I am a HUGE fan of these videos when you document methods & advice the Pro's give while doing work and adjusting different components, Even learning about how they clean various parts. I learned and absorbed a ton of good information with this one & the series you did with Kinkaid. Thank you Dan.
Sans the steel wool BS. NEVER use less noble metals on metals! Yo'll end up with ferris oxide EVERYWHERE, including putting RUST in the fingerboard wood. No machine shop on earth uses steel wool, because they understand chemistry and technique. This gut is like a painter, letting the car dry next to a train track.
@@craig.encinitas I find Mother's chrome polish, on a microfiber covered hard block, the best. Hard block keeps the lows from getting lower. Then, finish the frets, strings, AND fingerboard in pure silicon spray. Keeps the friction down, while sealing sweat out (especially the strings, makes them last so much longer). Haven't changed my frets in 17 years, on 7 guitars, after using this method, when previously I'd need it bad every 10 years. I play everyday, at least once. The mineral oil and steel wool BS is just tradition built on unquestioning ignorance.
I love these equipment type blog videos. I completely nerd out on these without having to turn down the TV at midnight in Singapore. Nice jazz box to tide you over until the Kinkade instrument makes an appearance (some doofus 😂) 👏 P.S. how good is Matt at Monty’s??? Awesome!
To say I am gobsmacked, stunned and amazed, by this young gentleman's talent, his mastery of so many skills. All of this video is perfection. He is a treasure. A master of his craft. This video will be watched many times, and shared with all my guitar buddies. Dan, yes please, we need more of these kinds of videos. 😊😊😊
Hands down to Matt!!! what a humble and unselfish person! he literally gave us all those tips and tricks, that even if you aren't going to do the work on your guitar, now you know how to ask your technician or luthier to do it or try it in your instrument!! Also LOVE!! the attention to detail in all the graphics in his products! hands down!! congrats on reviving that jazz box Dan!
Dan, I had an identical J6. Sunburst. I sold it to my cousin and regretted so much that I bought another some years later (natural, not sunburst). It’s a great guitar. It sounds like a dream (I swapped the neck PU for a Gibson PAF). The funny thing is that in the very beginning of the video I saw your guitar and thought “Wow! A J6. Wait. That seems a lower quality version” because the neck was looking like made of cheaper wood. 5 mins in the video I realized: gosh, actually the neck is covered by dust. That’s why he is looking weird. 🙂 Thanks for take us through this very nice journey. Excellent job!
Great topic! Jazzbox servicing has remained an underexplained area until this video and Matt has been extremely open about the tricks of his trade. Fretboard wax was cool. Enjoyed every second.
Sounds awesome Dan. Gorgeous guitar and great work by: Matt Gleeson. Loving this jazzy-side-of you. I also do my strat-claw like that = see You Tube video by: Carl Verheyen: Whammy Bar Setup Secrets. Between Matt and Jonny K - your guitars are in good hands.
27:20 - For an even deeper dive, look for Carl Verheyen tremolo setup videos. He goes so far as to setup up intervals and also references Mr Beck. Lovely episode - thanks Dan!
@@ThatPedalShow and what about a deep dive on jazz Amps? Can't imagine anyone doing it but you guys. Getting an Amp to sound good for jazz can be a lot harder than one thinks... I've been struggling for years! Cheers and thank you for the great video!
I truly loved watching this. I don't have the money for expensive guitars or guitar techs. So I buy cheaper electric guitars and set them up myself. Videos like this are so valuable for people like me. Thank you!
Mate, there are a lot of pearls of wisdom in this video. As someone who chooses to do all his own guitar work I am very happy to learn new tricks for setup stability. Thank you so much for sharing the journey and happy strumming.
I have really enjoyed watching this I have a Washburn it's a J7 big jazz box it has a bigsby on it It really looks like he's done an amazing job Thumbs up from Geelong Australia 🦘🇭🇲👍🇭🇲
It is so amazing to see a real artisan at work; someone who loves their craft and has a deep knowledge. I think the NHS should prescribe watching this for stress! So relaxing and interesting. Well done! Bravo!
This was absolutely riveting. Couldn't take my eyes off. Inspires a shout out to all the indispensable guitar techs out there. Mine is the reason I keep playing and feel inspired, knowing each guitar has been made special. If there's ever a problem playing, it's always operator error. We just spoke this morning. About a new guitar...
