i left NZ 11 years ago as a poor disillusioned maori guy with no qualifications, the first job i got here was the same low end job i had back home but paid double the money plus the other benefits with australian income. 11 years later im on six figures with NO qualifications. that would NEVER happen back in NZ. I applied for PR and citizenship 1 and half year ago and have just passed the final step now just waiting for citizenship confirmation. Our house on the Gold Coast is insulated and we only turn on the aircon for about 2 months of the year, most of the time it's at least 5 degrees cooler inside the house than out because we have large trees on the hill behind us that shade the roof. I moved to Aussie in 1999, attracted by the lower cost of living and better wages. I would not describe myself as a go-getter or an over-achiever, but I have never been on the dole a day in my life, and I always knew that government dependency would never get me anywhere. I eventually found an opportunity to get some workplace training in a large business process outsourcer (basically a call centre that had large contracts, initially with Telstra, but then with a government department) and that allowed me to earn a solid, inflation-adjusted income with superannuation, annual leave and sickness benefits, something I never had in NZ as I never completed a degree. So, no you don't have to be the cream of the cream to be successful in Australia, you just need to find a niche and be hard working and productive, and you will be rewarded for it. A lot of Kiwis work in my industry, and one of them explained it to me this way "In NZ, you live to work, in Australia you work to live". I think that extra 25-30% of income allows you to plan your life and have what you need, without being constantly burnt out trying to put food on the table. The socialist tax and spend economy in NZ unfortunately allows the average Kiwi to pay tax, but not to spend on themselves, whereas the pollies get to spend all they like, in large measure on themselves, and because the ticket to increasing their income is more tax, there is no limit to how far they will go in that direction. Unfortunately, there is no incentive even for a National government to change that status quo, so while they may tweak a few things at the edges, unless there is radical change, which would mean too many hard decisions that would lose them the votes of the welfare dependents, something that is not ever going to be on the cards, NZ will keep going down the tubes.

We need to be able to afford to pay our skilled workers enough that staying here makes more financial sense than going overseas where, depending on their industry, they could make up to twice what they'd make here for the same qualifications and experience. For example, I just managed to get my foot in the door in IT here after literally years of trying, and as soon as I've got a few years' experience under my belt, I'm going to seriously consider looking to other countries to work that have higher wages, lower taxes, or even lower costs of living. Why are a lot of people not leaving? Because of the comfort level. But if it continues to get less comfortable (and it will for over 30s) a vast amount of capital value holders will go elsewhere. Not just the bright and potential young wealth creators. It’s sometimes forgotten that the reason for the largest immigration periods to NZ (1840-1910, 1945-1960) were driven by hope for opportunity and freedom from a stagnant social structure. But today look at the falling populations of the Old World; there is a vacuum appearing that will suck in people who are disenfranchised or economically stifled. The migrations have started with the poor and unskilled, but will quickly favour those with more to offer. We are vulnerable to this drain, regardless of where you stand politically and socially on changes to our society. If I keep being labelled an outsider and coloniser, I might just as well be that in a new, more welcoming and favourable country.

“We spend a lot of money to educate these people?” Is that supposed to be a joke? Last time I checked, tertiary education wasn’t free in N.Z my guy. Students spend tens of thousands of dollars on tertiary education in this country only then to be offered jobs that pay crap money compared to other so called first world nations, that’s why they leave. Simple.

New Zealand nurses don't want to go and live in the Phillipines, and the Phillipines don't want or need our nurses. Cancel that, nurses from the UK and Australia can't afford to come here, because the pay is s**t.

Damien Grant is an Auckland business owner and opinion contributor for Stuff. He wrote...."In the year ending March this year, 52,000 Kiwis left these shores and 28,000 returned. Trend is that those born here do not want to live here; and we can see this in the demographics. Stats NZ has a great little program and one fun bit of analysis is to compare the population by age. I drilled down to 2020 and 2022. The cohort aged in their twenties has fallen by 36,000 between the year of the great lockdown and today. Low productivity, high debt and an under-performing education sector was driving the growing disparity in incomes. If the income gap were to start widening again, migration from New Zealand could also increase materially further. More and more people are heard asking themselves ‘why do I stay?’.

