I liked the second one because of how it explores Maleficent's race. I also really liked the designs 😊 (btw really good video, I love watching long essay videos like thi)

Hi! Thanks so much for watching. Sorry it took so long to reply. The sequel was pretty cool getting to see where Maleficent comes from. I like how they built that world!

@@streamcometrue Although the Remake has some narrative issues, and that it and it's sequel are vastly different from the original Disney film, which in of itself is an adaptation of the Charles Perrault telling, I do like that they want to make this world feel more interesting. If I were to be honest, I love what the remake did in telling it's own fairy folklore, based on various concepts in the past (which I'll be glad to comment on if you want to hear more). What also interests me about the remake and it's sequel is that Maleficent's origin in the first movie of the AU, before setting up the main story, could be a subtle reference to what the original Charles Perrault telling said about the Old Fairy who wasn't invited. In the Charles Perrault telling, on top of being uninvited because of a lack of gold plates, she was presumed dead before Aurora was born. The fact they took that detail from the Charles Perrault telling, which even Walt himself didn't go into great detail on, and use it as a plotpoint to make Stefan become the twist villain of the narrative, makes this all the more sad and tragic that Maleficent would be betrayed (which, judging by your comment within the video at 5:30, I'm sure you would agree with). As a sidenote, since they rewrote it so that Maleficent would give the failsafe to her own spell, that would mean one of the fairies wouldn't have to waste their original gift for a failsafe (like in the original Disney film), which also means Aurora would now have a gift of intellect or any other useful vice the fairies would've given her. I'd argue that rebooting Maleficent made more sense than what they did with Rebooting Cruella. Cruella was purposefully meant to be completely evil, even from the original Dodie Smith story; in contrast to the reboot depicting Cruella as being the heroine, when it completely contradicts with the original narrative for both Disney and Smith.

I like maleficent. it's a refreshing original world building for a disney remake, didn't even think to compare with the original since they're so different

I enjoy it as well. It's a shame it usually gets lumped in with other "soulless cash grab Disney remakes" when it really is so much more. Such a lovely reimagining. Thanks for watching!

Also, that wing-cutting scene was probably one of the best allegories for sexual assault we have ever seen on a screen.

I actually like that the prince's mom gets turned into a goat instead of dying. If they'd killed her she would've at least died with the satisfaction of feeling justified in hating the fae, and other people probably would've doubled down on that same prejudice. But as a goat, she'll live the rest of her life as a dirty animal, a laughingstock, and a complete failure, which for her especially is probably worse than death, and the fact that she can technically be turned back at any time makes Maleficent, and by extension the other fae, look more merciful
@streamcometrue
@streamcometrue 3 месяца назад
Oh, certainly! Forcing her to suffer as the butt of a joke is fine. My issue was the tone of the execution. It made it feel teehee rather than like a fitting punishment. A lot of adventure and fantasy stories do that where a villain commits all sorts of atrocities, yet the response when it's time to face the music is, "Ha, they stepped in poop. We sure got 'em!" It doesn't work for me and Disney has shown in other films that they're capable of handling that better when they go the non-lethal route. Thanks so much leaving a thoughtful comment!

Wow, RU-vid did something right today by recommending this video. Started watching then remembered that I hadn't seen the sequel so popped off to watch that then came back. So thanks for making me watch Mistress of Evil, it was a fun ride and it's always a treat to see Jolie in that makeup and those beautiful horns. This was a really interesting review, now I'm going to rummage through your channel.

Ooh! I'm happy my video was recommended as well then if it led you to see a movie you enjoyed! She really was great in this role and the makeup is iconic. I hope you'll find more to enjoy as I get a chance to upload more. Thanks for watching!

