An abused Seiko Lord Matic has turned up on the bench and this thing needs some serious TLC. Tune it to watch a full restoration of this vintage little gem, can we bring it back to its former glory? that is the question.
For anyone that are interested in viewing the service manual I mentioned, link is below:

When I was 10 years old, my father gave me his Load Matic. I have used it for no less than 48 years, and I have paid far more amount to maintain it than the original price of it. 😢

Wonderful restoration job! It is written in case back in Japanese: 25 years of service for the company. Mr. M Fujii must have felt proud for his service when he received the watch from the company. I’m not sure but it looks like the Mitsui & Co. logo.

Heya. Great job. Some glass polishing tips for you. Take 'em or leave 'em as you see fit... When your goal is a crystal clear mirror polish, use more grits; less than double the grit value. Use up to 2000+ grit wet/dry before switching to glass polish. Each grit will remove the previous grit's scratches, so if you change sanding directions for each grit, you can easily see when it's time to switch to the next one. Take the glass out of the case. You can use CA glue to glue a handle of some sort to the back of the glass if needed. When done, some gentle heat and acetone will remove the glue. Use a float glass plate or other very very flat surface for sanding. Lastly, to know when you're done, reflected light edges will be very sharp. You will be able to clearly see details of the reflected light fixture. Don't stop until you're there. Cheers.

Its cool to see a first go on a 5606! thanks for that. I've done a dozen or more and I've come to realize that the hacking spring is held in place by the balance cock and should be taken out with the balance and replaced at the end with the balance - thank you Spencer Kline for that one. Typically you would install the spring at the beginning along with the lever but the spring will go upheld as you work, even after you install the main bridge. Lastly, besides something like molykote dx or mobius 8213/8212/8302 to the barrel wall, you're not really supposed to put oil on mainspring like that. If anything a light wipe down of 8200 before winding just to keep it from tarnishing.

With the vintage seikos I use sandpaper up to 4000 (... 2000, 2500, 3000, 4000), before I get to the glass polishing pastes (I use 3 of those). Even before the paste, the 4000 gives it a finished look. Everything by hand, never risk it with a dremel. You ve done a great job! It's the result that matters. Got here because I just bought 2 LMs for restoration and I'm eager to familiarise myself with the 5606. Thank you for this video! Yeah, the plastic date star. That will be annoying.

Great job done here, plastic parts used by manufacturers are cheap and lightweight. In the end, always a source of troubles to come. Plastic hardens over time and becomes very breakable. You did good bringing this iconic watch back to life! Congratulations!

I have this exact watch and my date quickset stopped working awhile back. I've been debating cracking it open and attempting to fix it myself, but after watching this, it looks far more involved then I'm willing to attempt. I wouldn't mind attempting it, but by the time you purchase all the special tools, you could have just sent it off for cheaper and made sure it got fixed right.

I thought I'd messed up by using this as my first full service. Granted I practised on the ETA 6497 loads first, but the clarity of your presentation allowed me to convert a none functioning eBay cheapo LM into a fully functional watch (mainspring was bust and oils had dried up and I pinged the setting lever wheel spring into the 4th dimension). Cousins came to the rescue with 5 replacement springs for £5 and a main spring for £16. Its been running a couple of weeks now and pretty well (+/- 15s), so thank you from someone who's wife describes him as an unhinged do-it-yourselfer.

Hi Justin, another great job. I also have a bit of a fancy for the 60s and 70s Seikos and I think you got this one done very cheap. I dunno about others but I'd say $250 to fully revive an LM is not a bad price, and it's never about the street price, is it? We aren't dealers, we're hobbyists. I recall a video or 2 ago asking if a staking set was in your near future and whaddaya know, you said yes and there it is! One tip I can give you with sanding is to tape the whole sheet to a sturdy piece of glass and move the piece in largish figure 8 moves. That way it saves our work bench getting wet and the piece gets evenly sanded in all directions. More importantly, it gets sanded *flat*; well actually parallel to the glass but for our purposes they end up the same. Going in circles can easily give you a slanted or bowed result. Cheers and once again great job
@jsgwatches
@jsgwatches 2 года назад
Thanks Alan, I plan to do a tutorial video on the glass cleaning alone as I’ve been impressed with the results I’ve got so far. Will definitely try this figure of 8 technique, appreciate the tip 🙏 JSG

the problem is that a functioning day date star fetches $70 alone and as long as King Seikos 5626 need them, they'll get plucked. I suspect that if this particular LM goes on the market it could very well get swapped to a KS.

This movement/case appears to uses a 300W76GN which Sternkreuz makes new for about £4 and is indistinguishable from an Seiko NOS - I've purchases both. Always worth taking a look. It's also best practice to separate the glass from the case as it looks like you're polishing the bezel as well and most likely needlessly flooding the crystal gasket with cerium oxide.
@jsgwatches
@jsgwatches 2 года назад
I will definitely look into those crystals! And you are not wrong about the cerium oxide flooding the gasket, the case needs a solid clean in the ultrasonic to shake the solution free. JSG

$50 for a flat crystal is a tad much. The AM ones go for $10 max from Sternkeuz. I have a 5206-5080 which has a faceted crystal. Try restoring a multi sided crystal 😁 I gave up in the end, well my fingers did. I went on the hunt and the only place was Yahoo auctions. A watch forum friend was about to make a large order so he added it to his list. I ended up paying £35 including all the shipping etc. It came with both gaskets too. Absolutely transformed my watch after I refinished the case and cleaned up the bracelet. Still undecided whether to try to remove the sharp dent from the clasp or not. I haven't touched the movement as it works and has strong numbers but the date won't manually change. The crown is locked and won't turn. The 52xx movements don't suffer from the plastic part in the 56xx ones so I'm stumped.

