So there's been some news updates for Danganronpa S! There was a new Famitsu interview on the 21st this month, and if you want more details, Weeby Newz has posted the full Q&A on her Tumblr: weebynewz.tumblr.com I'm going to note the few questions that I found interesting here: 1. The S officially stands for 'Special', because it's a 'Special Episode' to the series, much like UDG with it's 'Another Episode'. The S, however, it does have a secret double meaning, but it's unknown what that is yet. 2. It's been stated that they "hired the writers who did the Free Time Events and Night Events in V3 to make all brand new scenes." Based on the wording, we could take this statement as in them saying that *those happy scenes specifically* were wrote by the FTE writers, but other scenes, as in potential killing game related scenes, were not. Or we could take it that the entire game was written by them, and it's 100% happy. We don't know how much of this game is just fun happy interactions. It could really just be a small amount and there is more to the game, or that's all there is. So take that statement for what you will lol but I thought I'd give my comment on that. 3. This game "is a 'what if [Hope's Peak Academy] never had any killing games' alternate universe", however, the characters' backgrounds are specifically staying unchanged. Since the V3 characters are present, I think this actually answers a few questions about V3 surprisingly. But also that statement also confirms that this is a 'non-canon' game. Unless you take that statement as in they're in a VR simulation meant to think that the killing games never happened or something... I do think that's a stretch, but I mean that's kind of been the plot for the past few Danganronpa games loll 4. When asked about a 'new numbered game', the interviewer was given no comment on that and instead laughed. There are certain parts about this interview that seem to tear down the idea of this being something darker, but there are other parts that seem to highlight the idea. But I still think that we're still just as in the dark right now as we were back when we first got the trailer haha. I still think its a good 50/50 shot, but I'll be happy regardless of what they do. Since they avoided the sequel game question, I think getting a new Killing Game is still a possibility in the future regardless!
look the entire beginning of dr2 was convincing us that not only is this game totally fine and fun and nice but also nagito komaeda is totally your best buddy, spike chunsoft is the root cause of most of my trust issues

Yeahh its unclear what that could entail exactly. With the way the character system is designed, it might be hard to introduce costumes or skins to the characters, especially if they use gacha rules. The only two things that I can think of would be to purchase monocoins, or they'll have Danganronpa 3 Future characters available to purchase. tbh having some characters from the light novels and manga show up would be cool tool!
In defense for Doki Doki Literature, it has tags like "Psychological horror" and "horror" which is hella suspicious when I first came across it on Steam.
I can't imagine a new game with the same cast. It would be too unoriginal and predictable, since we already know everything about everyone. And a lot of character development would have to be undone in order to get a DR survivor to kill. Most of them resisted the temptation 5 times. And reusing the "virtual reality" twist for a killing game would also be cheap. Maybe the reason why they announced such an upbeat game was because Kodaka isn't working with them anymore? I also don't think Spike would go so much out of its way in order to troll us. Presenting the game as a happy, non canon spin-off when it's actually a killing game probably turned off some fans, while it may have attracted other people. They may miss part of their target audience by doing that. None of the other "lies" were that extreme. Regarding the plot, I think it will be something like a party where all the characters gather to celebrate the 10th anniversary, but then Monokuma betrays them and invades the island with his copies because "lol despair". Maybe there will be some sort of competition among the cast too, to see who gathers the most hope fragments or something. I also like the theory about everything being a fanfiction written by Yamada, which would explain why he is so prominent in decadence's cover.
Don't forget that lying and falsehoods were an important part of V3, to such a degree there is a popular fan theory that the entire ending itself was a lie (many say to re-play the prologue and compare it to what is described in the end and notice the discrepancies).
i've only joined the fandom within the last year or so but i didn't know about this, could you reply with a link to this trailer :0 it sounds pretty interesting but all the udg trailers i've seen were nothing like that (not to say you're wrong, i just havent seen it lol)
You're giving us too much hope... The explanations about the S are really interesting too. What is weird too is that, if it's just a simple board game, it should not take them too much time to release it. They are basically recycling a lot of pre-existing sprites and environments and they can even use some parts of the coding (?) from the V3 board game. I know that COVID happened and it must have taken a toll on them for the development process but it's still a bit weird that we don't have a release date yet for a game that is supposed to take place in summer. Danganronpa 2 came out in july in Japan and september in the West for instance. Something feels off, and for a game that is just a fleshed out version of a previous mini game it's weird that it have taken them so long to announce it. It has been 4 years since the release of Danganronpa V3 and I think that it's a great time to release a main game. Last year they had steady announcements for the 10th year anniversary but in the end it was really underwhelming, like something bigger was missing. I think that this game is bigger than what we expect. And it's really Kodaka-like to make it seems like it's just a fun and silly game on the Switch (who's known for its colorful and lighthearted games) when in reality it's a killing game in disguise. Kodaka seems to really respect his own franchise and treat it like every games has its own meaning and importance, so I doubt that he would want to make just a simple board game and treat as a standalone game
Oh my oh my you have forgotten something. The sole reason it will take long to come out. They are working on making the 1st 2nd and 3rd games switch friendly too.
@@heck6757 Most of the games are in a visual novel type of gameplay where you have a text and a sprite, I don't think that it was that much of a challenge for them especially after they ported the 3 games on mobiles. To compare, Genshin Impact is also taking a lot of time to be released but it's an open-world so it makes sense that on a small console like the Switch it would take a lot of time to port it. Even on PS4 the game is pretty laggy so it's really a challenge to be able to make the game on Switch be decently playable

