Dame Helen Mirren isn't shy about telling people her age, but Ellen broke the news to Helen that she's actually a year younger than she thought she was - and that might have made her entire life.
I don't see why the audience and Ellen laughed when she showed enthusiasm for GPS and other "simple" technology. I'm sure most of them can't explain how a GPS works. I'm in science and only 34, yet find a simple tv and telephone fascinating. Only because we use these stuff on daily basis, pure genius behind each of them shouldn't be ignored. Each of them took brilliant minds to be invented. Needless to say, Helen is the epitome of class.
Most things seem much more simple when you don't understand any of it. "It is just an iPhone and it works. Don't know how as well be magic, but I'm sure it is very simple. I mean it was a human who designed it after all?"
Sonia it's just the way of thinking. Scientist loves to enjoy how the technology evolves and it's very true that the technology development is actually not that easy as most people think. But for people nowadays who enjoy the upgrade of cell phone or other tech very fast can take for granted tho. Older people tend to stay for one phase of technology longer than people these days so they appreciate the technology more #imo
It's true, the magic and complexity of seemingly simple technology should be appreciated! It takes a while damn building full of people to make Uber pool work!
I agree, just started driving lessons recently and I think cars are amazing too!! Each time I marvel at the way it moves, turns and is able to do so much at the same time. Phones, wifi, the internet, it's all pretty incredible if you think about it. However most of us are so used to these everyday machines that we forget about them.
Helen Mirren is pure class. I agree with her that technology is amazing and GPS is incredible. Very refreshing she see's it for what it is, millions of years in the making.
totally agree....finesse nuanced facially expressive .....prefer English literary drama anytime to lurid denseness which depends on trying to be amusing at the expense of others
I agree with the comments about Ellen coming across as rude and crass , I think Helen Mirren showed her class by remaining polite, forthcoming and actually being more amusing than Ellen . I think Ellen forgets that sometimes people like the person she is interviewing more than they like Ellen herself and sometimes the people she interviews are more famous than her too...which Ellen clearly forgets sometimes.# tickets on herself.
Ellen is rude and can't hide a sort of jealousy of the charm and elegance (talking about manners and intelligent sense of humour) of Helen Mirren. Ellen sadly turned out to be a fiasco ...
I found Ellen annoying in this interview. Maybe it's because Helen Mirren was so elegant and gracious the jokes seemed inappropriate and unnecessary. Also not funny.
I agree--and it's so obvious on camera. I don't know if Ellen is just having a bad day, or if she's passive aggressive. What is clear is that Ellen was not able to "walk in her shoes" for the duration of the interview.
It’s currently 8:56 pm on December 12, 2018. A news article from the NYT just popped up on my cell phone from AppleNews. The headlines reads; ‘Ellen Degeneres is not as nice as you think. Feeling boxed in by her reputation, she told us she’s considering leaving daytime TV’. I always thought Ellen had this sort of double personality. I think she’s great at what she does and she can be genuine at times but she also has this dark side to her that shines throw at times. Not sure.
My thoughts exactly. I like Ellen, but I think she is a very moody person and easily annoyed. Besides she doesn't do well with classy or eccentric. She likes screaming and bending to her jokes people from the audience.
GPS a big invention? A big invention, for me, is one that utterly changes the course of human lives. People managed to get from Point A to Point B for CENTURIES before GPS was invented. It's a nice gadget...but if it went away tomorrow, not a whole lot would change. Unless you're under 30, and never learned to read a map.
You just have to look at a gps from a different perspective or any technology for that matter. I often marvel at the simplest of technologies because I imagine that I’m a time traveler coming from the 1910s or something. It makes you realize how cool and futuristic everything is
The Global Positioning System only seems like a "gadget" if you know nothing about it. GPS underpins every aspect of our modern global economy, to include the Internet, electrical grids, air and sea navigation/shipping, radio, and television. You depend on it every day, and not just when you want to find the nearest doughnut shop.
This was fantastic. So friendly & warm, these two. THANK you, Ellen, for your brilliant work & this fabulous life you've earned, that you share with us!
GPS wasn’t around when she was young, so she’s right to be amazed at its invention. None of younguns knows how to use a map because we’re so used to having google maps on our smartphones. Before I got a smartphone, I still remember the days when I used to write down precise directions on a post it note from google maps on my computer! That was only 5-6 years ago!
i sometimes get confused between Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep cuz they're both so amazing and although helen is older they're so honest and classy and straight forward... not fake at all. new actors and actresses pretend alot but these older ones know what its like to work hard all their lives
The reality is it's called wisdom and that really in every sense can only come from age, if you've experienced a lot and have a decent amount of logic should get you to that stage.
I had almost the exact conversation with my mom. She though she was 53, turning 54 this year, and I actually had to tell her she's 52 and will turn 53, haha. She was so happy!
We need more shows like this..enjoyable simple conversation like I grew up around..no one putting anyone down or arguing over anything . It's one of the only things that makes me smile that I watch anymore
And a great credit to their mother for the sense of humility and legacy of humanity she instilled in them even in the limited time they had together here on Earth. 🇬🇧🌹💕
I love her personality and how energetic she is. I hope I will be like that at that age. She seems to have kept her wonder, enthusiasm and appreciation of life and that helps to keep you young.
Ellen needs to show more respect to her superior in this interview and stop being such a narcissist. She's lucky that Helen didn't tackle her as she could well have done!
Totally agree it was embarrwssing yo watch her mocking her "how simple things amaze her "" i LOVED how polite and gracious Helen was with her answer so classy,
Ty I just rewatched because of your comment sending a notification to me about this video, and while okay narcissist isn’t what I’d agree with but Ellen is a really warm host normally - I rewatched and still feel Ellen wasn’t her normal kind loving self and she just seems to have a condescending attitude to Helen Mirren the Great. But just an opinion. I still like Ellen very much :) she doesn’t need to be a perfect person to be a beloved host and comedienne.
