I just dealt with a grease fire yesterday and ended up with 2nd degree burns down my leg. didn't have anything to put it out with and I live in an apartment building so I picked the pan up and walked it out the door. once I got it outside is where it sloshed and went down my leg. sucks but it's worth it compared to 8 families losing everything.

Thanks for sharing your experience. We usually don't cook with oil, but after reading your comment, I put something by our range to put fires out with. I hope your burns heal quickly.

You could've used your shower towel. I know at the moment its hard to think straight and people usually panic but this happened to me today and thankfully there was a dish towel in the kitchen. After i started to think what else I could've possibly used if that had not been there and then I thought about my shower towel.

So American schools don't teach this to kids? I learned this before I could read, but that's probably because I live in Belgium and we deep-fry tons of fries and every household has a fryer so chances of a grease fire a much higher.

I live in the usa and I am in my thirties and I just found out about this that you shouldn't try to put out a cooking fire with water. Either something is wrong with me, or something is wrong with my society and my education if I didn't learn this until now. Endless TV and movies, endless talking and chit chat, and no where along the way did I pick up the info that putting water on a grease fire is a horrible idea. Amazing. If I had ever saw a grease fire in a kitchen the first thing I would have done would be to get a lot of water and throw it on the fire. But that can cause a huge fireball? Absolutely incredible that I'm just finding out about this now.

Im 15 years old today I was using a frying pan to make fried food and it caught on fire because im stupid and put the fire on High and the grease caught on fire and i panicked and poured a shit ton of water on it at first it rose very high but luckly after like 5 times i extinguished it, mainly because there was not as much oil but now i know better to never ever do that again this was one of the most horrifying experiences and i believe that this is something kids should know at a young age because i never knew until i was 15. i thought i was going to die and lose everything and burn down my house while my family was away. Because every child is taught to extinguish fire with water. that water can overpower fire. i mean shit, i learned that from pokemon

I only knew about grease fires a few years ago. While I was taught about fire safety in school, it was just the basics that involved: House fires from items, Forest fires from camps, Don't touch candles ... etc. We were 'never' taught about the reaction of cooking grease and flames. And since we are ingrained with "water stops fire"; it is the first thing panicking people jump to. It's not stupidity it is simply a lack of knowledge.

Omg! Freaked the hell out a couple minutes ago! Was making bacon and it was on medium heat the oil or grease of the bacpn started jumping and I was gonna put the pan away because it kept spilling and holy crap! Saw the stove on that center where the pan was caught on fire I got very scared and didn't know what to do I thought of putting a dry thick cabinet cloth cleaner but immediately turned off the heat and waited thought of water bit something told me to wait so I listened to my instincts for once! And thank you Lord it went down on it's own but I will totally be scared to male bacon again hahah or taking precaution on buying a fire extinguisher for emergency purposes

I just had a grease fire this morning (thanksgiving day) I panicked for several seconds but I knew not to use water and grabbed the flour to put out the fire. It worked but because I panicked for several seconds the flames reached the exhaust cover on top of the stove and burned through up through the cabinet above my stove. Not only that it caused an electrical problem where my outlets in my kitchen no longer work and now my refrigerator is off because the outlet that’s it’s plugged into doesn’t work. Worst Thanksgiving for me so far. Oh and I purchased a 6 lbs of prime rib to make for thanksgiving and now I had to give it away because my refrigerator is unusable. 😫😫

I work for a company that cleans the Behavioral Health Resources housing, and there was a cooking oil fire at one of them last week. How it happened was a resident put a pot of oil on the stove in the commons to heat it up and completely forgot about it. The oil eventually boiled over, hit the hot burner, shot up to the cabinets next to it, and, the building was heavily damaged. Thankfully, the resident got out safely. This incident could have turned out much worse than it did, and it was 100% preventable. Simple things like setting a timer, watching the oil closely, keeping the oil at a low temperature setting, keeping a fire extinguisher in an easily accessible location below your stovetop, reviewing how to use the said fire extinguisher, and keeping a non-flammable item, such as a lid, cookie sheet, or scillicone mitts nearby in case the oil flames up. Taking these simple measures can prevent a simple accident from turning into a tragity. And yes, I have actually put out an oil fire. One day, in my college chemistry class, we were doing an experiment that required molten parrafin. Before we started the experiment, my professor went over this specific protocol for extinguishing an oil fire. I got mine too hot, and all of a sudden, big flames shot up from it. I immediately slipped on a scillicone mitt and slid it over the beaker the paraffin was in and held it firmly in place until the fire was out, then turned the hot plate off, leaving the paraffin on the hot plate to minimize the risk of the beaker cracking, spilling the hot paraffin. It certainly was scary, but because I followed this protocol, nobody got hurt, and the fire did not spread.