Oh yeah definitely, Im actually replaying V3 right now for some theory crafting. Even when playing it for the first time, I think that it was obvious that most of what she was saying was a lie, and looking back, its easy to pick out what she was lying about... But the bigger question is what was the truth? Without giving anything away, I think I've come up with a pretty solid narrative as to what truly happened... But its kind of out there and I'm still working on it lol

@Fanjanhong * Except evidence exists to suggest that Tsumugi, like the others, was just a normal person, but like the others who were given new identitys (personalitys, ultimates, etc.) She was made into the "villain". If we don't know who did this to them all then clearly Tsumugi wasn't the enemy and another exists behind the events of V3. There can easily be another game as evidence exists that V3 may take place in the same time line as the previous games, we simply don't know.
Oof well as someone who just recently spent avout 80 hours replaying and analyzing V3 I do have to say there's definitely more going on than meets the eye. Also Kodaka literally said Tsumugi was lying so yeah.. It's not like we're conspiracy theorists or anything lol, it's been confirmed to be so. V3's themes still works even if Dr 1-3 aren't fiction. All of Danganronpa is fiction to us and it's definitely changed our lived regardless
@Fanjanhong * There are ways for subtle storytelling besides shoveling it down everyone's throats, and that is exactly what they did. No retcon has to happen because the pieces have been left in place to continue onwards. Remember those videos that show Shuichi, Kaede, and Kaito as they are "auditioning" for the show, all strangely in the same place? Ever noticed that in Tsumugi's ultimate lab the same stage the additions were filmed in is in the far back and that alone completely contradicts that their past selfs willingly wanted to be participants in the killing game, and contradictions many of the things Tsumugi stated. Do you remember the prolog where all the students, including Tsumugi, were apparently kidnapped and have absolutely no clue whats going on and are clearly completely different people from the individuals who we come to learn about later on. Do you remember Tsumugi claiming to have succeeded in becoming the ultimate copycat, contradicting that Junko isn't real and that the previous games were simply a tv show. The pieces are there for those who care enough to look, they placed them without needing to shove it all in our face. It isn't hard to imagine how we could have a sequel here, with what we know from V3 all of these dead people that are now back could easily be different people all together, given the memorys, ultimates, and appearance as those who are already dead. If Kaito is back, but it isn't really Kaito, would Maki hesitate to kill him? If Kaito knows he isn't really Kaito, would he be willing to kill this person Kaito supposedly loved to escape? My point is there is endless possibilities continuing V3 from the pieces left behind, there is a mastermind beyond Tsumugi that I'm extremely doubtful is appreciating of what traspired at the end of V3. The people making the show would have to go to the moon and back to bring back their beloved fans after the end of V3, and what better way then "bringing back" past fanfavorites and the V3 cast for a new killing game, with plenty of fan-service to bring in the fans back. Anyways beyond that and to your points on the ending to V3 being so Meta it's cringe, I'm sorry to inform you but the ending kinda went over you head because it isn't all that Meta as you believe. The ending shows that in the world of V3 the outside supposedly loves watching Danganronpa, that isn't at all referring to us, like some unfortunately falsely believed. Looking at it properly it's not meta at all, the cast of V3 has had their entire existence fabricated, beyond the blood going through there vains they are "fictional", not in a "HahA gAmE FicTiOnAl pLaYeR dUmB" sort of way, but there memorys have been replaced and rewritten, making there past false, therefore fictional. They as people in the world aren't fictional, just everything they remember is, they are still living breathing people. At the end of V3 we are left with endless questions and tons of proof hinting that Tsumugi was lying and she wasn't behind the events of V3, clearly she did the actions but if she like the others was messed with and made to fit the role of mastermind then clearly there is a bigger force at play, and I believe this game will be a continuation built from the pieces left over. I can think of so many interesting things that could transpire, maybe like I said above the dead characters aren't the same people but simply individuals who have had the memorys of past characters inserted, or maybe the game takes place in the NeoWorldProgram and the dead characters aren't even back at all, either way I don't think making a sequel will ruin the theme or be handled incompetently, I believe in the years since V3 they built beyond the ending a satisfying continuation working with the material laid out.

