This is quite a wonderful who-dun-it. Acting is first rate from the wonderful Van Johnson as a blind man around whom the narrative revolves. He is ably supported by the lovely Vera Miles. This is a not-to-be-missed masterpiece from 20th Century Fox, circa mid-50's. I saw the film as a child and got the same thrill when I watched again a few months ago. Van was the master of all genres. Put him in a musical, comedy, drama or any other genre for that matter, and he delivered, never disappointing the audience.

@@pipfox7834 But that doesn't explain his not crashing into things without his cane in a state of panic and rushing around at top speed at the end. I guess they were banking on the viewer being laser focused on Evans whom I guessed was a female because of her diminuative stature and slender frame. I'm surprised she wasn't recognized by Hannon by her perfume. There is another movie, I think it's called "The House on 93rd Street" about Nazi spies and the male cell leader was actually a female who cross-dressed and presented herself as a man at times. This movie was what made me think Evans was actually a woman, but I have to confess, I didn't figure it out until almost the very end. Good movie inspite of all the ads.

A period genre film that sets post-war London in an atmospheric way. Sunshine over the Thames and omnipresent haze. All in fairytale Deluxe Color,. Much as I love this film, I’m still totally puzzled by the plot: what was significant about the QE2 docking on the 10th? Why was the girl in the wheeled chair kidnapped? Who was she? Funny how the killer happened to be outside JM’s flat at the exact moment she walked to the phone box! What was the significance of the doll - there were no drugs or gems inside it and how was it picked up by the Nanny at the ENTRANCE to the park and only later found in the shrubbery? We need Poirot to figure this one out!!

We can answer some of these. Spoiler alert!: Phil had overheard something about meeting Mary (which would put things in motion). He assumed Mary was a person. Then realized they might have been talking about the ship: the Queen Mary, and started wondering if that was the "Mary." It was. They checked the passenger list on the boat and talked to any "Lady" who was on board with children. The girl was kidnapped for ransom. We didn't meet her parents, but we heard the mother scream when she realized her daughter had been taken (we don't know how that happened). They would have been contacted when the girl was securely hidden in the bombed apartment building. The killer knew the ad had been in the paper, so he knew to watch for Janet leaving her place to make the call. He followed her until after she dialed the phone, then did away with her. The doll was in the wheelchair and fell out. We don't know why it was significant, but somehow it was a prop the kidnappers used; McDonald had purchased it in the store. Maybe it was a replica of the doll owned by the girl? Lots of twists and turns for sure. A few things left vague. Like we hope they nab the bar lady, she wasn't nice! And Phil and Jean didn't talk about the fact that he knew by the dead phone line (she didn't) that the killer was on the premises. He faked being unkind to her so she'd leave him and fast. For her safety. Whew. It was good. Fine work by all three leads!

Goofs: Hannon hears a conversation between a man and a woman, and goes home to dictate it himself to his tape recorder. But every time he plays back the tape, it’s not him dictating the conversation, it’s the actual conversation.

There’s so many glitches, goofs, and absurdities in this movie, that it’s simply an unintelligible hot mess.

No, it's not. Van Johnson is making both voices.

@@Claudg2008 It depends where you’re at in the film. There are definitely some segments where it’s clearly not Hannon, but the couple in the pub.

Is that woman Una O'Connor, just like the high strung screeching woman in "The Invisible Man?"

No, the bartendress is Estelle Winwood. She lived to be 101. Born in Kent. She was on stage 1st in London, then on Broadway. When she was younger she expressed a distaste for films. Turned down roles in the 1920s, few in the 30s, no moves in the 40s, but leaned toward television in the 50s. Then she started picking up more movies in the 60s. Una O'Connor was the screamer in "The Invisible Man". She was born in Ireland and worked extensively in theatre before becoming a character actress in film & TV, her movie career was busy. If you want to see a great film with her playing the maid Janet McKenzie watch "Witness for the Prosecution" 1957. Including Elsa Lanchester, Charles Laughton, Marlene Dietrich (far from her regular glamorous self in this) & Tyrone Power. The movie won 5 Oscars. There are 2 big plot twists. Billy Wilder director (who won the Oscar}, wrote the nurse character exclusively for Elsa Lanchester (who won the Oscar) which Agatha Christie never wrote in the original play, there was NO nurse. If you have never seen it & you like this type of movie, you will thank me later. I have watched that movie over 30 times at least. PS Una was hysterically funny in the movie as Janet McKenzie.

Estelle Winwood, born in 1883, active through 1980 - who can top that? she seems so frail but she's steely. age 73, as the pub owner, in an auburn wig. a stage actress since age 5 in Londons West End, she made her Broadway debut in 1916, then did film (1933) and started a prolific career on TV (1946). you never don't notice her. she's always a treat.

@@atthebijou8209 I agree, what a gem! She was also in Mad Woman of Chaillot with Katherine Hepburn, Richard Chamberlain, etc.

Although men were often seen in films wearing overcoats with fur collars i never saw a man in real life wearing one, nor did i ever see a newspaper photo of any man wearing that type of coat . They must have been very expensive, on reflection i have seen old photos of edwardians wearing them, but never in the from the 1950,s onwards. 🎉

Anything - and I mean ANYTHING - with Vera Miles in it is fine by me. She stole ‘Psycho’ from Janet Leigh.
