I had a similar experience with an Ed Brown Kobra Carry. I bought it new from the company, but it wasn't reliable, and over time became less so. I sent it back, and he returned it stating that there was nothing wrong with it, but the reliability issue persisted (in fact, the extractor eventually broke). I replaced the extractor with a different name brand extractor (after tuning it), and the gun became 100% reliable. This was over twenty years ago, and it hasn't jammed once since.
Yeah, I've had similar experiences with EB in recent years. I love the design of a KC, but if a rep is going to gaslight me about an issue, I'm done with that company. Sold mine and went with a wilson combat. That one had issues too. But when I contacted them about it, they fixed the problem in under a week and charged me nothing. Quality control matters, but how you handle your screw ups is just as, if not more important.
Mr.Hickok45, the way you are able to send so much lead down range so quickly and so accurately -- almost nonchalantly -- is truly impressive. You and John keep up the great work.
I have a new DW Bruin 1911 in 10mm that had the same problem. Returned it to Dan Wesson and they said they fixed it...no change. Sent it back a second time and they replaced the entire pistol with a new one! New pistol works perfectly, with slide locking back both while firing and slowly racking slide back on empty magazine, as it should. Was frustrating for a pistol of this level of quality and was surprised to get an entirely new gun back, but glad it's fixed!
Your Dan Wesson is not the only one having problems of late. A friend's 10mm wouldn't eject. He sent it back to Dan Wesson. Round trip took 10 months and they didn't fix a thing.
Just want to say I had this issue .. maybe 30% of the time my slide was not locking on my 9mm guardian.. got this same Wilson combat (non bullet proof) slide lock and 100% fixed. So thank you for the video! Been a follower for 8 years now
I have a DW Specialist, same issue. Also 2 DW owners at my range, same issue. .. Unlike my Kimber or any other 1911 I've looked at DWs have a bridge over the rail gap the slide stop rides in. I broke out the micrometer and measured how far each of my mags (I have factory DW which are same as Sig, Kimbers, Wilsons, Chip McCormicks, ACTmags etc) push the slide stop up when empty (with slide and barrel off). I found that the bridged part of the frames rail stops the slide stop from fully raising with most of my mags. If I weren't going to trade my DW in I would dremmel that bridge until it no longer interferes. At the range I confirmed this with the other 2 DWs, all three worked with the same mags (Wilson and Kimbers) and didn't work with the rest. I've seen enough of your videos over the years to know you have other 1911s to compare yours too Mr Hickok so if you compare frame rails you'll see what I mean.
I have several 1911's.. none are super high end pistols.. and a couple are lowly.. springfields, colts, caspian, rock island etc.. all are fed however, with Wilson mags.. never have failures, except to hit what I aim at sometimes. Feed your pistols with consistent quality magazines.. and you shall be rewarded. Tight 1911s can be alittle problematic at times.. they were designed as a battlefield weapon, and tight wasnt in the blueprint.
this is an interesting note. I've generally preferred a Springfield myself. I wonder what a good custom pistol has to offer that would make it worth 3 or 4 times what an off the shelf Colt or Springfield offers. Fit & Finish ? accuracy ? Ol' Hick tells us "they're all more accurate than we are" and I always figured he had that right. My latest Springfield seems beyond reproach as far as fit and finish goes..... maybe Ol Hick will bring us some enlightenment :)
I love all your videos Hickok your never boring your videos are always very knowledgeable and very interesting to watch love watching you shot and talk
That gong, is like a church bell to my ears. The church of the unholy Hickock45 lol. Seriously, it's very soothing to me when I hear you hit the gong. Like total relaxation. I could fall asleep listening to a loop of gong hits.
I am sure Dan Wesson folks watch this channel. What do you have to say for yourself? You seem to have a known problem you’re not addressing. I can tell you this has cost you at least 4 guns being sold. I was about to order me and my three son-in-laws custom 1911’s for Christmas, after learning of your negligence to make right issues with your product, we bought from Wilson they have always went above and beyond to make any issues right. Thanks to Mr Hickok for saving me a $20k headache.
I've noticed that, I discovered Hickok back about 12 yrs ago while I was looking for educational vids for gun safety for grade school aged children. I think he was under a million at that time, not sure, but he impressed me as a good advocate for our sport and that is inspirational to me.
@@stevekehr6768 Exactly. While I would agree something at that price failing would be very disappointing, anything that involves humans is subject to mistakes. DW makes fantastic 1911's and I wish I had an all black Specialist myself.
I made the same mods to my dad's Wesson. And it worked great. My inexpensive Springfield, straight out of the box, has never had an issue. Over a thousand rounds, easily. It should bother them that their guns have to be modified to function properly.
Congrats on fixing your Guardian. I am disappointed Dan Wesson didn't fix it. My Guardian in 38 Super is still in the 'break-in' period, but so far 400 rounds fired flawlessly with DW and WC mags. Everyone should enjoy that experience.
You done good 🤘. Most people do not listen to what anybody else tells them about thier first firearm purchase. The Glock 23 is an excellent firearm, and will certainly serve you well.
@@dlife7427 yeah I was looking at Springfield, Kimber & actually the desert eagle 1911 (which I didn’t even realize they made one) but after a lot of research I feel very confident in going with the DW 👍
"Accurate magazine" LOL you are funny Hickok. Love you. Somehow I think your SDI training paid off. Thanks. You and John rock. And you sir, are an excellent marksman. As if you didn't know that already.
