Well this is weird. This morning I heard this song for the first time in a long time and here you are commenting on my comment. There goes the rest of my day I guess
" You give me miles and miles of mountains, and I ask for the sea." Damn straight! What a poetic way of describing when love that was good goes bad....
i believe that line means that even tho she gives him this kind go love (mountains) and while it is not bad and all, it's just not what he wants, they both want different things hence he's asking for something else (the sea)
I'd just like to add my interpretation to the conversation. I think it is about love gone bad, but not because either person stopped caring or because they want the next thing. I think it's about two people who just cannot fulfill each others needs no matter how hard they try. Giving someone miles and miles of mountains seems to imply they are trying desperately to make their partner happy, but they ask for the sea, meaning they need something completely different than what is being offered. Even though what is being offered is actually quite a lot and probably requires a lot of effort and possibly even love, it just isn't what that person needs to be happy. I think that makes it even more tragic. It's not about someone losing interest in the relationship; it's about two people who keep trying and failing to make each other happy. Anyway, that's just my interpretation.
Absolutely brilliant. Raw . Lisa has the voice of an angel. Stripped back. No drums or percussion Rice uses his voice as an additional instrument. This album has a very special place in my heart .
the best part of damien rice is that he doesn't write about love in the same fluffy way that most other singers do. he represents it in a really different light, which is something i really enjoy from him. when everyone else is singing about love more directly and really sexual, or just fluffed up... damien is singing about love when it's just raw and natural. there's no glam behind it and it's not done up. it's about the components of love and not just love itself, you know? he does it differently than everyone else. not just in the lyrical department, either. the strings and the piano are used a lot in his songs, and i admire it, because no matter what those two instruments will always be the most soothing for me instead of what i usually hear. i don't know i just really love damien rice thank you for reading this huge block of text tldr damien sings about love 'raw' rather than 'glam' and his use of instruments is calming. inb4 "pop is ok too sometimes" it sure is but i prefer this. have your own taste if you want
I've been noticing lately that the majority of my favorite songs have that same essence to them. That rawness you can't quite put your finger on...that really hits the feels. A lot of them also have cello & piano too, actually. Re Damien...I feel like he kinda lost a lot when Lisa Flannigan stopped working with him. Such incredible harmonies. Her voice is something really special, feels Ike it brought out the honesty & truth even more.
I agree!! Even the lyrics of Blowers Daughter, the last line is so surprising(for a love song) and raw "I can't take my mind My mind my mind 'Til I find somebody new"
[Verse 1: Damien Rice] Don't hold yourself like that You'll hurt your knees Well I kissed your mouth and back But that's all I need Don't build your world around Volcanoes melt you down [Chorus: Damien Rice & Lisa Hannigan] What I am to you is not real What I am to you, you do not need What I am to you is not what you mean to me You give me miles and miles of mountains And I'll ask for the sea [Verse 2: Lisa Hannigan] Don't throw yourself like that In front of me I kissed your mouth, your back Is that all you need? Don't drag my love around Volcanoes melt me down [Chorus: Damien Rice & Lisa Hannigan] What I am to you is not real What I am to you, you do not need What I am to you is not what you mean to me You give me miles and miles of mountains And I'll ask . . [Bridge: Damien Rice] What I give to you Is just what I'm going through This is nothing new, no no Just another phase of finding What I really need Is what makes me bleed But like a new disease Lord, she's still too young to treat What I am to you (oh she's still too young) (Volcanoes melt you down) Is not real, (she's still too young) What I am to you, (oh she's still too young) (Volcanoes melt you down) You do not need (she's still too young) What I am to you (oh she's still too young) (Volcanoes melt you down) Is not real, (she's still too young) What I am to you, (oh she's still too young) (Volcanoes melt you down) You do not need (she's still too young) What I am to you (oh she's still too young) (Volcanoes melt you down) Is not real, (she's still too young) What I am to you, (oh she's still too young) (Volcanoes melt you down) You do not need (she's still too young) What I am to you (oh she's still too young) (Volcanoes melt you down) Is not real, (she's still too young) What I am to you, (oh she's still too young) (Volcanoes melt you down) You do not need (she's still too young) What I am to you (oh she's still too young) (I kissed your mouth) (Volcanoes melt you down) Is not real, (she's still too young) What I am to you, (oh she's still too young) (I kissed your mouth) (Volcanoes melt you down) You do not need (she's still too young) And what I am to you (oh she's still too young) (I kissed your mouth) (Volcanoes melt you down) Is not real, (she's still too young) What I am to you, (oh she's still too young) (I kissed your mouth) (Volcanoes melt you down) You do not need (she's still too young) You do not need me
+Andrew Park she is an alto. he is a tenor. they both ate amazing. but technically his range and pitch are more valuable. and he hits falsetto without a drop in vocal integrity. as a singer myself. I can attest to how hard that is to do. he's got a fantastic control over his voice. can be attained with enough practice by anyone with talent vocally, but most never get there. notice how when she goes high you can hear her volume drop, this is not on purpose or meant to be. it's because she struggles to get on top of the note. she's got a beautiful voice. Not saying she doesn't. but he is better.
