Dan Crary's influence taught generations of guitarists how to flatpick. In this excerpt, Dan remembers another flatpick guitar giant, Tony Rice. Dan relates Tony's influence to acoustic guitar and bluegrass much like he does Earl Scruggs' importance to bluegrass music.
David Anthony Rice (June 8, 1951 - December 25, 2020), known professionally as Tony Rice, was an American guitarist and bluegrass musician. He was an influential acoustic guitar player in bluegrass, progressive bluegrass, newgrass and acoustic jazz. He was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame in 2013.
Rice's music spans the range of acoustic from traditional bluegrass to jazz-influenced New Acoustic music to songwriter-oriented folk. Over the course of his career, he played alongside J. D. Crowe and the New South, David Grisman (during the formation of "Dawg Music") and Jerry Garcia, led his own Tony Rice Unit, collaborated with Norman Blake, recorded with his brothers Wyatt, Ron, and Larry, and co-founded the Bluegrass Album Band. He recorded with drums, piano, soprano sax, as well as with traditional bluegrass instrumentation.

In the 1970s and 80s, Watson, Crary, Blake, and Rice were the Four Horsemen. 'Nuff said.

I agree 100%. IMHO they still are. It's a shame a lot of folks today are forgetting these flatpicking masters.

Nice listening to Dan (DC) talk about TR and Doc, three of my favorite flatpickers. Thank you. Btw, still working on Dan’s Lady’s Fancy.

Thanks so much for listening! I agree, Dan, TR, and Doc are also 3 of my favorites. Hard to beat those flatpicking innovators!

He talked more about Doc Watson, and Earl Scruggs than he did about Tony🤨

During one of Tony's festival workshops, Tony made it a point to distance himself from what Dan is doing on the guitar. I went to one of Crary's shoes, most of it consisted of him tuning a 12 string.

I met Dan Crary at a Blue Grass Festival and he was not a pleasant person. Maybe he wasn't feeling well or had things on his mind, but he was rude for no reason. I got rid of all my Dan Crary albums after that.

That doesn't surprise me. I've met a lot of players like him back in the day and you're right some were jerks. I also met Tony and he was nice.
