Found Dan Buettner while looking for information on the Mediterranean diet. I live in beautiful Astoria Oregon. I would LOVE to see this city become a Blue Zone. We have so much going right. We have a river walk that follows the Columbia River the whole length of the city. We have wonderful hills to incorporate into our walks. Unfortunately, this is now a tourist town, which caters to the tourist. We have "brew pubs" popping up all over, whiskey bars, distilleries, AND seven, that's right seven pot shops, two major fast food restaurants, and several convenience stores that sell fried foods. We are doing so well here that they built a cancer center. All this in a city of around 10,000. Pretty sad indeed. Astoria Oregon is what's wrong with America. I love the work you guys are doing! I have tree of Dan's books, and I'm determined to create my own personal Blue Zone!
This was such fun and Rich Roll is every bit that amazing guy in real life as the one his projects in his podcast. I did four pieces on NBC TV after this and the response from Rich's podcast was much greater and more meaningful. Rich is fast becoming one of the most influential voices of our time. P.S. Sorry about my hair. It as a bad hair month for me...
DON’T APOLOGIZE FOR SOMETHING SO TRIVIAL DAN!!! What you are doing as part of your life’s mission here on Earth 🌎 is awe inspiring and educational!!! Thank you for informing all of us who are ready to listen...✨🙏💫
I am so impressed with all your work to give us an opportunity to become blue zone. Love that you worked with wonderful people in Naples and I believe South Florida would be an excellent demographic for blue zone implementation, particularly in the public and private school sector. Thank you and may you have continued success.
I'm liking the full video format of the podcast Rich. Keep at it and you'll find a new source of income just like Joe Rogan. Plus, you've got a better message. Go Rich Go!
Heartfelt healthy thoughts and experiences can push an inspiring narrative. Thank you for spending your life to help create positive change for your community and for us all!
I know this is old footage, but I just discovered Dan's mission and can't get enough of what he has to share. I just received the book that he is talking about and can't put it down. It's a beautiful book. I am starting a Blue Zone Journal on my 65th birthday 11/05. My plan is to document everything. Thank you, Dan!
I live in Santa Barbara born and raised. I live out of my car because the cost of rent and there are not very many studios or one-bedroom apartments. Not the happiest place at the moment but I’m grateful for what I got. I’m thinking about moving to a new state. Thank you for your discussions they are very inspiring.
This is a fantastic and inspiring conversation. I listened to this and the talk from 2015 this week and it has elevated my mood and my engagement with my friends and community. Thank you and keep it up, Rich. Love the friendship and rapport you and Dan have with each other.
Our brains are wired for pleasure ... I stick to things best if I can find a way to see/feel a result, even minuscule, early on my path to change. I laughed at Dan's point blank statement that we need to "limit our freedoms to do unhealthy shit." hahaha! So spot on! LOVE his vision! I have a very high happiness set point (always have). My husband is rather serious -- he says he's happy but just doesn't express it the way I do -- I tend to be pretty exuberant. We are blessed to live a simple life at the beach in a great community of people. I pick up trash when I walk on the beach --- it gives me purpose, has me engage with people, dogs, and wildlife, and I get to enjoy the beach and get my exercise. This daily practice hugely boosts my happiness. Really great interview--two very cool guys. Thank you both.
I remeber when my mom and dad both showed me individual blue zones articles. One from a magazine one from readers digest. The man from greece who healed his end stage lung cancer. Powerful!!
This was a wonderful discussion- could listen to both of you all day. It was through following Dan on Twitter that I found you Rich and while I may not be inducted into hipness, my discovery of the RRP (following your first interview with Dan) has been life changing. Thanks so much for all you do!
Wow. This kind of vision takes my breath away. This kind of action makes my heart sing. Thank you for bringing this work to my attention. I am inspired!
Great podcast and I'm loving the RU-vid videos. I'm a huge fan of the work Dan and the Blue Zone's team are doing. I even tried to get one started in metro-Jackson, Mississippi, but wasn't able to get it pulled together.
Was totally engaged in this podcast. One of the best ever. I don't know what the other listener was talking about. The visuals were great. Looking forward to listening/watching more podcasts.
I really enjoyed watching the dynamic between the two of you on screen! Makes the podcast experience so much more rich! I still went back to the podcast to hear your outro and announcements though!😄🙌🏻🌿
I bet more people listening to this podcast come up to him because we're already seeking what he's saying. Your fans are probably more engaging by nature, Rich. Glad to go back and listen to these people again and again.
Wonderful and inspiring interview Rich, many Mahalos! Just purchased Dan's Blue Zones of Happiness I don't see the CBT as impressive for anxiety as he does but I am looking forward to more in the book.
