A male adult woodpecker carries out several sustained attacks on our blue tit nest in a determined effort to steal the chicks. They hunker down as the woodpecker tries his best to break in, damaging the nest box in the process.
how terrifying is that. imagine someone knockalockin on your house and you're inside just sitting with the knowledge that they'd eat you if they got in.
woodpeckers are cool and all, but the way they try and break into other birds nests is nasty our new nestboxes all have metal doors now at this point might cover the entire damn thing in metal...
Hi Terry, thank you for your question. The box is substantially made of solid wood with a metal plate on the outside around the entrance hole. The nest box is also quite deep, so as you can see the woodpecker wasn't able to reach the chicks with his beak to pull them out. At the end of the day Mother Nature will rule, but we have done what we can to protect the chicks and provide them with an environment which is as safe as we can possibly provide.
