Yes, this is an old folksong, but Simon & Garfunkel made it really popular back in the 70's when I was young. Dan sings this beautifully!❤❤ Its hard to realize there are people who've not heard songs that were popular in my youth. Makes me feel old.

Scarborough Fair is a 45-day trade fair that took place every year in August. The song was probably written in the 16th or 17th century. It was once sung by Simon and Garfunkel, released in 1966. Dan's interpretation with the two and three-part vocals is fantastic. I love listening to his acoustic music. Thank you for your continued support and wonderful response to this epic cover by Dan. "Scarborough Fair" is a traditional English ballad. The song lists a number of impossible tasks given to a former lover who lives in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, Great Briton. The "Scarborough/Whittingham Fair" variant was most common in Yorkshire and Northumbria, where it was sung to various melodies, often using Dorian mode, with refrains resembling "parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme" and "Then she'll be a true love of mine. It appears in Traditional Tunes by Frank Kidson published in 1891,,,, This song blends 2 songs into 1....The Canticle is the back song..The lyrics of Scarborough Fair puts forward the concept of unrequited love. The yearning is felt throughout the song, creating a perfect medieval love story in the process. A young man delegates certain impossible tasks to his lover with the condition that she would have to finish those to be able to come back to him. Consequently, the lady also requests equally impossible things from the man, with the condition that she would complete her tasks when he would complete his. The popularization of Scarborough Fair today is due to rock & roll greats Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, who were introduced to it by Martin Cathy, a British singer. The song was then re-written with a song of theirs, ‘Canticle’ and its popularity rose due to its anti-war lyrics during the Vietnam war period. Added fame was brought by its presence in the Dustin Hoffman movie “The Graduate” in the year 1967, considered as one of the greatest films of all time. The tune is also audible in Simon & Garfunkel’s other compositions, such as "Mrs. Robinson".The tune and lyrics date back to the Middle Ages. The herbs were mentioned for their spiritual meaning in medieval lore. Parsley was thought to remove bitter emotions. Sage was a symbol of wisdom and healing. I remember singing this in our high school chorus. (a few years back 😉). I loved it back then and even more since Dan did it. I love that so much of Dan’s music makes me venture on to find out more about a song. Got this from Google so take it for what it’s worth! This is such a beautiful performance of a very old traditional English folksong, sung in Simon and Garfunkel's lovely arrangement. This is indeed an often overlooked side of Dan, and I love it. And I agree, the production is superb as always. Thanks for playing and appreciating all the detail involved!

Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme are traditional ingredients of a love poultice/sachet. Parsley for comfort, lust, and festivity. Sage for strength and wisdom. Rosemary for remembrance and love. Thyme for courage. So the combination would be for the courage to proclaim your love/lust and the strength and wisdom to carry out the tasks demanded by your love and to remember why you are doing this. And for remembering that love throughout the coming years. The song was a huge hit by Simon and Garfunkel in 1966. It is actually 2 songs interwoven: Scarborough Fair and Canticle ( a reworking of an anti-war song written by Paul Simon in 1963 - "The Side of a Hill"). The original folk song is just Dan 1 and Dan 2. It is, as explained, a man asking three impossible things of a former lover before he'll have her back. Dan 3 is singing Canticle which was a Simon and Garfunkel creation to use as counterpoint. The lyrics for Canticle were reworked from Simon's "Side of the Hill," an anti-war song, with Garfunkel working out the melody. The two sets of lyrics are unconnected so it is no surprise being a little lost in trying to make sense of them as a single piece. But it is wonderful listen. So successful and popular was Simon &Garfunkel's version that it is hard to hear Scarborough Fair without Canticle nowadays without feeling that something is missing.

The guitarist is Gabriel Belozi, who is the main guitarist (both electric and acoustic) in Dan's band (Fearless). In Fearless, Dan's brother Davi plays bass. Giovanni Rezende plays drums. They are all SUPERB at what they do. For these "Spyglass Inn" songs (all acoustic), Gabriel and Dan worked together to make the arrangements. I see that quite a few people have already provided EXCELLENT historical info regarding this song, itself (and others like it). Great work, ladies! You did a GREAT job describing it as "old," and "something that has been carried down through time." That's EXACTLY right! Well done! 😀 Yes..."parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme" have a LOT of different uses than just SEASONING food. As with many other leafy green herbs (that are used both fresh and dried) they are all medicinal, for one thing. Also, any such herb can also be used in perfumes and such (adding a feeling of familiarity to the more flowery aromas, sometimes). As for the instrument you were hearing...it's likely a (MIDI file ofa ) mandolin, or possibly a lute. Also, Gabriel could have been playing either one. I also hear bells of some type -- definitely could be a triangle, xylophone, or any number of bell-tone producing instruments, as in partially-filled crystal glasses (any type of glass will work, but crystal gives the BEST musical tones). On the other hand, all of that can be created by a hurdy gurdy. Of course, they can all be created totally digitally, as well. It doesn't matter. There are DEFINITELY bell tones throughout the song. 😀 One thing I always notice while watching this song (a lot) is that with the Dan on the left, with the light shining directly on his hair, more than anything else, you can easily see the actual, native curliness of his hair. He has to have monthly treatments to keep that built-in curliness tamed, and the long, smooth hair that we generally see on his head, in evidence. He says that if he didn't do that (and in his younger days, he did NOT do that), he would have the biggest, widest, most dense afro ever seen). 😅🤣 - - - - - - - - - - ...and there you have the TYPE of song that my little 3-girl-band sang, back in the 60s.