+Thomas Wilton I'm not saying you're wrong but could part of that volume point be how he generally stays closer to the mic unless he's belting something out? I've noticed when she goes higher she pulls back or faces away in a lot of performances. Love both their voices, especially hers in Eskimo
I've been listening to Damien Rice for years here...and there! I describe him as the 'thinking man's melancholy' the songs Volcano. .9 C rimes...the Blower's daughter... Etc...are pure inner soul! They break me somehow, and then heal me! .
This still slays me after all these years. Such a powerful and evocative song. I wish a choreographer would create a dance set to this. I am so grateful to these artists for stirring up such strong emotion in me.
Then, you should expose everyone in your life with it at least once. Not everyone will like it. And that's OK. But if you introduce 100 people to a song that you love, and there's only one person likes it... then HELL YEAH... Mission Accomplished! There's that bond. They will always think about you when they hear it. They will play it for their other friends. One of them is likely to latch onto the song too. That's the beauty of how music works. MUSIC IS A TIME MACHINE!
+Shaheen Beeharry -- totally connected to the song... that is always what I aspire to in performance, and what it is that keeps me from being connected? They are perfection...
I think they are deeply in love with each other. However, the difference in their age is creating different “needs” from both. I think it’s about maturity and ultimately letting her go..... because he realizes she has to live and experience life, so they can hopefully be on the same page some day. He doesn’t want to let her go, he does it for her. Love ❤️ this song
Or maybe they just weren’t right for each other? And it’s better she never looked back. Not everything is some fairytale love story where they end up finding their way back to each other.
@@cookiesarelikecream true, but then he wrote ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ILqjAVWywb0.html Fairy tales don’t exist, now explain that to the 💜
In this song the girls trying to do everything to please the guy but whatever she does cant please him enough bc of her age and she just want to please him and she want him to love her but she what ever she does she still cant please him bc of how she is to young
Literally everyone but her is the one to me. You can say that about all the other people but you don't have the right to say that about the one person who is that one person.
I'm 21 now and when I was younger my father listened to this music a lot and now I'm stuck listening to it today, I should thank my father for playing this in the car all the time even though I remember hating the music. :)
This album has been a huge part of my life since I was a baby, with my mother playing these songs to soothe me to sleep on restless nights. And it’s chilling, yet relaxed tones set me in such a pleasant mood, bringing me happy memories of childhood and how close to my heart this is.
Listening in 2020 after fighting addiction and suicidal tendencies, the pain hits more now than ever ....trying to reach out to another person who I love dearly , fighting the same fight I went through......don't fold
Saw him live tonight at the Orpheum Theater and I have to say he was absolutely amazing. This song was soooo goood. Definitely need to see him live again. 😊😊👍👍
Such a beautiful song. I first heard this song it was way back in mid school. I had all but forgotten it, until the melody popped into my head and when I found it and heard it again, it really made me emotional. Thanks for this video.
Been a while since I last listened to this song... I'm hitting the replay button over and over.... It still has the same effect on me that it always has.

Wow! I saw you when you first played on Letterman, he my favorite to. The 3 of you blew my mind!!! The Cello and it just fkn works... Y'all Rock!!! Huge fan.. HM
i remember seeing this for the first time back when it was first released on VH1 (in 2002). It was just mesmerizing. And unlike today, I had to loiter in and around VH1 for the next few hours until they played it again. Its 20+ years later, and its just as hypnotizing today as it was back then.
I honestly don't have any clue how there are 400 people who didn't think this was amazing. I get if Its not you're style or something. But respect the talent before you. this is beautifully performed.
