definitely gonna show this to my gf. we use towels and old clothes for our rats bedding. we throw them away once they get too many holes because we're afraid they'll get their heads stuck. never even thought of their lil feetsies, toes and tails getting caught. :(

What do you think about fleece on top of towels? I heard that fleece doesn't absorb urine that well, so it's good to have a base layer below it to prevent very bad smells within a day or 2. Or do you have a better recommendation?

Unfortunately pinky has passed away since then but after telling me to stop using the peroxide and removing the string, he lived another good year or so with the antibacterial washes and antibiotics. he was very old anyways ( he passed at 3.2 years old) . never used a towel since, fleece is the sure and safe way to go.

I have a question for anyone that can answer. I used to have rats, and I loved them to death. My only problem was that they would climb the bars of the critter nation cage and pee EVERYWHERE. My carpet was saturated and my walls were covered. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd rather have prevention than doing cleanup.
@rennaysrats5744

Wow, my girls don't do that (yet). They pee all over me and I swear they wait to go until they're on me but, that's a whole other thing lol. I have a CN as well. I had them chew up my drapes so now I know to keep everything away from the cage. I keep mine lined with fabric and wash it all twice a week or it smells. I've heard they like to pee on rocks so you could try that. Another thing I might suggest is putting something absorbent around the cage that you can wash, and wipe down the walls and bars daily with baby wipes.

I use paper bedding from the pet store. I was using the basic pine, but my baby got a head tilt and we took him to the vet and he's on antibiotics now, but after some reading I found out the saw dust from the pine bedding can increase the risk for the myoplasma infection. But I'm wondering if the paper/cloth bedding is also bad? Should I switch to fleece? Thank you so much for your videos, I've just discovered them because I have to clip crookeds nails and your videos are very informative!

Im sorry to ask a question here but my phone wont let me message you on facebook. I was given this bag of smaller sized pastic balls with my rats when i got them, they are a small size of what you would usually find in a ball pit and im a bit worried about using them however they only seem to rip them apart and not eat them. I was wondering if this was ok or if there is something you could suggest as my one rat isnt very active but when she see's these little plastic balls she goes crazy.

If they're not consuming them it's probably fine. Maybe try only giving her a couple when you can check on her often, or just play with them during out of cage time? My rats have chewed lots of stuff they shouldn't have and they're fine, just try to keep an eye out.

The trouble I found with fleece is that it doesn't absorb pee. Towels absorb whereas with fleece it just sits in the top. I read that it's good to line the fleece underneath with toweling for this reason, would you agree? x

That's what I put lol- line the fleece with towels underneath. So are we saying fleece on its own is the way forward or line with towels?
@ratgirl44
@ratgirl44 7 лет назад
+Lucy Dawn when I first got rats I put towels underneath, but mine chewed right through. They would end up chewing the fleece and the towels. So I stopped using then towels all together and deleted any video where I mentioned it. I mean if your rats don't chew through I'm sure it's fine
@lucydawn3475
@lucydawn3475 7 лет назад
RatGirl44 do you find that fleece is good to use on its own? I guess just a matter of wiping under the liners regularly between washes? x
@ratgirl44
@ratgirl44 7 лет назад
+Lucy Dawn I find that it absorbs better after it's been washed a few times. It wicks the pee right up. You can double up he fleece. I do that when they chew a bunch of holes 😊

Hi! I love your channel and follow your advice religiously. I love all 4 of my girls, but I'm having LOTS of trouble with one of my newest. The breeder I got her from said she is an absolute sweetheart and loves attention, but since she has moved in with me, she is so skittish and runs away at any sound or movement I make. She doesn't show any affection and I'm afraid that my effort is steessing her out. Do you have an email or a webpage where I can ask you this with a little more detail? Any advice would be great, Thank you💕

The dangers of towels seemed so hypothetical until you showed the photos of that rat's tail. Thank you for that or I am not sure I would have taken you seriously. I haven't bought my pet rats yet. I probably will in a month or two. Are there any other fabrics besides fleece one can use?
@sazbear3913
@sazbear3913 7 лет назад
Old clothes scraps are great, if you're a sewer then you can make hammocks etc out of loads of old clothes, trouser legs are easy tunnels, if not just screw it up to put in their houses or beds etc. I think for actual floor covers fleece is best just because it's so absorbent. Don't buy it from a fabric store tho, buy those huge dog blankets that are really cheap because they come in loads of nice colours and they're not a rip off.

Rats only get annoyed and chew up stuff when they are ignored and left to their devices. I use old cloths and towels as bedding and have been for several years. I take my rats out for 3 hours once a day. First the boys then the girls for 3. They don't chew on anything.

Not sure if you need help still, but I'm an ethical rat breeder for primarily reptile food, but other animals, too, along with being a pet rat owner. For a while, I used anything from paper towels/napkins and- very rarely, but I did- simply nothing in some cases (depending on ages of the rats, like newborns and moms I didn't use anything out of fear). The most recent is paper-based bedding and paper-based litter from PetCo (I live in America) called "So Phresh". It's nice and lasts a while, but can get expensive over time.
