Dan Siegel: Helping a Shy Child be Brave 

Shyness is created by parents emotional neglect to the child. The parents don't sit and let the child talk. This makes the child feel inferior and scared to speak as the child feels inconsequential. The cure for shyness is easy. Sit patiently and listen to your child. Don't talk at your child. Ask your child a simple question and be quiet. After your child responds ask your child another simple question. If you do this enough you will draw the child out of their inferiority complex. The child will begin to feel important and worthy and confident. Most parents don't want this as it takes energy to raise a confident child. Most parents just want a child to shut up and stay out of the way and they say so using those exact words.

As the youngest of 5, my family would all hold hands and go in the ocean. But big waves. I often got pulled away and had to get to the surface on my own. I felt betrayed and ACTUALLY over my head. Just a bit angry about that.