My family and I are one of the few unvaxed Kiwis ,thanks to living in Asia. I am amazed how many people I know in NZ , followed like sheep to be forced by a Stalinist government to have the Vax. There are so many stupid policies all NZ governments have implemented in the past decades , it is no wonder thousands of awake Kiwis are fleeing NZ. The numbers should be in the millions. In 1974 I was part of a group of young Kiwi's who had a farewell dinner and left NZ . In Australia I became rich . NZ system rewards business people poorly . Without prosperous business people there will be no decent growth. Talk of wealth tax , added to very high taxes is more than foolish. I have lived in Asia for the past 12 years . Asians think mostly opposite to NZ'ers. The Asian system rewards Capitalists. NZ does not. Unless NZ has a radical change the way it thinks , the next decade at least, will be one of decline. Cripes this is what has happened since the 1840's ...NZers left during the Māori Wars, then the Musket Wars, Then Gold was discovered in Otago.......Dunedin boomed as did Otago.... but demographically GMnt wanted to get more Pakeha to move to Duckland to balance the demographics.......Frozen meat and Freezing works were set up in Otago; with the first Frozen meat coming out of Oamaru for the Mother Country ..........New Zealand's economy out performed Australia's right up until 1971 in terms of income, education, welfare....and then Britain's little Farm got kicked in the guts and Japan's Iron Ore and Coal Mine took off! So Kiwi have been moving all over the place, the strange thing is looking at the Demographics of Māori, North Island ones went through aperiod of moving to Christchurch and Southland for different reasons.... but now masses move to StrayYa

The vast majority of leaving Kiwis is just the lag being picked up from the pandemic - the normal outflow of younger NZers off on their OE. It is completely false, contrary to Damien Grant's nonsense, that NZers are flocking off because other places are noticeably better. The US, Australia, the UK most of Europe etc., are all suffering significant cost of living increases and widening wealth inequality. And most at higher rates than NZ. There will always be tons of people in their 20s leaving and nothing that the government can do will keep them here when the appeal of traveling before putting down permanent roots is high. The same people will always whinge about NZ but never acknowledge that most places they talk fondly of have higher personal taxes, similar or higher consumption taxes, and wealth or capital gains taxes.

To be honest there are a lot of Aussies who are getting pretty angry about the current labor governments immigration policy. They are allowing 650,000 into the country this year which is more than the population of the state of Tasmania (575,000). We are already struggling to provide even basic infrastructure like housing for our existing population without continually adding to the problem. The majority of these people will move into the urban sprawl of cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and I,m pretty sure that they wont come here with the skills that we need to fill existing labour shortfalls. Most will be coming from poorer countries chasing that fabled pot of gold that they have been told exists here. My advice to undecided kiwis is to stay in NZ eventually the tables will turn as it seems to cycle like that with changes of governments. If you do decide that you want to live here take out dual citizenship that way you can still travel freely between both countries, you will remain a kiwi and you wont run the risk of being deported if things happen to go pear shaped.

I would have preferred to remain in NZ. It was the 1970's. I had completed my professional training. I wanted to start a family. I could easily afford a mortgage, No mortgage was available, I knew that wages were higher in Australia, but this alone, would not have drawn me. In Australia the institutions were galloping to hand out mortgages. Best of all, I chose a place where I had access to six months duck shooting. (the vegans have since got it banned, so I was holidaying in NZ for the opening weekend). For more than 30 years, I have been running my own businesses. I left NZ, with very little cash and am now worth millions. The weather is far kinder to my health. I used to enjoy N.Zs acceptance of strange people. In NZ I knew Communists, hippies, some of Carmen's drag queen performers, as well as farmers and other sensible people. The variety was quite enjoyable. Most of the time I felt very safe, as there was not a lot of violent crime. There were very adequate long term care facilities for very psychotic people.
