After MONTHS of obstacles this EJ25 Subaru Engine is finally ready to go back in the 1999 Legacy Outback AWD. It came in with a coolant leak and oil leak in part 1, we found a leaking water pump. During service we found a seized water pump bolt which broke off during removal. After spending hours attempting a failed extraction in part 2, I gave up and ordered a salvage engine to replace it with. The engine was lost in Virginia during the Yellow Freight trucking company shut down, never to be seen again. Unable to locate a suitable replacement, attempts were restarted to extract the damaged bolt AND stud extractors that broke off in the bolt. In part 3, with the engine on the bench, we were finally able to remove the bolt, but the engine was damaged at the bolt hole and the threads were lost during extraction. During part 4 the block was drilled out and a thread insert called a time-sert was installed. Victory was short lived because immediately after, during the timing belt assembly, the belt tensioner bolt stripped out and pulled the threads. Another time-sert was installed and the engine is finally ready to be installed.

When drilling out the old threads, it's a really good idea to use the water pump as a drilling jig. That will help to keep the bit centered and straight when it grabs.

@@bobbykozak6032 I have about fifteen sizes of Timesert kit, and more than that of Helicoil. The drill bits are generally within a few thousandths of the OD of the threads. I have yet to have the drill bit enlarge the hole in the flange, but I've had quite a few that made it really obvious that the damaged hole had been wallowed to one side by whoever dug the broken chunk of bolt or stud out. It's never a bad idea to engage a little extra precision in locating a thread repair on center.

I think I’d probably still use the old water pump as a guide, to help keep the drill straight, especially given how messed up the original hole was. I’m a huge fan of those Timesert kits, but they’re not as readily available as the helicoil ones, here, so I’m not as familiar with them.

When tapping a blind hole, you can measure the depth of the hole and then put a piece of masking tape on the tap so that the edge is at that distance. Then when the edge of the masking tape hits the surface, you're bottomed out. I also do this with drill bits.

Nice repair Ray. Definitely a good idea to use locktite with that style of thread repair insert. If you happen to need to do a thread repair again in the future the best style of thread repair insert are the ones made by CAT for heavy industrial use if memory serves correctly, they are available in every metric thread size from M2 - M22 and then a number of specific and truly silly large thread sizes above that. They differ from a Time Sert insert by including 4 pins that once the insert is installed and bottomed out the 4 pins are drive flush with the surface and interrupt the larger thread that is drilled and tapped to allow installation of the insert making it a truly permanent repair as the only way to remove the insert once the pins are driven flush is to drill out the insert entirely and install a larger one.
@toddmcclellan979

Yes, the Cat insert with the 4 pins have been around for decades. They are military grade inserts. All the aluminum housings for radio and radar, all the outside threads have to be an insert.

TimeSerts are not fully threaded on the inside. Look closely at the deep end of the insert; the thread isn't finished there. When you run the insert installer through the end as the last part of the process, it both forms that last land of thread and expands the insert a bit to help lock it into place. If you have to install one in a blind hole that's the same depth as the length of the insert, using loctite is pretty much essential. (I've gone through a lot of these in the 50 years that I've turned wrenches.)

I used to work at a British car shop were we had to bring all the cars in at night. We had to double stack the cars on the racks to get them all in. Being British, all the cars had soft tops and all the cars leaked oil. To deal with this, we used to save foam insulation sheets with foil on one side. The foam and foil protected the cars underneath from the oil from the cars above.

I've seen some videos that tested Time-Sert vs Helicoil (and some others). I was shocked to see that Helicoil outperformed Time-Sert when they measured how much pressure they took before a bolt pulled out of them. That said, I still believe Time-Sert is the way to go for a head bolt, because you need the insert to remain fully stable through thousands of cycles of heating and cooling. I used a Time-Cert to fix an oil drain plug that was ruined by a moron at an oil change place, and it was very straight-forward, and I got a great result. The only advice I'd add to their directions is to do everything you can to stabilize yourself when you drill out the old threads, because just a little movement side to side on the drill will give you a hole bigger than you want. I got lucky and, though the hole got a bit expanded because my drill wasn't stable, some red Lock-Tite was enough to give me a permanent seal with no oil leaks. (I did check the Time-Sert website, and they say it is okay to use Lock-Tite if you wish)

Most of the work I do is on classic motorcycles where there are zero placement parts and messing up a thread will mess up your whole millenium. To drill out the threads for a Time-sert I use a jig to hold the drill absolutely square OR use some super glue to attach a washer over the hole with the correct ID so the drill does not wander. There's nothing more exciting than installing a beautiful-looking Time-sert that's off center so the hole doesn't line up with the part.

