I loved the original Dan Dare - what did you think of it's sequel? 😇🕹👌 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= More from 1988: tinyurl.com/1988-C64-GAMES My Top Picks: tinyurl.com/CCGS-BEST-GAMES
I remember tinkering with all three Dan Dares on my C64 back in the days, for a very short time, but never got into any of them by heart. Never the less, they ALL looked very appealing and it seemed to me they were quite good games, if given a proper chance. What strikes me is deliberate decision to make them all different in style and gameplay. And that approach reminds me on ALIEN film franchise - 4 movies, each being done by different director, and each having very different vibe, sensibility and style, and emphasis on different ideas. Dan Dare series really follows that line of production policy, which perhaps should be praised more.
Very true, the ambitious nature to create each game with an individual style should probably be commended. However, saying that - none of the sequels beat the original 😇🕹️👌
I remember seeing the original Dan Dare in a magazine and thought it looked good. I ended up getting my hands on this one first and thought, "This doesn't look like what I saw in the magazine!" It was a fun little shoot 'em up / exploration game... but it didn't really hold my interest for as long as some other C64 games.
Not a patch on the original but still an ok little blaster which will give a challenge... but unfortunately, not a game with much longetivity due to the difficulty - which was only really made 'difficult' due to the darn timer in the game 😇🕹️👌
I remember playing this, must have been on some borrowed disk from a friend. I didn't understand much english at the time and this game made no sense on its own! Only thing I understood was this "fly around fast and shoot", but that didn't get me far.
I'm always incredibly impressed that good people like yourself could play these games without the knowledge of English and now you write it perfectly. Fly around and shoot fast is definitely the best approach still haha... yet even without the knowledge, its an impressive feat - I can only speak 1 language (sometimes very badly as it is!) so be proud 😇🕹️👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer It's all thanks to gaming, I was very keen to learn english in school just to be able to play games! I vividly remember playing Sid Meier's Pirates! on C64 with my older brothers and wishing I could understand everything. Maniac Mansion was also very good for learning words and I did play through a heap of point and click-adventure games growing up. I guess the lucky thing was that my mother noticed that I'm actually playing the games with a dictionary and learning, so she let me play maybe more than I should have :D
Colourful yet incredibly tough haha. Had some fun playing it again, but that time limit on the levels is a game breaker. Still, good blasting action for however long it lasts 😇🕹👌
It's tough to have to create a game that follows a very successful one without just making an exact copy of it with some tweaks. I'd say they did a decent job here.
Scandalous! Mind you... I got myself the Mega Drive around 1991, only because I really wanted to play Sonic The Hedgehog. But it turned out to be an awesome console 😇🕹️👌
Never played it, looks like an early attempt at a Metroid style game a couple of years before Metroid. I never liked Dan Dare 1 (Sorry Cheeky!) so had no incentive to hunt down or try the sequel, but I am betting I would have liked it better then the first. Time to give it a shot under VICE/Gamebase! Thanks as always for the review my man!
Give it a whirl but maybe switch off the time element as its pretty brutal! I'll be incredibly impressed if anyone can get through this game without the timer cheat 🤣🕹👌
