Am I the only one thinking: "Wait, are you planning on setting off a huge blaze of fire right next to that canister of pressurised highly flammable gas?"
@jaykoerner
@jaykoerner 7 лет назад
yeah, they should have cut it off, maybe they did in between the cut scenes? but before the water was put in the fire wasn't that dangerous they had time to cut the gas off.
@jaykoerner
@jaykoerner 7 лет назад
oh look at the cut before they put the water in the oil, the tank is gone. yeah they removed it in a cut, wish they had kept shots like that in, mythbusters always did, i fjnd that it's more realistic, anyhow whats with the lack of communication in how to actually put out a grease fire? all they had to say is to cover it and if not a option use a dry powder such an flour to smother any grease left on counter tops and the stove

Flour is also pretty explosive in a critical air/powder mixture. Flour mill and saw mill explosions are caused by this exact thing and isn't entirely different to the aerosolised oil being forced out by the steam.

This happened with a cook way back when I worked at KFC. He turned the fryers up too high, it caught fire, and he threw a bucket full of water in it. It caught the back wall on fire and severely burned him. The foam nozzles kicked in and doused him and the wall out thankfully. That is probably the craziest work day I've ever had.

if its an oil fire in a pot, turn the heat source off and cover the pot with a metal or glass lid or sheet. if its oil spill that's caught fire smother it with salt or baking soda or any other non flammable powder. or as a last resort, spray the fire with a Class B dry chemical fire extinguisher. never try to extinguish an oil fire with water.

My mother did this once when I was 9. I was doing homework in the kitchen and she was cooking some oil in a pot, and not a lot of oil mind you. She thought it was taking long to heat up so she decided to do laundry in the meantime. After some time (I can't remember how long) I looked up and saw the fire. I called out for her. She ran into the kitchen and took the fire out back. She then threw water on it. There was an explosion and the pot was broken. That is a fun memory.

All that with less than half a glass of water. See 1:18 during the water spill. It looks like a majority of the water misses the pot, but there is a little bit that bounces back out of the pan as a result of the backwards motion of the initial jolt. Pretty Cool.

I was deep frying hotdogs and left to let the grease heat up. After some time had passed my dog was barking. I got up and when I opened up the door, my room filled up with smoke. It was so thick I couldn't see the front door. I put my hand on the wall and followed it to the kitchen. I turned the corner and saw the pot my hotdogs was in had a pillar of fire shooting to the ceiling. I immediately went to the sink, but quickly realized water was not the answer. So I grabbed the pot handle and threw the pot (fire and all) out the door. I then called the fire department who came within 6 minutes and put out a small fire in the attic. I had 2nd degree burns to my left hand, it took 2 months to heal. Lesson learned, NEVER leave food unattended for any length of time. Also R.I.P. Molly, she saved my life that day.

When I was a teenager, I was heating oil in the pan in the morning and wasn't paying attention and it starting flaming. So i decided to take the saucepan, and put it in the sink and turned on the tap.... Well, the next thing I did was run to my mum's bedroom and told her the house was on fire. She was like groggy and confused and I just kept trying to yell at her that the house is on fire. At this point I thought the whole kitchen must be ablaze by now. Anyway, she uhhhh didn't seem phased and slowly walked to the kitchen and saw there was nothing happening. And went back to bed. I have no idea what happened but it seems everything got resolved. 😕 I thanked God and decided to eat some cereal for breakfast. I guess since I left the tap running, it eventually got extinguished???

So why does this happen
@Ravaxr
@Ravaxr 3 месяца назад
Oil has 3 properties that can make it really dangerous in a kitchen: It is flammable, has lower density than water, and it can be heated much hotter than water boils. If you heat oil to the point of catching fire, it is typically upwards of 400 degrees F. If you put water on it, that water sinks through the oil to the bottom, almost instantly turning into steam. Every cubic centimeter of water turns into 1600 cubic centimeters of steam at atmospheric pressure, so it essentially explodes under the oil. That atomizes the oil, exposing it to way more oxygen, which allows it to burn much more efficiently, creating a fireball. So how do you actually put it out? Fire needs 3 things: Fuel, heat, and oxygen. Water is meant to reduce heat, but it won't work here, and the fire is self-sustaining so turning off the burner won't immediately stop it. We already have the fuel from the oil. So we can deprive the fire of oxygen. Whenever you are cooking with oil, have a tight fitting lid nearby. If it catches fire, put the lid on and press down to seal it, turn off the burner. Let the whole thing cool off where it sits. Alternatively, a sheet pan can work as a lid, or a damp towel. The towel retains a small amount of water that helps seal and keep the towel itself from catching fire, and the fabric smothers the fire. But a tight fitting lid is best.

@jasondessing3508
@jasondessing3508 7 лет назад
If the fire is limited to the range/stove, throw a blanket or a comforter over the fire, then douse the blanket with water. Open flame can't burn without oxygen and the blanket will deprive the fire of nearly all of the oxygen it needs to keep burning. But there's still enough heat to set the blanket on fire, therefore: Soak the blanket with water.
