Daniel Davis was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1946. He was drafted into the Army in September 1967. He trained as a mortar crewman, and went to Vietnam in February 1968, just after the start of the Tet Offensive. He was assigned to C Troop, 3rd Squadron, 5th Armored Cavalry Regiment, which was part of the 9th Infantry Division. The division was based near Saigon, and he spent one night just after his arrival guarding the “Y Bridge” in Saigon. Right after that, his squadron was detached from the division and sent to the I Corps sector in the far north of South Vietnam, just below the DMZ. Once there, they supported different divisions in the area, both Marine and Army units, and moved back and forth between coastal areas and the hills and mountain valleys in the interior. He returned to the US in February 1969 and was discharged that August to return to school.