So, basically, the "S" would be for "Survivor," referring to the survivors of the series. Also, this probably doesn't mean anything, but I should throw this out; when I first saw that "S," I mistook it for a "5," in spite of the fact that there's no "4."

This is an interesting theory. Although I think we might be getting a separate Danganronpa 4. Ultra despair girls and V3 were developed along side each other and UDG was announced first and then V3. So maybe this is being announced first and Danganronpa 4 will be announced later, since it follows the same pattern of the spin off being announced first and then the main line game. Also if the final date for the anniversary is November 25th then there's plenty of time to announce Danganronpa 4. They'll probably do something big in that time since it is the 10th anniversary. 13:15 - To be honest I think Tsumugi lied to everyone, I've got my own theory about that and I made a video about that. The gist is that cospox is fake, Tsumugi has connections to Rantaro and Kaitos alive. The point is that I'm not sure if they'll bring V3's ending up again because I think it's supposed to be left ambiguous. But I really love this video, especially how you analysed the letter S and it's potential hidden meaning. Keep up the great work. I think your videos are super underrated.
@@TesKal41 Sorry for not seeing this until now. There's a lot of evidence but to simplify it. Tsumugi asked Kaede to turn around when she was changing. Tsumugi could have applied a fake rash as she was shown to instantly change her skin tone with makeup in the sixth trial. The audition tapes blanked out their names implying that their different people. However Shuichi, Kaede and Rantaro say their names in the prologue. Also Shuichi helps Kaede in the prologue and doesn't act psychopathic unlike the way he acts in the audition tape. Furthermore Tsumugi said they got excited to be in the killing game in the prologue, but this never happened when you replay the game. That's the basics of the theory.
Maybe the "s" stands for survivor cause of the survivors from each killing game and it will probably be them all in another killing game to determine the real survivors, I highly doubt it but there is a small chance my theory is correct due to blood and violence being in the includes of the game.
I feel like Danganronpa S is the Fnaf World of the Danganronpa series…its all fun but it probably will have some secrets for the next Killing game (if it does have that on release)

