guess ten in 6 months is still a heck of an improvement
@howardkimmerle2347
@howardkimmerle2347 7 лет назад
everything helps, but with only 3 acres to work on you are kinda screwed. You are kinda like one city government trying to keep illegal immigration in check, while every city around you does nothing. however I have noticed that in order to cut down on the depredation of mature deer you don't have to annihilate the coyotes, you simply have to break their social structure. If you can get the age structure down and keep them from packing up your winter kill will go down. singles will still nail your fawns. try to get the landowners around you to get on board before its too late.

my question would be if I live in an area where the ground does not freeze like the northern states, is it necessary to 4 coil the traps
@howardkimmerle2347
@howardkimmerle2347 7 лет назад
depends on how often you check your traps, soil type and if your traps are laminated heavy...I used to run the Montana#3 offset, without lamination and two coiled. The only mod I made was adding a base plate and D ring to reduce footwear. That was a sweet trap and for the money and ease of use I think it is the best trap out there. I never had any pull outs and even held several lions. The need for 4 coils is kinda a self inflicted problem. I switched to the Bridger #3 because it has a little bigger kill area. problem was it has sharp jaws and a big alpha (40 lb+) coyote will break his leg and rip out if you don't check daily. so to fix the sharp jaws you gotta laminate the inside and outside of the jaw. Now you have these heavy jaws that are slow to bust out of mud and heavy dirt. If you don't 4 coil you will get cats and the occasional dog that gets caught by the toes again the really big ones can break out. So in order to deal with the heavy jaws we need to 4 coil in order to keep the nice high catches. Reminds me of a song my mom used to sing about an old lady who swallowed a fly and then a frog to get the fly and then a cat to get the frog, why she swallowed the fly I don't know why. after knowing what I know now I would have stuck with the Montana #3, offset, two coil without lamination. (with base plate and D ring) that trap has round jaws so no need for lamination, no need for the 4 coils. it is a great trap. I wish I still had em. only draw back is the pan tension isn't as adjustable without a grinder... but overall that is the best stock coyote trap on the market. The only reason they don't dominate the market is because John Graham who owns the trap isn't the business guy that Tim Caven is who owns Bridger and Minnesota Brand.

I own 56 acres in western IL near Pike County, IL and we have a major coyote problem which has worsened over the past 5 years! I often hear 15 or more in a group all within a half mile of my place, and need to take action now and thin the herd! Any idea of how I can find someone to help me accomplish. We have a coyote killing our poultry, and here in South Carolina the DNR will issue me a depredation permit. Ive never trapped anything besides a mouse. I have seen coyote trapping packages on ebay for around $150 and up, but, I have no idea what to get and what not to get. Duke, Bridger, MB, Sleepy Creek ect ect.. Im sure that they all work . Can you give me some insight and direction. Thanks
@miketurner2945
@miketurner2945 8 лет назад
go with MB or Sleepy creek, just have to buy them once and not make any mods to them. Plus it employs a american when you do.
@howardkimmerle2347
@howardkimmerle2347 7 лет назад
MB 650 are junk. its a clone of the MJ sterling (king of coyote traps) except the trigger mechanism is slightly different and the result is a massive dead zone on the top half of the pan. only the bottom half is a deadly pan and the result is lots of toe catches. lamination is a must with the heavy springs and this trap will bite your fingers off. save your fingers, stay away from the MB 650, the 550 is a sweet trap but you can get two Montana #3's or Bridger's for the same price. something to be said for the American made though. if you are just trying to kill a couple problem critters around the house save yourself the madness of trapping coyotes. It can drive you completely crazy with obsession. go get a dozen snares or call wildlife services and make them deal with it.

It's all about balancing the wildlife. If we don't do it, then there will be an imbalance. Yeah, the deer will end up getting shot and harvested, but that deer has a chance to reproduce offspring in order to balance things out.
@travis9217
@travis9217 6 лет назад
D33P KrE3peR 9 its all about deer management. If the deer can reproduce because a coyote didnt kill it as a fawn, and that deers fawn doesnt get killed by a predator, its all worthwhile.
