Join Brandon, Emeroy, and Lauren as they react to the video "Lisa Becoming Tough Mentor Lisa" and share their experiences as both dancers and directors. As professional dancers, they all know firsthand what it's like to train under strict mentors and the pressure to deliver a polished performance.
The trio digs deep into the challenges of being in Lisa's trainees' shoes, from the nerves of being called out individually to the exhaustion of drilling the choreography for hours. They also empathize with Lisa's perspective as a mentor and choreographer putting her name and reputation on the line.
Key discussion points include:
- Overcoming mental hurdles and fighting for your spot even when you feel like giving up
- The importance of not just doing your best, but doing what is required to be at a top professional level
- Pushing through brutally long rehearsal hours to clean and perfect the details
- The pressure choreographers face to deliver a flawless product that meets the artist's and director's visions
- Learning to get out of your head, have fun and connect with the audience even when you make mistakes
Brandon, Emeroy and Lauren open up about their own dance journeys and what it takes to survive and thrive in the industry. From 3am cleaning sessions to going straight from overnight rehearsals to day jobs, they share some of the unglamorous realities behind the scenes.
The group also touches on the differences between the perfectionism expected in the community dance world versus the commercial industry. They discuss how to adapt to each environment and find the right balance of discipline and nurturing when directing others.
This ended up being a much more personal and in-depth conversation than expected, but that's because the "Lisa Becoming Tough Mentor Lisa" video brought up so many relatable moments! Hopefully there are some valuable insights for fellow dancers, choreographers and anyone curious about the training process.
Let us know your thoughts and experiences in the comments! And be sure to like and subscribe for more reactions and dance discussions.

Lisa said in an interview she waited for so long but it’s worth it. Hardword and passion really will be paid off.

...the girl at 7:52 kept missing a beat. Lisa didn't tell her what was wrong, she wanted her to be able to see it herself, which is why she had her repeat the move over and over. She finally explained what she was doing wrong and she corrected it.

At the end of the day, these girls are not teenagers who know nothing and have no experience in the industry. They're all already trainees in big companies or performers who have been at it for a while. Many of them already have a following before joining. They're all just using this show to get popular in mainstream. Only a few of them have real passion for dancing, singing, and performing, and it shows. The girls are lovely and supportive of each other, that's why I enjoyed the show. And the way they fangirl over Lisa is cute.

24:24 Lisa meant “If they can do it; they can go home” as in they should keep practicing until they got it or they can’t go home and have to keep practicing.

One thing to keep in mind is that the video is a compilation of "strict moments". It can give the impression that Lisa was just coldly hammering them for their faults all the time. Actually, it's the opposite. MOST of the time she was smiling with them, praising them, cheering for them and often even hugging them to congratulate them when they did well. One short but fun instance that shows more of that side is the video with Yvonne Wang, where Yvonne was doing so badly forgetting the choreo that Lisa just got up herself, with a big smile, and started dancing with Yvonne to get her back into the choreo. Yvonne quickly got back on track in the dance. Lisa often would seem to tailor her approach to what she thought would work the best. The unsmiling girl ("NineOne") in this video had a background as a rapper who always presented with a serious, tough and cold demeanor. Lisa recognized that the kind of "loveliness" that this particular choreo needed was not something NineOne was used to. But there were several rounds of group performances up ahead in the show that would require her to do happy, smiling performances and she needed a wake-up call to realize how important the facial expressions are...so Lisa gave her that wake-up call. NineOne showed huge improvement in her expressions in subsequent performances and ended up being one of the top-10 in the show.

The hardest thing I had to learn while dancing was that criticism is never personal, or at least should never be personal 😅

It's also a show based on audience voting, she said before that they only have one chance to stand out when performing, so they need to make an impression, which naturally means they have to be near perfect

Honestly as a dancer myself part of a group, I learned to definitely not take criticism to heart. With criticism, it can drive you to improve yourself more to your satisfaction. That’s why I feel like as a dancers it’s good to also be surrounded by other fellow dancers to grow your skill. Lisa is definitely a good trainer as she wants everyone to do it perfect from the start to prevent loops of wrongs from happening. I DEFINITELY do not miss cleaning up choreo’s and also conditioning before hand 😭

for a better understanding of this series, there are over 100 girls from different Agencies in Asia showing their dance and singing skills. Lisa was only doing the dance portion. All the girls were given a letter grade after a quick dance performance and initial reaction, (A - F), And the girls in the initial clip made it to the A group initially. Lisa comment was, your skills should be better than you are showing as this is the A group. and there are many girls who are in the lower groups who want your spot. This is my interpretation and not Lisa actual words as she spoke in either Thai or Chinese. and after each performance, the girls get an updated letter grade. and many girls in the F range moved up quickly while some of the A group members went down. and finally, which was not in this clip, the numbers were dwindled down to the top 9 members which formed the first group to perform After looking at the Wiki page of the results, of the top 9 girls, 3 girls never made it to the A group at all. And 5 started in the A group but fell out. two never recovered, fell to F and stayed in F, and fell to D and stayed in D, while one Fell to F and climbed to C, while one fell to D climbed back to A and final slot was #20 and the last fell to C and then B group. she made the final 9. And Two girl stayed in the A group through all 3 phases, and they made the Final 9. so many girls, I can not list them all; lol So I liked what you were saying about sometimes dancers get into there head, and if you can not pull yourself out, you will not get the part, while others like you said, get mad at yourself and try harder, and in the end make it work. and it showed in the three girls mentioned above, with the different levels achieved

Yes, Lisa had a very tough trainer, even though she was already a very skilled dancer - these trainees know how good Lisa is, that she's been through exactly this process (while trying to also learn the Korean language), that she's strict but fair, and that she wants them to be the best they can be. When they do well, Lisa also makes sure she lets the trainees KNOW they did well, and they love and respect her for it! There's a clip of one of the Korean shows, where Lisa is shown two choreographies she's never seen before, just once, and she nailed them - the young woman is VERY impressive in SO many ways

It's interesting the emphasis you put on smiling, and I'd add eye contact. If you look at the early BLACKPINK M/Vs, Lisa is always smiling and looking at the camera - except when she make a point of looking away like in Boombayah - with the other girls making less eye contact and focusing on their dancing rather than the whole presentation. After the first couple, or three, they made a lot more effort on the facial side, as well as the dance.

12:15 Yes, I agree with the statement. Something tht peopledon't realize is that YOU HAVE TO DO WHAT'S BEST FOR THE BIG PICTURE. There's even a musical about it (Chorus line). Even if you are the main performer, the artist bla bla bla, the idea of a performance is to portray an image. Yes, there's people that stands out for their abilities on scene, there are lots of dancers fan cams, but something that people do no't realize is that, they do not stand out for being "better" than the artist but because they are doing their part to the best of their capabiities and, when you see the image as a whole, they are not doing something that they are not suposed to, they are just doing their job. What I'm trying to say is, do your best as a performer for the overall image and you'll get praised for the part that you took part of. For me, that's what professionalism is about.