This was very cool to watch. I usually would only watch a few minutes when I see it almost an hour long but I was really engaged and stayed until the end. Loved it
I have a 1984 Epiphone Emperor in which I am getting ready to do the very same upgrades to so I am glad to have come across this video which will help me to do the job right!
wow that was the best most complete, useful , how to set up this style of guitar. Loved the way he didn't have to use fancy guages or tools. I'm going to rewire my japanese 70's pearl the same way. thanyou
I’m a bit of a Mod nerd and absolutely LOVE videos like this where the rough is just baking polished off the diamond. So great! Glad you love it! Cheers!
great video brother!!!!! I bought one today used washburn j 6 for only 80 euro used great condition...it comes next week i am so excited!!!!! Wonderful instrument!!!!!!!!!
Ah! I see Matt is from the Wolf School of guitar technicians. Looks stunning and great to witness the craft and style of guys like Matt. Makes me want to get more hands-on myself. (Hope that came out right) : ) Cool video Dan. Cheers!
Wow, that little reverse turn trick - to find the existing thread! Brilliant! And looking for the curve of the string, this is the kind of knowledge you can only get from experience, it's very generous of people to share it. It's already sounding beautiful in your paws Dan. Quoth the Raven "What, a, shiiiine"
I respect the spitfire hoody. He's a skater. Also george made my birthday really special. Got me some aged nickle pickups, with outstanding service. Long live montys!!!
Great stuff! This video scores high in educational value as well as in genuine "feel good" energy. There is something almost ASMR-like about instrument care done right. 😀
This proves the point... We all crave a vintage guitar with all original parts. However, the people we are trying to emulate were playing this stuff when it was BRAND NEW! Hendrix, Page, Beck et al were NOT playing 50/60 year old gear, their stuff was new.
I've been meaning to buy a '50s wiring loom from Monty's. I have Monty's PAFs, which I love to death, but they're soldered straight into my Gibson's PCB.
LES FINS DES JAMBES! SHANK TERMINI! ENDS-ALL / BE'S-ALL OF LEGS-ALL! If you'll pardon the American sports reference, you gents just keep hitting home run after grand slam home run. Love everything you're doing--ever, but especially lately. Really inspired work. Thanks, too, for bringing back the podcast. (AND for recc'ing The Truth About Vintage Amps. Fan-freaking-tastic.)
Bassist and orchestra teacher here (who apprenticed in a violin shop for a while). I sometimes use a little rosin on the feet of the bridge on a polished finish instrument.
Hands down, clearest explanation of guitar set-up, including wee pearls of wisdom. Great stuff Matt. Dan, you're a lucky man. Enjoy your new Jazzer! Cheers A
Another great vid - I love tinkering with guitars and watching a real pro do it is just as much fun. I knew the strat claw trick, and i have used a few similar cleaning and polishing methods - but checking the curve of the string is a new one to me, you learn something every day. With such dedication to his art, a set of Monty’s PAFs might be worth looking into at some point for me. The jazzbox sounds great Dan.
Nice guitar but I give the playing a 0/10, never played the 007 chord. All jokes aside that sounds killer now, can't wait to maybe hear it in a few more shows in the future!
As a testimony to the enduring legacy of Back to the Future, the video I watched before this one was a woodworker in the US and he had an “Elect Goldie Wilson as Mayor” sign on his wall. Now this one has the “OUTATIME” license plate. Cool.
Dan! Try a set of Thomastik-Infeld BeBop strings- "Jazz Round-Wound"! They're fantastic if you *might* consider flat-wounds, but still want the familiarity and brighter tone of round-wounds. The materials and size-ratio between their round (not hexagonal) core-wire and the round wrap-wire wound on them makes them a perfect middle between flat-wounds and round-wounds. Warm and smooth and clear; similar to DR Pure Blues, but with a little less upper-mids and treble bite. Great Jazz, R&B, uptown sound and feel. The same as George Benson's signature strings (he has both round-wound and flat-wound signature-sets).
@@ThatPedalShow I bet that you'll love them! I really like finding the right strings and gauges for a given guitar and its mission; I'll use different strings on various guitars. Right now I'm running T-I Swing Flatwound 13's on a Jazzbox, and DR Pure Blues on my Les Paul (11's) and Tele (10's).
Making an old guitar like that functional is great. It’s probably sat unloved in a case for a while and now it’s dazzling and ready to provide somebody with years of joy. Good on you!
