Amir Khan's character forcing his daughters to wrestle rather than allowing them the choice to do so might seem like a bad thing when looking at it from a Western perspective. The time in which the movie is set and the culture at that time meant that Geeta and Babita were expected to live the life of a traditional Indian girl. Clean the house, learn how to cook and get married off to a guy from a 'nice' family when they're of age. What's more, is that the two girls understood this and were happy to settle for that life. By forcing his daughters to wrestle, they understood that they were capable of more than what society at the time thought. This is one of my Mum's favourite movies and when I asked her why, she told me that when she was around the same age as Geeta and Babita (in the early 80s), her older brother forced her to stop attending school and getting an education because he believed it was distracting her from her household duties. My Mum didn't fight back, despite wanting to continue school, because she agreed with him. She thought 'Well that's just the way things are'. After seeing this movie, she said she wished that she had someone like Mahavir Singh in her life so that she knew she was more than a bargaining tool for an arranged marriage.

No, the common marriage age isn't 13-14 , like the girl in this movie ..... but it happens in some rural places where people just want to get rid of their daughter by marrying them off Hence that marriage scene is very powerful.... He was a father who wanted his daughters to be successful in life

@@death_parade Well the movie is based on a real story where the girl getting married actually happens in real life. And its no shock child marriages still occur in rural places in india (including Haryana). Obviously child marriages are dishonorable, not the norm and would get you ostracisized, but so does child abortion, killings etc. that doesnt change the fact that it still happened and at a MAJOR rate. Instead of trying to counter the statement we should take charge of it just like other major crimes, WHICH has already happened and has considerably lowered the rate child marriages.

You guys need to realize that India is like an entire subcontinent full of different cultures and lifestyles. Think as if Europe was a single country with the different countries being different states. Move from one state to the other and you'll experience a completely new language, food, culture, lifestyle etc. This movie is based in the Haryana state of the 2000's. Haryana used to be a very strict patriarchal society with very little rights and regards for girls. That all started changing for the better when girls like Geeta and Babita Phogat started winning international medals and then the Olympics. This movie also played a huge part in the cultural shift towards women empowerment and wrestling in Haryana and adjoining regions.

I felt the same kind of wrong watching Queen's gambit tbh on Netflix. Parents having no clue the kid is doing drugs. The kids in school doing alcohol and drugs so casually. Girls eventually getting married with kids whilst being a drunk because they hate their life. The lack of guidance by the parents and involvement in the lives of children was just much too concerning. I mean, no offense to America, the show was awesome. But this is just culture differences and different parenting. Drugs, guns and stuff like that can get you years in prison and it's a huge huge gigantic deal. Parents in India are very involved with their children's lives and choices. Freedom and pursuing passion wasn't a luxury that they could afford in the times Geeta and Babita lived. I could personally never ever agree with American or western parenting. Same as you guys. It's just differences in mindsets.

Instead of trying to learn about his motivations and circumstances, the girl in white top decided to blame his parenting. This is what WHITE PRIVELEGE looks like. According to her, Aamir’s character should’ve left the girls to decide what they wanted, and when they eventually grow up to be less educated, get them married at an early age. That’s what he was fighting against! So next time you decide to watch an Indian movie(or any movie from a different culture), try being empathetic and understand the motivations, rather than looking at the world from your white privileged lens. Hugo is so refreshing, and I can see him trying to not judge and just take it all in!

Idk why anyone doesn't notices it but that point is itself raised in the movie where Mahavir's wife asks him the same ques. and he replies her to give him just one year and if he fails then he would quit training them. It should be noted that he wasn't imposing his dreams on them right from the very beginning but when he saw the potential then only he thought why can't they do it.

I strongly believe that this is one of the best indian movies ever, however this point has always irked me while watching the movie. Especially as someone who has "suffered" (might be a strong word) through the massive expectations of parents' dream burdening your own shoulders. @@yatharthrai4658I agree potential wasn't the right term here(Thanks to my poor vocabulary). It feels like he is superimposing because he is way too strict with the kids but in his POV he needs to be because he has very less time. Is Mahavir a flawed character ? Yes but I just feel like he is criticized way too much because people misses out this fact.

@@shivanshpandey2834 I love this movie, but "his" dreams are "his"dreams. It only works in the context of their location and culture where women are seen as nothing more than house workers. @@shivanshpandey2834 That's my problem with the movie. Mahavir isn't a flawed character. At least he isn't showed like one. No one who has seen the movie thought the he is a "grey" chr. I understand the message the movie is trying to portray, but maybe it hasn't aged well. There have been over 25 suicides in Kota this year. I think most of them weren't even able to survive 1 year before they broke. And I don't think someone who is preparing for such exams out of their own desire and not parent's pressure would take such a step.

As a Gen Z Canadian-born Indian women, the misogynistic sentiment that a woman’s purpose is to marry off and serve her husband is still very much alive in various South Asian cultures. I’ve had to fight against this my whole life, especially now as I am entering my mid-twenties. Any parent who goes against this sentiment and wants something different for their daughter is monumental. For this movie, the reality is that if their father didn’t push them towards wrestling, their fate would have been the same as the young girl who got married.

