"Mekong River gives everything. Mekong river is mother," says one local. The river's cultural, environmental and economic significance is unmeasurable. But despite the threat of earthquakes, extinction of species and food shortages, the dream of hydropower - and the money it brings - is driving governments to turn its torrents into peaceful reservoirs. European consultant Poyry, who are working on the Xayaburi dam, have been accused by environmentalists of giving the Laotian government, "badly misleading advice". Meanwhile, fisheries expert Ian Baird points out, "the very people that regional governments and international organizations are spending a lot of time trying to alleviate from poverty are the ones who are going to be impacted".

International Director , It collapsed because as they began to become oil rich - they got more goats so they could get more wife's , to have more children . Those goats ate every shrub that was standing - and the desert started taking over the city - then they started needing more building material for all there people ! clay is one of the only building materials so they used all the top soil for building , then also the dam came . They used up all the topsoil for building so they had to use more fertilizers to improve the soil . So much so the Nile river became the most polluted river in the world . See how things have an effect . Overpopulation is the biggest problem in the world today . Also i dont like the way the world is progressing , development for whom as the man says is important .

I read a few years back - as there is less freshwater flow from the Mekong, the salty sea water is running into the delta up to 50 miles. As such, there is no fresh water for the southern Vietnamese rice fields. I don't remember if there was also an impact on Thai rice production. Anyway, there was a rice shortage - maybe 5 or so years ago.

I live in North Thailand, and have been to the Mekong ( a 30-40 mile ride) hundreds of times. Across the river is an Air America town. Still there...Vientiene Laos. The Mekonng is THE most important .....ANYTHING in the SEA area. Nothing else comes close. And the Chinese are stealing every bit of the water from their downstream "end-users" . This has been an unending source of very irritable friction. Laos, for example is the ONLY landlocked SEA country, so it relies on the Mekong unlike ANY other country. For transportation, industry, food, drinking water, irrigation..... I am almost glad I am old so I will not see the final insults of the destruction of the river. This is no "snail darter" situation. This is an entire nation , and parts of at least 3 other nations. It hurts to see what they are doing . Vietnam will be least affected. Laos MOST affected...Cambodia is very reiant as wel. Thailand, since it has so very much oceanfront water ... like the Gulf of Thailand... that it can get by with diminished flow of the Mekong. But the Lao and Thais are so close .... This just pisses me off.

Dams ruin river eco systems. Fish ladders do not work. There is no debate. The U.S. learned its lesson, and for the past 10 years has been removing defunct, and abandoned dams and weirs from the river systems. The recovery of the rivers has been astounding especially in the pacific northwest. What a shame that corporate greed has won in this case.

Yeah. So I've been visiting island communities in Northern Cambodia for the last few days. Many of these communities have been around for hundred+ years but the river is changing. Some of the farmers are forced to make their own fish farms now because they can't catch enough to feed their small communities. Many village chiefs just blame over fishing but the irregular water flow (probably climate change and dams) is having really damaging effects... And it doesn't appear to be improving. Most of these communities mentioned how they don't think this is going to be sustainable for future generations if conditions don't improve. The dolphins here in Kratie are dwindling too. I think erosion is also affecting the safety of the Cantor Softshell turtle. It is becoming harder for them to find safe spaces on the shore to lay eggs. I hope we can start working together as human beings and make our world better.

Looks like the Chinese dams and transport system are a built to benefit China and also a pretext for wholesale invasion and colonization of Southeast Asia. The Chinese are moving into Laos and establishing a permanent foothold in the poor country, spreading their influence and coercion. We were in Laos recently and saw construction debris were dumped all over the countryside without regard to the local population. Chinese people, businesses, and products flooded the country. I'm afraid a cultural genocide is taking place and the poor Laotians are too innocent to realize it.

All countries that depend on the Mekong need to work together. Putting profits before people never works and I hope that there wrong doing will bite them on the arse ten fold. Karma is a bitch and will not forget

Multiple dams are not devastating this area, over population is . Everyone complains there are not enough fish in the river ,no there are to many people using the river to supply energy food and transportation.Humans are the problem not dams.

They should leave the river alone. build some nukes and coal-fired plants for electric power. No free lunch but the fisheries are too important to people living along the river.

This is horrible but... Ever hear of the Colorado River? it used to flow into a delta in Mexico... but no more since the Hoover Dam. I dont think that the Hoover has as much an impact as Dams on the Mekong would have and are currently affecting the Mekong. We need to find an alternative or modification of Dam Technology but these countries dont have the money or time to do this research or are to corrupt to care.

The dam had condemned all the people living downstream to hardship. Stop building anymore dam otherwise, it will induce frictions among surrounding countries

Dams ALWAYS have devastating effects on the riparian rights of others and on the environment. Think of the Hoover dam and its effects downstream. Then think of the amount of water reaching Mexico via the Rio Grande. We are quick to blame others but never blame ourselves.

Dams do not let the water flow and so it silts and stagnates