Right? I heard that Danganronpa 3 is heavily influenced by fan service, and I dread to even think what I'll have to endure when I start playing it right after finishing Danganronpa 2 because I thought the latter already was the bottom line of sheer fan service. I personally don't have a problem with a "nice happy friendly title" because I wish all characters well. I still deeply sympathise with them even though they were mostly annoying garbage to talk to in the second game since the writers focused on cringey jokes and exaggerations when they didn't know how to handle the dialogue. I can appreciate fan service when it's done right. But I despise fan service when it's obviously the writers being just lazy, yet sadly there are people defending it saying that "it's done for us the fans". Nope. It's done not because the developers care, but because they don't want to work hard on it anymore, and I sincerely believe that such franchise should be either handed to someone else with original ideas or simply finished. It's just painful to look at.
@@stripezebra5301 V3 is in a love hate relationship when it comes to my opinion on it Some stuff is cool but it feels like they took what westrain "fans" overobsessed over and tried to intentionally replicate it too hard The characters feel really bland compared to the 3 other games with only 4 of the characters in the story getting any real attention and even then they aren't that well written compared to the other charcaters Aswell as fanservice being everywhere the designs, some charcaters persionalities, a ton of scenes V3 is also the game in the series so far with the most differences in-between the EN and JP verson due to writting changes (also one charcater was basically completely rewritten for the en verson) trying to stay away from spoilers you should still play it and get your own opinion on the game!

V3 is my preferred game, not that it matters but it isn't really the shitshow a lot of people make it out to be. I can understand your love-hate relationship. The game having 4 characters who get "any real attention" goes for about every game, though. DR2 has around the same amount of fanservice (looking at mikan, teruteru and the beach dining place scene) as V3, way further if we don't count dialogue. Honestly. Miu is hilarious at times, not every time but occasionally. V3 is a controversial game. You either like it a lot or you don't.
idk I feel like 'summer' is a bit redundant. In the English, it's 'Danganronpa S[ummer]: Ultimate Summer Camp', that just feels like a bit much, and kind of same with the Japanese. It's 'Happy Danganronpa S[ummer]: SHSL Tropical Dice Camp'. With both 'tropical' and 'summer' it just feels like a bit much imo?

This is interesting although a killing game revolved around survivors would sound a little boring since there actions would be predictable also getting them to kill would be hard since most of the survivors have shown an unwillingness to kill so some crazy stuff is gonna need to happen to get the killing game rolling
I hope they have a blended cast since Makoto Hajime and shuichi all in one thats too much bland for one game like some characters being important might be why hifumi is so important on the box art :3
imagine hifumi's actually just writing a fanfic bahahahaha. what if the twist is that (following the v3 timeline) is that he wrote the entire dr series? that would be cool, and i think hifumi hiring someone like tsumugi would make sense since they have the same nerdy interests.
This is actually a really interesting theory! Another way I think a twist plot could work would be, instead of a killing game, the characters' realities seem to fall apart around them as they realise that they're all dead, and are now in some type of afterlife. We can assume that the Thh snd Sdr2 survivors were killed by the meteor apocalypse mentioned in V3, and the V3 survivors maybe didn't last long after escaping the uhh spaceship thing,, of course this is all assuming that Tsumugi lied about everything being fictional and the things they learned from the flashback lights were real. The main reason I think this is because of what you mentioned about the title meaning Shi/death, as it would fit if they really were all dead in reality,, that's just my take though :0 who knows, maybe we're just overthinking things-

One thing danganronpa has taught me is to never get my hopes up. Hoping for it being a killing game and it turning out not to be will crush my hopes and bring me despair. Maybe this is their plan after all.
I don’t think this theory would be true, but considering how the first udg trailer was set up and how v3 advertised kaede and rantaro, it wouldn’t be unheard of for spike chunsoft to do something like this also the blood and violence rating could be from something like Akane and Nekomaru fighting instead of any actual violence

What my prediction is is that S is not DR4. But it isn’t just a dumb side game either. My prediction is that it is a prequel/setup for DR4 and there will be a teaser at the end of the game.