The LM special (5206 and 5216) is in fact a completely different watch from the 56XX series and differs in almost every way - case design, movement, factory and even functionality, all of it. The 56XX series has a very unique train layout while the 52XX is typical swiss. The term Lordmatic is only really meant to distinguish price points for marketing purposes. Also if a non functioning day/date is annoying you can go for the 5601 LM three hander but they often go for more then a 5606 with non functioning day/date, haha strange right?

Hello. Nice video I liked it all. As a Seiko nut I am still surprised I’ve not worked on a 5606 I have 3 to restore but just never got around to them ! You clearly are English and London by the sounds of it so what cleaning fluid can’t you get? I still rate Essence of Renata for a good hairspring degreaser. As for crystal don’t bother looking for originals as you can get any domed , flat or tension ring on aftermarket for little money from cousins. Sternkruez make decent ones. I’d only seek out original Seikos on acrylic flanged or special facet ones. The gear you will have bought from Adrian as they are good. A guy in my Facebook group recently 3D printed the 4 teeth ones which he was selling for $5 each. They work good apparently. I have 5 in stock as I know two of my watches have the fault. Also been looking at that jewellers tool myself recently! Will buy it now I think.

Thanks boss, appreciate the kind words from one of the RU-vid watchmaking pioneers themselves 🙏 Your ears are not wrong regarding my accent, however, I’m currently living over in Southeast Asia. Main issue I’m finding is importing any branded cleaning fluids, all couriers will not touch them due to them being a hazardous substance, frustrating to say the least! I am also slowly becoming a Seiko-Holic, it must be contagious.
@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches 2 года назад
@@jsgwatches haha once you start on Seiko there is no stopping you! I’ve been trying to wean myself off them for the last year.. Real shame you can’t get cleaning fluids. With things like Renata it’s just a particular fluid which I believe you can obtain non branded for half the price. Same with Bergeon one dip which apparently is 99% the same as Dry cleaning fluid! Just take care worth these products as they are carcinogenic. I liked your style of video. Not dissimilar to my own, I have to say I can’t voice over like you guys do as I find having 45-60 minutes of footage impossible to talk for that long. It’s more natural for me to do this as I go along and also makes for a more genuine experience to see the mistakes as they happen. I really need a DSLR with a lens like you use, I know nothing about cameras and also I do have limited space on the roll top bench but really want to improve on that front this year. So any tips on cameras , small and light is what I need! Keep doing what your doing as your channel is good. Took me 12 months to 1000 subs so your well ahead on that game. Good luck and I will subscribe!

Exactly my issue with this watch, crazy to think that a complete watch is mostly cheaper than some of the parts alone! JSG

did you forget the cap jewel lube?

Cap jewels oiled but my microscope footage wasn’t the best so I left it out, I may put it on my Instagram page. This movement has a mixture of diashock and diafix cap jewels, the diafix shock settings were a challenge!

this is precisely the main problem that today almost any watch cannot be repaired. For example, we have practically no watchmakers in New York, you can change the battery at a shoemaker's for 10 dollars, which is much more expensive than most cheap Chinese watches, or in a jewelry store your watch can be taken and sent to no one knows who, for no one knows what kind of repair. however, it will be very expensive. on the other hand, I once saw in a very provincial Walmart the new Seiko 5 for $ 30 !!!! at a discount. Naturally, there is no point in repairing. But this means something completely different that watchmakers are simply killing their profession today, and so the vast majority walk with an Apple Watch. With this attitude, when Yes, the minimum service becomes simply impossible, it is very difficult to explain to a person Why do you need to buy a watch? and by the way it took me less than one second on eBay to find a sapphire crystal for a dollar how can a simple glass replacement be so expensive?

I do not think that it’s a good idea to change the date between the 21:00 and 01:00 hour

Fantastic example of something just not worth repairing. One of the few Seiko models with a factory design flaw - the plastic quick set date. If you have the skills and patience and can fix yourself, good luck to you. Otherwise, cost to repair is prohibitive. I bought one described as “mint” only to find it had the common fault . I knew nothing of this prior to buying, as thought Seikos were all design masterpieces. On sold it immediately, declaring the fault. Do yourself a favour and buy a Lord Quartz!!

Great job, but too much whining about costs. You have ended up with a watch that is worth more than $500 on the market. A generic crystal from Cousins would have cost you very little.

Until you start ordering tools, it is called horology, once you start ordering, it is called horrorlogy. Damn everything expensive about watches. Spare parts, consumables, cleaners, tools every fricking tiny thing is expensive.
