When you deal with dames, you are in the Danger Zone, as the character of crime detector Dennis O'Brien (Hugh Beaumont) learns in his inaugural mystery-drama. The private eye first cracks a case involving a smuggling ring, then tackles an assignment that involves blackmail, murder and film noir's top bad guy, Tom Neal.

I'm glad Hugh Beaumont gave up the thug life, moved to Mayfield, became an advertising exec, married June and raised 2 wonderful, if sometimes troubling, boys. It just goes to show you if you work hard, you can succeed.

I was always suspicious though that he changed his name to Ward Cleaver but you're right he had a criminal history. That explains it.

@happycamper3278 I never liked Jerry Mathers. Ever. Tony Dow was barely tolerable. Barbara Billingsley was charming. Hugh Beaumont was a cool dude. *And I still don't like Jerry Mathers.

@@leelarson107 Jerry Mathers was ok as "The Beaver" the first season or two... but his acting was horrible as he got older. My kitchen table could deliver his lines better than he did. Tony Dow was good throughout the series.

Points well taken Hugh. Pretty risque back in '50-'51. Klever, if somewhat korny dialogue, also has a hole in the plotline. If they'd seized that pocket pistol sooner instead of just passing it around, they'd of had the murder weapon & wife as the culprit.

A tight script with quick, witty banter and a stoic leading man - exactly how I like my noirs! The only thing that gets me is the pacing... this feels more like two separate TV episodes, rather than a continuous feature-length film.

We knew from a scene where Ward Cleaver was filling the cigarette lighters (with lighter fluid remember?) that there was a possibility that Beaver's Dad could be a smoker - But here we see him with pipe and cigarette in hand ! However, if you look closely, you never see any smoke coming out of him !

I'm a long time fan old movies especially film noir, Hough Bomount did as good as anyone could with this script, sadly the police ignoring the obvious and focusing on O'Brien doesn't make sense to me, still a decent movie

Is there a name for these kind of light-hearted detective stories? They're not really noir. Noir is dark, gritty and serious. In these types of detective stories, the hero is never phased by people trying to kill them, or cops trying to send them to the electric chair. They just laugh it off and make wise cracks.