@@TesKal41 They come back because DR2 was set in the virtual world and the all the dead students' bodies were still alive, but in comas (except Chiaki since she was dead before the events of DR2). I'm guessing with Kamukura's endless talent, Hajime woke them up one by one. There's even an OVA explaining this preceding Danganronpa 3 called 2.5. But yeah I agree, it would be more fitting if it was the surviving 5 since having the other 10 would make a game with that premise basically a sequel for DR2.
im way too gullible probably but im like 80% sure that dr s is not gonna be what it appears to be. i feel like its too simple of a concept for danganronpa, even as a spinoff. something's off abt it.
Ok, so here is my theory about the game. 1. There is a glitch in the Nagito part of the trailer 2. Why are the dead characters in UDG not there? 3. The reviews I think there is more proof that I missed, but here is my theory! Himiko turned out to have actual magic and revived all of the characters of the 3 main Danganronpa games, but did not do UDG because they’re they do not even know they exist. But, she also revived Junko and Mukuro and then they’ll make a new killing game! I feel like it’s like 30-40% possible
am i the only one that thinks there should be an all stars type of game? like maybe you could be kaede and there would be a killing game with the dead students from 1-V3 to resuscitate or something? it would be a fun idea and it would give the fan favorites that didnt get much character development a redemption
i hope we can have a better mastermind and a female protag in danganronpa s so we can have 18 characters in all and we can play as diffrent characters from danganronpa 1 and 2 and v3 all in one killing game or a diffrent killing game with diffrent executions and diffrent deaths.
Danganronpa S could be the 54th (or 55th in case S mean 5 and we have another past game between 53 and 55) killing game whit other people impersonating every characters because I think the final of V3 is very ambigues also I think the things from the trailer are from the daily life events of the chapters... I remembrer that the danganronpa devs talked about a big project, maybe DRS is the big project?? or the big project is just the porting of the dr games on switch. Btw in europe the ratigs are Pegi 16 (+16) for DR1, 2 and V3 but DRS is pegi 18 (+18); maybe is pegi 18 just for the big amount fanservice but idk
Not sure if I expect them to go the full "stealth viral game" route on this one just because Danganronpa doesn't quite have the same pull as stuff like FNAF, but it would be neat if this at least tied into the future of the franchise somehow. I do personally like the idea of the next game being a direct sequel to V3 that builds off of some of that game's plot twists like 1 did with 2, and an "All-Star" Danganronpa game could arguably fit in with that concept, both with established characters and ones that are new to the audience.

I dont think it's quite a killing game, but I do belive the game isn't as happy as it appears. Maybe it's like fire emblem where when someone dies, they're gone for good, but instead it's a bloody execution
Also I doubt the whole "shi" thing. I takes a little bit more to explain to an English speaker than a Japanese speaker, whereas V3 made sense for both. If anything it's probably an shortening of an English word, since English is still prominent in Japan.
A bit doubtful that DR:S will end up being more than the board game, but some pals and I have been lightly speculating that it will be a lead up to a new killing game title if not an Explicit New DR title. Here's hoping for new titles from Spike in the future, not that we shouldn't appreciate the new content we're getting with S regardless of course. New Sprites go brr

After I finished watching a V3 let’s play, I actually came up with a similar fanfic idea where all 15 survivors of the previous games were put in a death game together. And if this is the direction Danganronpa S decides to go plotwise, I think the next the next question to ask is,” Who is the protagonist?” I doubt they’d reuse an old protag but I also doubt they’d create a whole new one for a game full of survivors. I think I know the answer to this, it’s Kaede. I don’t think it would be really Kaede, likely just an AI or her twin? (Didn’t Tsumugi say she had a twin?) I think Kaede would be only the character who fits the two categories I mentioned. She’s not a new character, but she’s also not a protagonist. She lies in the beginning of V3 telling everyone she is. This is really just a theory. A fun idea.
TBH. For me it can go both ways. I´ll be happy if it´s just a fun summer time! Gives me reasons to know a lot more about the characters I already like. But if it turns out to be another killing game I won´t be mad. I´m in that weird limbo where I can expect almost anything at this point
Crazy wild theory with nothing to base this off of. But I like to coming up with creative ideas so I figured I’d let my thoughts be heard. What if this is the timeline where Rantaro actually is in a secret killing game and this is how he survived the last game he was talking about. Making this a prequel with familiar characters rather than a New game. We already know memory can be erased so for all we know characters could’ve possibly met each other before but didn’t realize it.
I figured it'd be a survival game. Like, having enemies you need to attack, and characters could possibly die, if they take too much damage, run out of necessities, or have their morale run low.