Saw your interview on TN Wildcat, nice show I enjoyed watching. Sorry I called the Gong - the Dong, that's what I thought it was called. After a lifetime of shooting and working in loud environments, my hearing sucks. Thanks again for all the shows.
I was experiencing slide lock problems on some of my 1911’s. Figured out I was allowing my weak hand thumb to engage the lock during recoil in such a way that prevented it from locking open. If I adjusted my grip slightly lower it seemed to fix the problem. For what it’s worth.
Thank you for sharing your live video I just bought me a Ruger 45 ACP p90 DC cop issue I love the gun very fun accurate dependable nothing wrong with it very accurate I love your videos thanks for sharing with me just wanted to let you know what I just bought I used to have one I miss my Ruger p90
Never ignore the mag release as a cause for this. A burr there or one that is a very tiny bit too long in the right place can contact the spring on the inside of some mags and cause intermittent failure to lock open. I have seen this on two different 1911 pistols. Two minutes with a fine stone fixed it.
Love my Dan Wesson Guardian. Already knew from the first time I bought a 1911 to get good mags. Had a failure to lock back on my factory mags. Hence why I bought Wilson Combat mags and no problems. If mags is all I have to worry about, then that’s a simple fix. It eats hollow points like a champ, accurate, extremely comfortable, and of course great trigger.
The two main reasons why 1911s malfunction: crappy magazines and crappy internal parts. Both are very prevalent in the marketplace unfortunately. Funny how Dan Wesson was unable to fix their own pistol and it required a third party component to do it.
I'm surprised DW didn't catch that either. They have first rate smiths working for them. DW uses tool steel parts, no mim crap in them. That Wilson part he used is a mim part.
I only own one 1911, but for a while, it's a series 80, bought it used back then, it was already "used" back then. Well over the years I fired the hell out of it, I never had an issue, not with weak handloads, neither with factory ammo, no malfunctions, and I fired it for long using only 2 mags! The original Colt mag is by now almost all in white marks from heavy use, still works flawlessly! So I am always surprised when people claim that 1911s frequently have issues, maybe I was just lucky with mine 👍
This may be an unpopular opinion but my personal favorite slide lock is the Smith & Wesson. It is a MIM part which many people do not like, but it fixed the issued that I was having with my Springfield. I recommended it to my dad and it fixed his issue also. The MIM part is more consistent than many of the machined slide locks and it was very inexpensive.
What the hell? I actually heard a miss! This is a historic event I'll tell my grandchildren about. Hickok missed one. There's something wrong with the universe.
my grandfather was a gunsmith El Dorado arms from yaphank New York and chimney Rock North Carolina. I've meet the owner of ruger multiple times when I was a kid didn't think anything of it but now I understand why he was here... Check out El Dorado arms
Last spring, my new Springfield 1911 (9mm) would not lock back consistently on the last round. After buying 6 additional mags (Mec Gar & Wilson) and changing Springfield mag springs out with Wilson, I was still experiencing the same issue. Put a slide lock from my S&W 1911 in and every mag worked. Springfield sent me a replacement slide lock and it works perfectly, too.
I love the double stack. I stepped away from the Kimber single. And I am open to others, as others are as well. On the gong with a pistol is always impressive.
I like Wilson Combat too, his mags helped out my Kimber Pro CDP II. I watch his you tube channel frequently too, not as much as hickok45 though... ; ) Glad it's working good for you now, sometimes the things we love take a little effort.
Always appreciate your content 💯 Magazines do play a big part & they’ve got to be accurate but I said it before & I will say it again, 👉🏻👉🏻you sir are an excellent shooter & a crack shot!!!!!👍🏻👍🏻keep up the great work
You won't go wrong with either, people have the occasional problem with Wilson combat as well it's just a fact of life with any type of machine. That's why testing is important before you trust your life to it regardless if it's a high end 1911 or a cheap micro 9.
Another great video, hickok. My Taurus 1911 does not care for the two aftermarket magazines I bought. Have to help them out of the magwell. Maybe look into Wilson mags...
I have a Baer that wouldn't drop the slide on a loaded magazine. The previous owner installed a Wilson shock-buff which limited the rearward travel just enough so the slide stop was not forced down by the ramp in the slide.
I had/have a Wilson extended slide lock that would only lock using Colt magazines. I put the original lock back in and it worked with everything. I have since bought several more magazines but have not tried the Wilson with them...need to get to the range with that old 45.
A precision machine ( pistol ) must deal with many variables and conditions. Temperature extremes and burning powder and bullet jacket metal galling ( microscopic) amongst these. Quality construction and superior materials held to exact tolerances. Finished to a brilliant luster and fitted with comfortable and controllable hand stocks. A pistol a shootist will be proud to own. Of course ammunition must be held to comparable values as well.
I had a similar problem with my Auto Ordnance 1911A1. It did not fail every time but I was not comfortable using it as a carry gun. By slide lock I assume you are referring to the slide "stop". In my days as a Small Arms Repairman (MOS 45B20) for the U.S.Army it was named a "slide stop". I have owned the Auto Ordinance for more than thirty years and despite being teased by my shooting companions for buying cheap junk it has proven to be a fun range pistol. Once the slide stop was replaced the lock back failures stopped.
