When a "Quick Flip" Goes Wrong: FRUSTRATING Side Table Makeover

CHARITY CHALLENGE! I challenged other furniture flipping RU-vidrs to flip a piece of furniture and donate the piece or the proceeds of the sale of the piece to charity or someone in need.
Playlist link: • 2023 Furniture Flippin...
I thought this little mid century side table would be the perfect charity flip. Single side tables don't typically sell well, and it was a great opportunity for me to show how I tackle simple projects. Turns out, removing that old damaged finish was ANYTHING but simple, and it was the single most frustrating flip of the year. Am I happy with the end results? Not really. But I did what I could, and it's certainly going to be able to be used and loved. It just wasn't what I was picturing in my head for the final result.
Be sure to curl up on the couch and watch the whole playlist, as these talented folks flip furniture for the sake of others. ❤️ Everyone wins here, but I WILL be donating a prize to a special winner of the group.

Although that side table was problematic, it gave you, and us, another learning opportunity about what to try, and try again, in order to get the piece where you want it to be. I think it turned out superb! Oh, and thank you for issuing this excellent challenge to the other refinishers to support charity. 💞💗💖

This was timely for me….I was putting together a new grill today….I figured 3-4 hours at the most. Nope. 7.5 hours later I finally finished it, after ruining 5 bits and having to go borrow a different kind from my brother due to a manufacturing screw up. A lot of 🤬 here, too!! 😬😬

Love the darker colour that you gave it. It made for a far richer-looking finish than I believe it would have had when new. It really elevated that little table. I bought a small table from the thrift store that I could see had potential, and it "nearly brought me to my knees"! It was painted a Pepto-Bismol pink, and when I tried to strip it, I discovered that it was pine wood. It turned mushy when it got wet. Eventually I did get it refinished and it turned out great! But getting there was h*ll.

Probably a 'hostess' table where cooked meats are cut on it in flat bottom hot trays/platters. A restaurant or dining room side table so to speak. Treated with very thick heat-resistant lacquer. The scooped edge frame of the top catches any errant cooking liquids when serving from it.

Angie- is there a way to renew the darker brown of the walnut that I see on the inside of the solid walnut dresser I’m refinishing? When I look at the inside it is the beautiful deep brown I want. I know the outside is faded. Is their a way to get that back that isn’t stain? If not, what type of stain should I use? I think the dresser is from mid to late 1800’s. It’s an Empire style with a wishbone mirror (according to Mr Google) I almost forgot to say “beautiful job on that table!” More patience than should be needed! Just magnificent!

I live in Canada as well and I was wondering if you had to pick another choice besides Odies oil to put on a raw wood piece what would it be? Just a finish not a stain, some other type of wipe on finish.

Oh Angie, I refinished an exterior door that was in our kitchen,,.which I thought would be “easy breezy”. The finish was that yellow-orangey tan that was popular in the 80’s. It was just like this table. I was ready to put it in the dump. I scraped, I stripped (not me) and I sanded. And then I did it again. I finally got it “good enough” and called it a day. The other side that was in the kitchen looked great painted white. Whew!!! I felt your pain.

I once got to remove varnish from a mid-century coffee table. And after the chemical stripper has done literally nothing, I immediately knew it's "fantastic" polyester varnish. Which you can either remove mechanically (sand/scape) or with heat (which wasn't my opinion as the top was veneer). So, it took me 9h to sand and scrape and not damage the veneer. I so feel your pain with this table ❤

Oh gosh i HATE refinishing deilcrafts lol did one and NEVER again! Takes much much longer for some reason
@TranscendFurnitureGallery
@TranscendFurnitureGallery 8 месяцев назад
It was bruuuuutal! Deilcraft had their own multilayer finish they called “duradeil mar-resistant finish”, often referred to as “party proof”. I can’t seem to find any articles showing exactly what that is comprised of, but it a bugger to get rid of. lol

You made a very pretty side table out of that. Don't short change what you accomplished with that one. You could have very well burned it up from your frustration with stripping it. Blessings on your day.😊

I understand your tendency to self criticize - I’m also one of those that fights perfectionist tendencies. In this case tho, I think your criticism is misplaced, or, perhaps, too critical. The table is lovely and shows the love of the process and art that you invested into it. You take each project as a challenge - taking something functional (or potentially so) but old, unattractive, wobbly or broken, definitely unloved, then using skill and creativity make it new again.

