Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Katherine Ciesinski & Kathleen Battle - Final Trio - Der Rosenkavalier 

I love Rosenkavalier despite its longeurs, but whenever I return from a trip the very first thing I put on is the Trio with Kiri. It is my Welcome Home, and I agree that nothing in operatic literature stirs me like this. From that amazing Hab Mir’s gelobt to the sublime climax, there is hardly anything like it in all opera. I only wish there were more other-worldly moments of genius in Strauss's output. When he was on, he was definitely on -- and quite often, But there is also a lot of Grade B filler music in his works.

And yet that is a beautiful recording! Maybe that kind of dynamic makes for great performance art....

Funny comment! thanks! sounds like Ms Battle was just that - nomen est omen! Like her colleagues wearing t-shirst saying 'I survived the Battle' But nevertheless - WHAT A VOICE! Spendid! Heaven to hear that trio sung so well...

There is a well known incident where she bashed on the piano during a recital in Australia because the accompanist wasn't playing to her exact preference. Word got around very quickly (I'm in NZ)
