As for the opening scene, I’d read that more soldiers died in the civil war from infections than died in battle. As you could see, the medical conditions then were not ideal. Dunbar not only didn’t want to live as an amputee, he probably knew there was a significant chance that he wouldn’t live long past the surgery. He’d rather go out in a blaze of glory.
@okchristina
@okchristina 4 месяца назад
After the shock of those scenes settled a bit I was able to see that idea mostly. We take things for granted today such as illness and infection.

Hello I’m a new viewer to your channel this movie is based on my tribe the Lakota I am Oglala Lakota Sioux a couple of things one the bison is a very sacred animal to us we use everything on the bison and don’t waste anything and another the Lakota is pretty spot on aside a couple of mispronunciations but that is fine

I really love this movie! I saw it so many times when I was a kid. Still love it as an adult. May not be totally historically accurate but still makes me feel a great empathy and sadness for the Native Americans and the inevitable end of their way of life. A truly great epic in movie form.

I was impressed by your comments about the great John Barry, and how his music compliments the scenery and action. You might want to check out "Zulu," with one of Barry's first scores- in Africa, fittingly enough.- one of the best film scores ever. Not a bad flick, either.

Thank you. Historically Mr. Costner's movie is closer to reality than anything made by Mr. Mel Gibson. There are of course discrepancies, minor ones concerning the date, location, and construction of Fort Hays. It was not founded until '67, was located in Cheyenne territory, and featured a stone blockhouse as a central construction. In addition it was a centre for westward expansion, being serviced by the Kansas Pacific Railway, two associated towns, Rome and Hays City, not the frontier backwater depicted. The biggest problem that many have with the movie is that the Sioux-Pawnee conflict is shown solely from Lt. Dunbar's fictional eyes and fails to show that the more powerful Sioux outnumbered the four thousand strong Pawnee. The Pawnee who had been settled in the region since the early eighteen hundreds would often suffer attacks by the Sioux, like many of their neighbours, that could leave as many as a hundred and fifty Pawnee dead in one incident. Despite these discrepancies the movie is one of the better depictions of the time and place shown.
@okchristina
@okchristina 4 месяца назад
I can see how there would be so many details to get in that some would be left out. It's a shame, but it's reality. The size of the Sioux really seemed much smaller in the movie than you described. Thank YOU!

As a culture we have romanticized those who went out West, but the reality is that while there were a few adventurers who wanted to see the wilderness, the majority of whites who headed west after the civil war were the rejects of society. In the Army, heading out west was where they sent those who were one step ahead of a court martial or being thrown out of the service. For officers it was a dead end to a career. Living was tough and you were out of society's loop. The movie accurately captures this with the soldiers you see including those who took Costner prisoner and the officer who killed himself at the beginning. Also the trader who was killed. The movie captures that very well.

All in the tribe participated in the hunt. The women’s role in skinning and processing was significant. Another thing that the white man screwed up. The way that they made use of the entire animal was amazing. Such a respect for the animals at a spiritual level. A connection that many miss out on today , unfortunately

I think this isnt in this cut but its in the directors cut. The sioux in the movie are worried because there has been no sign of buffalo and they cant find the buffalo. Kicking bird and dunbar discuss this via stands with a fist. So they hold a ceremonial dance to help with that. Thats why dunbar goes charging off to tell them about the buffalo. Dunbar turning up with news of the buffalo in the middle of the ceremony is seen as a sign by the tribe and thats why he becomes a bit of a celebrity.

The Buffalo chase scene was filmed over the course of several days. Real animals were used for the first wide shots. One shot per day. The buffalo kills were achieved by tossing dummy buffalo out of the back of a pick up truck, just outside the frame.