Timeserts are a similar concept. It's knurled on the outer edge of the counter sunk flange. Plus the install tools deforms the insert to provide an interference fit along the entire length. When done properly it widens the insert jamming it into the metal. They work the best on aluminum, but can be used on cast iron blocks as well.

Hi Ray. I always love your videos and watch with great interest. I'd like to offer a tip if I may be so bold. When drilling for the countersink on the insert, you could have stopped part way into the drilling, turned the insert upside down, then checked with your eyecrometer that the shoulder of the insert was the same height as the depth of your countersink. That way the insert wouldn't have ended up deeper than the face of the block. Not that it matters that much as I see you have done another quality repair. Keep up the good work, and stay safe from the storm.

Watching the west coast landfall as I watch this vid. Probably waste most of its energy on the big bend area but still can crank some rain. Fun to ride along with Ray, regardless!

@Ray; when you do the rear main seal on the Subaru block, I'd recommend also re-sealing the wrist pin access covers. They are also known to leak.

Get yourself some Z bar used in drywall construction. Form a runner top and bottom so you can slip the plywood in and then fix with screws through the Z bar. That way the runners can stay up all the time. . Now that's what I call hurricane prep😉 On another note though, if you had a generator you wouldn't need to take all those lumens 😂😂

Hi Ray. I'm a meteorologist who has been forecasting tropical cyclones worldwide since 1980. I was actually forecasting for Idalia (E-doll-i-a) the past 4-5 days. As it passed to your west, the peak sustained (1-min average) wind in Sarasota was 37 mph (just below tropical storm strength). Peak gust was 68 mph. Basically, the area from Sarasota to Tampa did not even receive sustained tropical storm force winds with Idalia. The hurricane passed far enough offshore that the tropical storm sustained winds remained just offshore. Wind gusts (brief bursts of wind) reached 60-70 mph, however.

Had the "move over" law take hold here in Ohio. About 3 years ago, got pulled over as I spaced it! Sunday morning on the freeway. Called it the "bored trooper" ticket as it was an easy target.

It’s called a bottom tap, flat at the tip to run threads to the very bottom and pulls chips back out

Just a suggestion. I have used JDM engine out of Japan. They specialize in lower mileage engines because Japans EPA is even more strict than the USA's. I Have used them several time for hard to find engines with exceptional results. Used paypal each time. Usually the ,motors have 75,000 miles or less. Just a thought. on your application I found motors ranging from $2,399.00 to $849.00. Just a thought. Love your videos...

the supplied drill has four flats on the end and it's intended that you use a tap wrench to drill the remnants of the old thread by hand

80mph winds.. a good fall or spring storm. They don't have the rain so much here, and they have a tendency to end up with 100+ circular sustained gusts. Them are when you need to be worried. Stay safe and dry.

Ray, I would urge you to get some padlocks for the roll up doors. If some criminal scum got in and had access to the car keys, they could just drive them out. This happened to a friend of mine that had a HVAC business. They came in, loaded up his truck and drove it out with his stuff in it. You and your family stay safe!

Seeing as how you live in FLA where hurricanes are a regular occurrence you would think your power co would have the brains to bury the power lines protecting them from storm damage. Here in Cal the power lines have been burning up in the forest fires so the state has ordered the power co to bury ours. They complained it will take 20 years to do them all & the judge told them 'Then you better get started.' !

The slow down and move over law in NY was passed years ago. One of the folks who was killed was a good friend of mine who ran a tow company that did some of my tows. The law was expanded to include pretty much any vehicle displaying warning lights after his death. I'm beginning to think that if I lived in Florida I'd just own a nice plot of land with a top of the line RV on it... "HMM, storms coming, let's move for the week"..
