This is yet another film that tries to "fix" existing plotlines without understanding why they need updating and whether they even need fixing at all. It picks the easiest, laziest answer and runs with it. How do you fix the damsel in distress? Simple, you make her a warrior. There's so many better ways to address the trope. Your rewrite was a great one. I feel like this movie exists like a lot of modern media solely to get brownie points for how progressive it is and what not. Except it's all surface level. If you cast a black woman as the stepmom, only to kill her off without doing anything with her, you might as well skip it. I feel like Shrek handled the fearsome dragon subversion way better than this movie.
Agreed that they didn't do enough to take any of those stale or outdated elements in a different direction, so what could've been fun and refreshing ultimately felt like more of the same. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. Really appreciate it!
The real irony of this film is that from the trailers, I thought it would be an adaptation of the Prince Lindworm fairytale, a fairytale that doesn't have a damsel in distress and already could work with a similar setup. Instead of adapting a lesser known fairytale that doesn't have the trope they're ""subverting"" they just made something up to complain about a trope that hasn't been played straight in decades
I've never heard of Lindworm so I'll check it out, but you're right that while the trope exists, we don't really have as much coming out that fits it. A lot of people compared it to the other princess movie that came out that I haven't seen with the girl who was best known for the Kissing Booth movies at the time. From what I gather, people liked that movie more. Thanks for leaving a comment!
The chalk part likely makes sense depending on the rocks in the cavern. Many rocks will work as chalk. It just needs to be a different hardness and color from the walls themselves. I used to do that with shist that was common in my driveway growing up. The harder quartz with bits of soft mica was easy to use on the slate common to my area. I could also use brown shale to write on grey slate. Both are native to my location. Keep in mind that using rocks as chalk is a way to identify rocks. Also, chalk is a rock, a type of limestone. Limestone caves are common. In my opinion this is a rare sign of cleverness in the script. Not brilliance, but at least better than the rest of the story.
Definitely! I collected rocks and minerals growing up, probably still have stuff from science club thrown in a box somewhere, and pretty much everyone had decorative limestone we used to draw on driveways and the road with. I can't think of anyone who didn't draw with stones they found out playing. It was more a joke about the pipeline into the room, picturing them all being so prepared, like students asked by the teacher to come and write their names on the board lol But absolutely, having them scrape at the wall with shards versus having what looks like literal manufactured chalk from a box is the minimum I'd expect from the art department for the situation the princesses were in to not feel contrived. Thanks for the comment!
This was an awesome review! You're hilarious and I'd love to see your version of this film 😁 My favorite part of this film was the birds on fire scene i think, though the dragon design was cool too! You've got a new subscriber, excited to watch some more of your videos!
The bird scene was so great! Probably my favorite too. Thank you so much for the comment. It can be tricky to grow in this space without doing things the most youtubey way possible, so it makes me happy that you found my little corner and enjoyed it!
34:14 I think the point of portraying the dragon to be less of a beast, could also be directed in a way that the dragon starts with only animalistic roars and sound, to not only catch audience off-guard once it spoke, but also ties well in showing how its opening up more and more! Just food for thought haha
@@streamcometrueNoo, Thank YOU for reviewing and rewriting what could have been more than just another generic film! You were able to show us even with only few changes and ofcourse your top-tier humor, we could already have a better plot! Alot wasted oppurtunities in the OG production TT