Totally agree 💯. Living in America , I have observed that people do not do enough research on how other cultures live and thrive upon. They assume , or maybe it's their second nature or it is in the back of their heads, that things are as hunky dory in the rest of the world as it is in America and that's how they fail to relate. Maybe this is why a lot of good Bollywood masterpieces went unnoticed at the Oscars or at a global platform because people failed to understand the underlying culture. Not everyone's standard of living is like that in the US. In most of the South East Asian countries , or maybe even just Asian countries , people live below the poverty belt, compared to the poverty that exists in the US. e.g. A homeless guy in America can still afford to eat food but a homeless guy in other countries cannot afford food for days. Now this guy in the middle ( don't know his name) seems to relate the way he identified the mother talking to the neighbor in ears just like it happens in Puerto Rico. So the bottom line is that the third world countries do not function like the way it is in America or the European countries and yes it is about survival . But you failing to understand how they function also reflects a colonizer's mentality that US or western countries still live upon.

27:49 is exact reason why today's world running around the acceptance of equality in everything (gender, class, status, religion, etc...) is just because at one point of time in this modern world, few business savy minded people saw a opportunity of making profit/gain of this (,i.e., taking advantage of the tangible and intangible resources like norms, sports, entertainment, talents, under dogs, beauties and bodies, etc...) and they went on channelising in the mask of liberal (but in fact they wanted is benefactor from it). Today's world is in this mindset of being liberal is not because one person or group of people were liberal, but because of few group of people/classes/community around the world who were a comercial minded intellectuals realised a opportunity to make profit.

A father always knows and wants the best for his children, so what is wrong with a father trying to push his daughters to do something out of the ordinary which they dont want to do but its for their own betterment? What the father is doing in the movie is out of the norm which is because of his intentions to make his daughters successful, independent, strong and achievers for their country. Harsh and challenging upbringings are mostly what makes successful people and hard workers. Most of us wouldnt have even gone to school at all if we were never pushed to go but thats not how life works, sometimes we need to be forced and guided to do the hard and unexplicable things because thats the ONLY way to success. Even just excluding that, olden times back in India, were very bad for women as they would have had to become housewives with no other option, so THEY revolutionised that mindset in india and because of that, people of our generation have freedom to what we want to be. Someone always had to have done something done out of the norm for it to become the norm.

Father is the best person we have in India. They sacrifice their needs to fulfill ours, they just want us to be successful. You guys can't understand the sacrifice of a father for his childs. We are successful due to their strictness and right decisions chosen by them for us.

23:53 Legal age for marriage in India is 21 for men and 18 for women. Please note the village scene in this movie is set in the 80s when the child marriage was common. Also, after 1823 the Britishers had changed the legal age for marriage from 21 to 14 for boys nd 12 for girls! Which was later modified after independence.

I thought I’ll just clear the age confusion…child marriage is illegal in India. However, teen marriage can go under the radar in some rural areas with a lack of access to education and work. The life expectancy and job quality are low, so young boys and girls are married off. They have no other option unless the poverty and education are transformed. Also, It’s not an old man and young girl, but rather between two teens. But in most states, the average marriage age would be around 23 yrs.

What do you think the choice of those girls would have been , having been brought up in an environment where girls are married off as teenagers ? They would never even dream of breaking off stereotypes unless the father didn’t show some high handedness . You will notice that is why he asked his wife time for a year. If the girls had displayed total lack of capability or interest he would have dropped the idea all together

When kids are small, they don't realize their potential. Parents do most of the time. The girl on the right is so proud after she became big, but doesn't want them to go through tough times. You aren't born with a choice, you need to earn it.

2:20 Aamir Khan is known for "breaking his own records". In each movie, he gives it his all to get the authentic look. He even pierced (I think ear/nose, but something) for a movie. I don't know much else :p 4:08 many ways to say "Bro", probably "yaar". But when you say "Bro look", you probably add "oi". "Oi yaar, dekh". "Bro" can be said using profanity, more so how a black person would use the N-word for his homie.

Good movie! I can see there are going to be some background discussions on this movie. lol! 25:40 The problem here is that your real world is very different from an Indian small rural village. Your moral perspective is only from your family and your experiences and your society and you have 0 clue about what happens in a rural village and how harsh it is. Now being a grown-up with that perspective, you take a moral stand that the father is wrong. I'm not saying you are wrong but just saying you know very little. It's like how you would compare a billion-dollar celebrity from your country and they speak about a common man issue and stupid solutions(They'll say like, save the planet and don't pollute... you common man. But that one millionaire would travel in a million-dollar plane to give that speech)as if they know and understand what that is. Sometimes, not most of the time, they may genuinely mean well for the welfare of the people but still, they would have no clue what really goes on in a common man's life. But hey, your perspective is your perspective and this is the reply I would say to you.

Parents play a vital role in maneuvering a child future. As a kid its difficult to make a choice on what we like and thats where parents step in. Also the film is set up back in 80s. Watching it as a Western perspective you got to see the asian parenting...yes it looks harsh but it turns a child into disciplined respectful and humble person.

25:33 He said that he'll try for only one year tho. Not all parents think like that. Most parents send kids to particular schools they like, take courses they like and some even force kids to take certain careers in the name of "good salary" and "family business", like you saw in 3 idiots movie. But here, he's just giving it a shot. If the girls do not show improvement, he's willing to quit. I mean...he is an experienced wrestler and he must've seen the potential, which came out to be true by the end of the movie....

But, it used to be done at THAT TIME! It was ILLEGAL at that tym too...Now it's a very rare case like maybe 5-7% cases like this..

25:45 Freedom without boundaries, is disastrous. Being kid you might not know what is right or wrong, you might not know do you have inherent talents that only certain people can notice. You might think it's oppression, but it will be you only who might be prosperous and healthy is you go through the pains it require. Humans are selfish by nature, and that has is required for survival, but greedy approach is not always the best approach. That's why I don't think what the lady in white thinks is right, I can understand where her feeling comes from is from motherly perspective or kindness and care, but kindness and care has to be regulated for your beloved to evolve, evolution is painful.