*At **7:00** the officer's antics are bizarre at first glance, but they parallel Lt. Dunbar's. Each one had decided their purpose in this war and in their life had come to a dead end, therefore, suicide was their choice of exit. The officer at the outpost had been educated at a military college. Yet, when the entire country is engulfed in the Civil War, he is essentially discarded to an insignificant outpost, away from the war. Like graduating with a business degree and being assigned to an office mail room in Alaska. By contrast, Dunbar lucked into his suicide attempt turned promotion. With common despair but divergent outcomes, war amplifies the very thin line between the demented and the hero. The poignant contrast reiterated by the salute, "To your journey! To my journey!"*

They did have some similarities in their situations! Someone in the comments had also mentioned the idea of syphilis which may have also contributed to the very different outcomes.

Hi Christina! I just discovered your channel the other day, and I love your reactions! You have a new subscriber! 😁 You may have seen in the opening credits that this movie was made from a book, which I read last year .... or tried to. After about 80 pages, I gave up on it. Given the grand scope of the movie, I thought the book would be much more than it is. First of all, it's less than 300 pages, so it's not very detailed. Also, the writing is simple and amateurish. It was like reading a story written by a high school kid who wants to be a writer. Believe me, the movie is infinitely better. You can read the book if you like, but now that you've seen and love the movie, I think you would be very disappointed.

This one of a very few movies that depict my people as other than mindless savages. This movie shows the Lakota people as they truly were. We were not beggars and thieves, we were proud, strong people who valued family and friend above all. The whites unfortunately chose another route. The Natives that killed Timmons were Pawnee, they could be short tempered. I am Cheyenne and like our Lakota brother, we faced the same persecution as they. But, we were not savages. Another movie for you to watch ha to do with my people teh Cheyenne it called "the last of the dogmen". I think you like it.

28:30 The hunting party would kill a couple of bison that'll last them for a good while. The women that stayed at the camp are getting ready to skin the animals after the hunt. The group of men that also stayed behind with the women are guarding the camp if they get attacked by a raiding party from a different tribe.

Side note: the officer who sends Dunbar on his "knight's errand" and then blows his brains out is played by Maury Chaikin. He has a small role in "Wargames", with a young Matthew Broderick (Ferris Buhler). But the role he was ideal for was the title role in AMC's adaptation of the Nero Wolfe Mysteries. They can be found on Ytve.

@okchristina
@okchristina 4 месяца назад
Oooo neat. I'd love to be able to compare a language with native speakers. I moved a lot as a kid and developed a good ear for extreme accents in the US. Then being a classical musician I was required to take languages and also was able to sing in many different languages in choirs through the years. It's fascinating to me and a fun challenge to try to get the pronunciation correct!! Oh, and I always forget the music itself is a type of language. For western classical music notation it is universal! And not to mention all the musical terms and names. I just soak it all up :)

I love this movie but I wouldn't call it "historical", just more of a period piece. IRL near the end of the civil war, There was a lot of trade going on between Settlers and Native Americans, intermarriage was not uncommon and many Native Americans were actually converting to Christianity. Many tribes by that point had already replaced bows and arrows with guns because guns shortened the time it took for them to hunt enough food to survive the winters. But obviously still many of the Natives wound up losing their lands in the end and those that didn't want to convert or learn "Civilized Ways" were sometimes forced too. Fun fact: Some Tribes had purchased African Slaves from the South and were pretty much the last ones to free their Slaves after the Civil War.

Yeah..on uncle Sam's paper..fun fact huh ?
@creaturecaldwell9858
@creaturecaldwell9858 2 месяца назад
Well in the civil war times less trading and less intermarriage happened because it was more war to take land..look up the Minnesota Sioux war in 1862 ..not much trading..not much intermarriage..the most trade abd intermarriage ever was from in the southeast U.S for awhile until the removal act was put into place. It's the reason most people in tge U.S that have relatives from any tribe are always Cherokee.. or another southeastern tribe.. even northeast tribes like Mohawk had more intermarriage..few say they are Apache and Irish or whichever..more people just think they might have Cherokee family as well as actually having Cherokee family
@creaturecaldwell9858
@creaturecaldwell9858 2 месяца назад
There was little time for trading and intermarriage when the next new war against the next tribe was starting up again.. only time for fighting and surviving..the deadly weapons became more and more efficient..more killing in a quicker rate if time..until it was over