Yea it’s in my recommendations. Second you can take your pan on fire turn it upside down in the sink and then turn the water on. By using cold water and cooling off the bottom side of any pan it will cool off the other side of the pan. This also works for anything burning or that was sizzling and you don’t want it to be a mess.

I was cooking cod under the grill, something I've done many times. But this time grease must have jumped off it or something. I came back into the kitchen and the top half of the oven was just orange, filled with flames. Because I've never been in that situation before, I panicked, overpanicked I guess. So I immediately called 911, by the time I was finishing the call....the flame was gone xD Now I know that MOST grill fires go out by themselves, but how was I meant to know that it wasnt gonna spread. Im glad I knew not to throw water on it though, could have been a lot worse.

Embarrassingly this happened to me, it was in my back yard though, about 3 1/2 feet from my wall. I was frying fish on my webber, obviously i didn't let the coals burn down enough, my skillet covered the whole grill's surface so i couldn't extinguish the coals, so i ran straight for the water hose..the flame had already reached a good 4 feet, literally engulfing the wall and adding the water just made it double in size for a few seconds before it was fully tamed and out.

Im curious....Why is it flawed?
@MatthewHopkins2010
@MatthewHopkins2010 10 лет назад
rdomholt depends what it is, Sodium bicarbonate maybe, though they say chemical, so could be something else. If it is Sodium Bicarbonate, which I recommend all houses should stock up on (aluminium free of course) then perhaps it won't be an adequate amount and most fires will just be reduced, and not extinguished. But to realise fires more accurately look up the 'fire triangle' in goggle, or home owner hazard advice. Different fires need different materials to extinguish them.
@Diraphe
@Diraphe 9 лет назад
rdomholt Only certain extinguishers are suitable for chemical fires; plus the pressure from the extinguisher is likely to spray flaming oil all over the place.

thats not correct flour can explode or spread fire you should have used baking soda or potassium bicarbonate its debated if salt will work but I think it would have been better than water!

I was sleeping and our maid was banging the door it was 6am we thought it was nothing we opened it she was screaming cos the stove was on fire from the back we moved the stove it made it worse as the fire exploded it was the gas canister which exploded we called our dad he tried to throw a bucket of water on it exploded and he collapsed to the floor we are in somali it happened 30 minutes ago the army base right next to us heard the screaming they helped us to put the fire out by putting damp sand on the fire it somehow stopped the aftermath was melted tiles and burnt stove and a ruined kitchen

The answer: Don't let your fathers, firefighters, or family members teach you to keep your cooking oil above the stove!!

Don't leave cooking unattended. Don't fill the pan more than a third full of oil. And if it catches fire, then just turn off the heat, leave the kitchen, closing the door behind you, get everyone together and get out. Let the fire department deal with the fire.

it can still happen... on a electric stove top, just because there isn't a open flame doesn't mean a grease fire can't happen, they can.

jeesh really people are stupid enough to try and put out a greasefire with water? only in america do they spend huge amounts on anti drug propaganda and nothing on basic education & fire safety. how to properly put out a grease fire is something we learn when we're about 8 years old, and it gets mentioned on multiple episodes of kid tv shows ...

That's so rude of you. Not everyone knows how to take out fires. Rather than calling people stupid, thank the creators and publishers of this video. Share the video and encourage others to educate themselves about keeping safe during a kitchen fire.

Nyxia Noire i'm mainly amazed people aren't thought this in school etc. over here this even gets mentioned on most children's tv shows. this is supposed to be basic knowledge like don't touch live wires or don't put a metal fork in a toaster ...

They forgot to mention one important thing, "prevention" don't leave your stove un-attended.