I always was 50/50 on Melificent’s motivations in this and the original. In the remake, it truly fleshes her out and makes her evil deeds so much more tragic. But I also like the original cause her motives felt very in keeping with the folklore of the Fey in myth. They were dangerous, spiteful, and extremely petty, often going to elaborate ends to screw over people who did nearly nothing to annoy them
@streamcometrue
@streamcometrue 3 месяца назад
Totally! That's a great thing to take into consideration, the actual fae folklore and how that explains Mal's behaviors. It makes the original feel more like an accurate fairy tale. Thanks for the comment!

Borah is a desert dark faery, so they´re kinda more resilent to iron indeed by the resistance to dry and warm climate-environment. Maleficent and the other main guy seems to be temperate-forest dark faeries so they aren´t so resistant. So far it seems were 4 groups of dark faeries: the Desert ones, the Forest ones, the Iced/Snowy Cold Mountain Peak ones and the Jungle Rainforest ones.

On the Latin American Spanish dub, King John actually indeed says "you" instead of "her" when is attacked by his wife while being scared by Maleficent´s threathening sight. However there it´s left kinda more ambiguous as it could meant "you" either to the Queen next to him or was talking about Maleficent, so the dubbing was even more proficient than the original English, unless that actually the King thought that it was something that Maleficent was doing against him instead of his own wife right next behind him.

Loved this video!! I like how you try to give grace to the movie and make justifications for its choices - you didn’t have to, but it was a nice thing to do! And it makes your critiques more impactful since you’re trying your darndest to make the movie make sense

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I always try to see movies from different angles as a writer, and I think it naturally opens me up to giving more consideration to how some things could or do work. Rather than just saying something like "this is dumb" and not expanding on why or how and how to change or reframe it. More impactful is an interesting way to think of it, I appreciate it!

Yeah a lot of things on Maleficent 2 are much left over and needed more work on to fill up the gaps with more information, specially regarding important things as the dark faeries.

Queen Ingrith somehow got retrieved the enchanted spindle-wheel from Stephan´s castle some time later after Aurora became the Queen of her father´s kingdom and also merged it with the Moors after Maleficent also named her regent then, but on the dinning scene when everyone is talking there, Ingrith mentions about Stephan´s castle besides the one which happens to be on the Moors and couldn´t be noticed too much because it´s done by organic materials, but then Aurora mentions she didn´t lived there in all, so it was left over for all the people which wanted to live there, either the nobles, the army or the common folk there and to keep their own part there. So as Aurora or Maleficent didn´t cared about what happened on the human kingdom, they didn´t noticed or acknowledged when someone retrieved something from that forsaken castle, and it seems the spindle-wheel wasn´t destroyed when the curse stroke on Aurora, neither someone cared to do something with that thing.

Something that bothered me on this later film and it was never addresed on is that actually there is even a third castle in ruins on the Moors or nearby to it, where Maleficent went to spend some time after recovering of Stephan´s betrayal and before returning into the Moors to became totally the queen there. It could be actually the lost kingdom which Ingrith mentions she came before marrying King John, and which got doomed by the clash with fairy-folk on the Moors neighors to it. However this lore was never properly connected, and it seems that Maleficent or Diaval didn´t told Aurora about that third castle on their domains.

Yes, I feel like the world had a lot about it that could still be explored to expand on the history of the moors and the fae. Thanks so much for the thoughtful comments!

Lovely video! I liked and subscribed immediately- this is my fave type of content! I didn't realize upon clicking that I already watched your Rebel Moon commentary (I have a sick fascination with that dumpster fire. If you ever feel like doing part 2...😳) Anyway, I _love_ the background music you used in this. It's deffo about to be playing in my head all day and I don't mind. I just have one question, and maybe I missed something, but who the heck is the kid who appears in the sequel as Mal's sidekick?? Was he the raven from the first film, turned dragon, turn raven-human hybrid? I kinda love how his existence is never addressed lol (unless you talk about it later in the vid, I'm only about halfway through). Anyway, thanks again, and good luck!

I only remember the raven she turned into a human in the first movie that's still with her in the second. Unless that's who you meant lol Thanks again!