Hi Andrea, I just had a similar difficult finish situation with a vintage Ethan Allen triple dresser. I think the dresser is solid maple. When I tried sanding the top with 80 grain nothing came off. I tried scrapping but like you it was clear that wasn’t going to give me any results either. I wasn’t sure if it was shellac or lacquer so I first tried denatured alcohol…Nothing. Then I went looking through the shelves and found some old lacquer thinner. It did dissolve some of the finish and made a gooey mess. I ended up scrubbing off the entire finish, little section by section using steel wool lacquer thinner and paper towels. It took me nearly two hours. When I was done and sanded the top I was careful to use 180 grit as to not blow through the veneer. Turns out it was a solid wood piece with routed edges and after sanding through the grits, the top came out looking great…so I also muttered some words which cannot be printed here..but so worth the effort! Thanks for being such an inspiration and saving these sad unloved pieces..and being generous!

Angie, you apparently have the patience of Job. If I had to deal with such a stubborn finish, I probably would have sanded it as smooth as possible and painted it. It's a lovely little table, though, and will make someone very happy once it's auctioned off.

New subscriber from New Zealand here, really loving your content and it is really inspiring me. I've taken some of your tips and am using them to help sand back an old Rimu table of my daughters. One issue I have is she had gauged out some parts with a pen drawing on it and although sanded back, whenever I put any cleaning liquid on, the scratches still seem to show darker than the rest of the wood . Do you have any videos covering this? Thanks heaps 😊

I do have some videos posted that deal with extreme scratching etc. If you scroll through my posted content under the Videos heading, you can see everything I have up. This one specifically comes to mind though, that may help - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vKT1fsifLRY.html

I dont know if it would have helped, but sometimes i put plastic wrap over the stripper and leave it overnight. Mostly because i have run out of swears, but, you know😅 came out amazing!

Circa 1850 only takes about a minute to actually work so it would technically slow me down by covering it. For less potent strippers, it is beneficial though.

Angie I think that is a cute little end table and I am glad you saved it from the landfill. I think we are our biggest critics because we can still see the flaws in everything we make. No one else does but we do. You take so much care in what you do and it shows. Sometimes, like with this little end table, you have to step back and say "It looks fine". And that is what you did but it bugs you. LOL You are doing great and I have loved every piece of furniture you have done (in the last year in a half, which is when I found your channel). Keep up the good work for a good cause! I will see you next time! Take care!

I’ve dealt with the same or similar finish before. It was some poly or some other plastic that was impervious to all strippers known to humanity. After scraping and even using a heat gun I sanded it with 60 grit ! There’s still finish on it! At least you succeeded, very nicely I would say. As for profanity, I’m all for it as long as it’s done with passion!

It didn't turn out how you'd have liked it to and it was a lot of sweat equity for such a small piece, but it went to a good cause and you should feel good about that aspect. Also, thank you for taking us on the journey of some of the struggles, you powered through and it's all we can do. Keep your ultimate goal of less furniture in landfills, donating/charity fundraisers, and your art. Great job. ❤

Am watching another video where you talk about doing a skill share to build your self confidence. You are my favorite furniture restorer to watch. Your steps are clear, you point out problematic areas and your taste level is elegant. But, my favorite reason is you have a lovely voice to listen to. Soft, liquid, musical vouce. I also value your commitment to saving these old pieces and bunny rescue. Thank you for serving in a modest sustainable way.
