It's ironic that he mentions that time means little to the inhabitants-a group of people who pray at five quite strict times a day, strictly abide by time, and lead lives like clockwork. Not to mention Surah Al-Asr, which even swears by time, particularly in a country where, according to him, 80% of the population are Muslims who also follow the Quran...
@@eugeniev-a4not necessarily. Praying 5 times a day does not make you extreme. It just makes you a practicing Muslim. Extremism happens went one imposes their ideas on others with no room for varying. “Everyone must be the same”. Being Muslim is voluntary or it’s performative.

Europeans have always thought - and still think - that they are better than us. But it's really a matter of perspective. They think we are unsanitary but they don't even wash their behinds, the narrator complained about not wearing gloves as if there's no bakery in Europe where people don't where gloves and Italian wine isn't made by people stomping grapes with their bare feet he also complained about flies getting on bread as if there's yet to be a hot dog stand to be touched by insects. It's also a matter of ignorance, because the narrator is missing cultural context and doesn't understand that even the feet of the baker are probably cleaner than the narrator's face because he washes them 5 times a day. So it's a sense of superiority mixed with a lack of knowledge.
Syrian Aleppo Soap was born more than 4,000 years ago in the city of Aleppo in ancient Mesopotamia, which long competed for the title of oldest city in the world with Damascus. It is to the French crusaders that we owe its discovery and its importation to the old European continent." The oldest ones often say that they were not ill even if food storage was not as sanitized as today. Because they were eating fresh foods, not industrial processed food with pesticids...
Interestengly, Damascus iron came from Central Asia. The same generic damascus metal processing methodology was lost, the current damascus metal is the different metal indeed.
What I find interesting is the drastic change in footwear over the decades. If you look at Damascus today everyone is wearing sandals, flip flops, slides. Back then they all wore closed toe shoes. They weren’t like “it’s hot and I’m more comfortable in casual clothes” like the way people complain today.

Cheap soaps 🤣, how rude that was ,maybe he didnt knew tgat soaps was invented in syria or iraq in 9th ceuntry ,and wasnt used by europeans until centuries later🤣
I think it was said here more as a "non expensive " (compare to imported soaps you could by in western europs back then) more than "non quality" one. He said the same about oranges. Only today people uses the word "cheap" to refer to something of bad quality, back then people say it to mean "affordable", so it's a good thing and it WAS cheap (and of course probably way better than any soap from factories)
How are you offended by him saying cheap soap? He didnt even say "soaps" as that would be incorrect English to add an -s to a non count noun, so I think you may not be a native English speaker, but youre a bit overly sensitive about him observing the cheap price of the soap. How is that a reason to go on the defensive? You realize that western countries were at their economic height at this point, so everything in any country was cheap for them. I guarantee you a homeless person in London could afford 50 bars of this cheap soap.

my guess would be that the commentary was added much later, the original being a silent movie documentary. The Ottomans left Syria in 1918. Perhaps the commentator wasn´t even there and was basing his comments on the footage we are seeing right now.
nope. You can see it is after the British take over (1918) since the Jaffa gate soundings are better organized and the Othman clock tower doesn't exist anymore. Tiding this area was the first move of Storrs, the British military governor of the city . in addition, the film depicts mainly Muslims- which can be attributed in such proportions to the city only after the 1920's, when many of them came from Egypt and Arabia. Until the British era Muslims where a minority in town: e,g. According to the Othman census of 1905 from a total population of 32,400 people- 13,300 were Jews, 11,000 were Christians and only 8,100 were Muslims. The Muslims did not care much abut Jerusalem. The city was a backwater town in the Othman Damascus Eyalet. It was only after the interest by the empires in the 19th century and the rise of Zionism that Palestine and Jerusalem were developed, and Muslims immigrated in droves to the area and city . You can also see the dome of the rock prior to its coverage by gold in 1966 by the Jordanian, as an attempt to elevate its importance. Unfortunately the Muslim still treat the city very poorly. the Muslim quarter is dirty and unkept. the Muslims ruin their own archeology and disregard their own rich history in the city (Rashidun, Umayyad, Abbasid, Fatimid, Kurds (Saladin), Mamluk and Othman). It is a shame that people that supposedly claim their devotion to the city are unable to meet minimal standards of respect to this place- as owners, or more properly as custodians- since it is not something you can "own", as if it is a 2nd hand car.
That's a lot of Kurds in Damascus Syria. I recognize their traditional clothing anywhere. I think out of everyone in the Middle East, Kurds and the Saudi's mainly continue to wear their traditional clothing to this day, in everyday settings.

Why? That's the truth. The British mandate for Palestine (also known as "the Land of Israel") - not ever a Palestinian state. It has nothing to do with what people now call Palestine or the people who claim ownership on it (so called "Palestinians"), I assume that's what you're referring to. Not sure what your point is. Zionism began in the 1800s, and Israel became a country in 1948. However, in 1938 there were close to 500,000 Jews living in Palestine (which was called that by the British beginning in 1918 - not the Arab population prior to that). The Jewish presence in Jerusalem (which was the Jewish capitol beginning 1000 BC) was huge and included such institutions such as The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Palestine Symphony Orchestra (composed of Jewish musicians), The Jerusalem Post, etc., all of which still exist today.