My biggest question then, if it were to be this killing game you describe, is how would it work if we were switching between many characters throughout the board game segment? Which character would we end up actually playing as in the actual killing game part? Would it just be Makoto, Hajime, or Shuichi or someone new entirely?
Very interesting analysis of the title, and to add to that, remember when Spike Chunsoft was livestreaming with Megumi and some of the devs to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Danganronpa and they decided to name it *Danganronpa TV*, with the TV looking really close to the roman numeral IV? Okay I don’t think that Danganronpa S is going to be actually a secret killing game and is actually a board game that gives us RPG fights and character interactions. *Although* I do think there could be hints at either V3’s hidden secrets(what are lies and what is the truth)or maybe a sequel(though I feel like a sequel to Danganronpa wouldn’t be a killing game and more of either Despair girls 2 or focus more on mysteries of killing games rather than being in one).

There’s an issue with your theory on “Their memories manifested into the students who died to be alive again.” The victims of the Hope’s Peak Killing School Life couldn’t be remembered due to the survivors still not getting their memories back, they wouldn’t remember enough about them to do what happened to Chiaki.
So I'm from a pretty niche theorycrafting corner of the fandom; not sure my theory friend is gonna appreciate the attention so no link unfortunately. But since this announcement I've been waiting for Danganronpa V2, with Rantaro and Tsumugi as the protagonists. Because I'm certain that Tsumugi wasn't just lying, but wasn't even linked to the true mastermind.
late comment, but to lend extra credence to this theory, a few months ago, twitch had to ban danganronpa v3 from being streamed at the request of the publishers. i thought it was weird, since the games been out for so long, and now it makes sense. although, it could just be to save newcomers to the series to experience the game themselves, since its on switch, and danganronpa has never been on a nintendo system before.
I've always found it odd that people make the distinction between the 'fictional world' and the 'real world'. As far as I'm concerned, they're one and the same. Idk why but I just felt the need to comment that

Hm, I suppose, but in that case it's physically different world, but in this it's just a school. idk I just think that when people separate the fictional and real worlds in V3, things get a bit messy and it's hard to see what truly happened. I hope it doesn't feel like I'm attacking you and your opinion at all oof idk
My wild guesses on why the age rating is like that: 1) The people at the ESRB just assumed that Danganronpa S deserves the same age rating as the rest of the series. 2) They were worried that giving the lighthearted spin-off of a game series that’s violent would attract the wrong crowd. Or 3) The RPG combat and Teruteru’s bloody nose sprites were somehow enough to give the game a M rating.
I'd like to point out that all promotional material when V3 was first released was heavily implying Kaede and Rantaro were going to be more relevant than they were, so it's not unheard of for Spike Chunsoft to purposefully mislead people with a happy, slice of life themed trailer.
I really like your passion and ideas for this. However, one thing that Danganronpa does really well is subverting expectations. Thus, using the same big reveals do not make sense, at least from my perspective. There are definitely some different ideas that I can imagine provide something different, so it's not like they are running out of ideas. The only way I can see what you said being true is if (1) this is just for fun/passion project that is just explained by an AU or (2) they are trying to tie in everything together (again), where (2) doesn't make as much sense since they already tried to do that.
Spoiler of V3 I feel if the old cast came back,including udg,Makoto gonna die for the fact he is the first protagonist ,the ultimate hope ,and maybe they can try make Kaede happen again using Makoto this time but with a key difference Makoto is victim with one of the other two protagonist's been the killing.