Great interview and very inspiring contents! Gives me hope again for my native country. Have spent most of my life overseas, largely in Germany. If you ever pass through Frankfurt would love to introduce you to our local (very extensive) hiking and biking paths. Keep up the good work! Tom
I live in anime and I know a bunch of artists because I grew up with a bunch of really cool people that knew how you paint and take photos. As a 27 year old that has not gone to college for photos I have learned to take great photos from the best people that I have known since I was born.
Only 17 minutes in - as a long time RRP subscriber - and already completely blown away by what Dan's been doing here in the US! Taking the data and what he's learned and proactively applying it to communities here...of course! Does he happen to need any help in Austin??? Please :)
Loved this podcast! Just an idea going off what I've gotten from this video and from how I feel about the other podcasts, I think that 50-60 min max for these videos would be perfect. As someone who stays busy and has a short attention span that's just how I feel. Thanks again for the great video!
It's amazing listening to what the likes of Costa Rica do at a government level down as well as from the bottom up to promote health. The problem is if an American politician proposed anything similar they be labeled a communist/far left etc
very interesting talk, especially about world happiness index. we spend a lot of time using socioeconomic status as a metric for happiness but it simply isn't the case.
As a long time fan (read finding ultra 3-4 years ago) and frequent listener of the podcast, I must give some friendly feedback on this channel :).... I'm not a troll and of course this is only my opinion, but I really enjoyed past episodes where we got to see more of Rich in his everyday life. I certainly don't expect full vlogs or anything too intrusive on his life, but getting a glimpse into his eating and training while also getting a little behind the scenes of his podcast and his guests, and balancing a busy schedule is more fun to watch, and learn from, than merely watching his podcast - something if I want to listen to I would listen to on the podcast channel. Like I said, friendly feedback here :) ....any of his content is generally top notch, I just think watching the podcast is almost moot and a waste of this platform. Like I said, I could be wrong here, and maybe this is just some experimentation but I wanted to share my opinion... Good luck going forward, much love from Canada, peace and plants 🌱
Keep up the full video podcast!!!! One minor suggestion. Tweak the angle of the camera a bit so we can see the full face of you and your guest. Keep em coming. You're videographer is paying off!!!!
You see a correlation in a place that takes care of their elders and happiness . Tax incentive if you live close to your elder relative . Health and health care , food and to be able to treat yourself once and awhile ... workfare .... Denmark everyone gets paid the same
The first step in getting anything done in US politics is taking money out of politics. No more corporate or bug money donations to politicians. So that and then government decisions are made for greater goodness and not in favour of small groups.
But the Blue Zones program is focused on a corporate strategy that offers no opportunity for grass roots to grow the program. So the program is really only for big corporations as part of insurance funding to make it work. The program can only work where major corporations dominate the job market with top down philosophy. In The Northeast, the program needs to let grassroots people get the momentum going and then they can engage the Executives. You need to let a club and team form first who can then influence the executives via financial cost reduction arguments. The program has a bad growth strategy.
Lot of anti-capitalist tones in this interview. But Sinapore's Lee Kuan Yew that Buettner mentions as a leader who instilled these positive values and drastically improved society was very much an anti-communist and has been labeled as an "authoritative capitalist"
Religions can provide plenty of happiness since they are quite similar to masturbation. Inconvenient truths often bring grief so most people prefer religious fantasies (about 80% of people are religious).
This is superb but why are these great implementations put into places like Redondo Beach Hermosa Beach Huntington Beach and not places like Boyle Heights, South Central......I know "follow the moneyx" but.....
Why didn’t he talk more about the Danes’ diet, which is heavy on meat and cheese? After all, they’re the happiest people in the world! Many of them still follow their traditional diet, which is so nourishing that they don’t crave a lot of junk food. I used to be a depressed, over-thinking vegetarian, so I did a lot of research about blue zones and found that pork is a key ancestral food in Sardinia, Costa Rica and Okinawa. Pork, which is the best source of many B vitamins and calming lysine and zinc, is also the most popular food in Denmark! I also found out that Northern Europeans have little ability to convert plant fats to brain fats DHA and arachidonic acid, so it’s critical for Northern Europeans to eat enough animal foods, as their ancestors have for thousands of years (following the lead of the Sardinians, etc., who eat their ancestral foods). These fats protect the brain myelin and the digestive system, thus preventing many “unhappy” problems, like aggression, OCD, narcissism, etc. The combination of adequate brain fat and high B vitamins from pork and fish calmed down the restlessness and sensitivity I felt as a vegetarian. Now that I follow my ancestral diet, I’m, simply, happy!
Genetic lottery? He’s got to be Kidding..He doesn’t get it. It’s not just the food that makes the people to live longer. There are people who are raw vegan or vegan who crock at 45 and where did they get buy their lottery from? From hell?
Ok but I had to eat in classrooms and I ate healthy that’s my choice and it shouldn’t be taken away because some kids indulge in unhealthy snacks cmon now
The fact that religious people are happy is no more pertinent to me than the fact that a drunk is more happy than a teetotaller. It’s interesting but that is all.
