Here is a full flight from Grand Junction to Aspen, Colorado. We had the first snow of the season, and quite early too. The arrival was absolutely beautiful. On landing, we nearly took out some birds!

I once got pulled over for speeding there and almost went to jail as the state trooper said he clocked me doing 105 mph. A senior patrolman showed up and watched a jet taking off, and figured out the patrolman's radar was hitting a plane taking off and not my old pickup truck.

There is NO such thing as a "near miss". What, you *almost missed*? That's the idea. I think you mean "near midair". That's the proper term for a collision that almost happened but was avoided.

Total novice question, but: When you are approaching takeoff and hit V1 then rotate, It looks like you only have to pull back on the yoke once not pulling back on it and holding it to maintain the flight takeoff pitch of the aircraft. Why is this the standard? Logic would say you pull back on the stick and hold it back untikl you then level off at the desired altitude. Any infor would help me to understand why this works and what is actually happening. Thanks, Great videos.

Interesting comment I caught noting that you would rather be four red rather than four high in Aspen. I haven't had the opportunity yet to fly in and out of Aspen, so I am not well versed in the tribal knowledge there. I can only assume with the rugged terrain, four red may not be ideal. Though I understand the 4 white would be bad due to the high altitude and steep approach resulting in a faster speed increasing the likelihood of an overrun, or in worst cases a single-engine go around on a bad day. I would actually like to know your rational of preferring four red over four white; I am curious, since I haven't flown in or out of there yet.

How come planes always land 15 even when their is a tailwind? The accident aircraft had a tail wind; right?
@CorporatePilotLife
@CorporatePilotLife 3 года назад
It's because of the mountains on the other side of the runway. Coming in on 33 is very difficult. Just about all airplanes have a tailwind limit of 10 knots, so anything over that, and you should land elsewhere.

When I first became a 121 aircraft dispatcher, my first job was at a regional a long time ago and I did a ride in one of our BAe146s into ASE. The CA was one of our DEN check airmen and he was pointing out all of the landmarks as we flew our overhead break maneuver. I felt like I was looking up at people schlussing down the slopes as we were on our midfield break - the WX was like the day you filmed, calm, high thin overcast with a layer of SN on the ground. My favorite domestic Jumpseat...

I flew here once as a teenager to visit an older sibling who was working at Snowmass. I have no memory of the landing or view. Now I have it back. I was living in NY at the time and the culture shock was enormous. To give you an idea of how long ago it was, we were driving to the slope and stopped at a red light. Henry Fonda was in the cross walk.

I have been into Liberal city...I mean Aspen many times...mostly with a visual, but when you are approaching from the North and dealing with real IMC...your zero will pucker and you better have all your marbles stacked up vertically. If not then you are going to be a greasy spot on one of those hills. Aspen is beautiful, but one couldnt pay me enough to live there. What you should do sometime if you have time, is rent a motorcycle or a car and head out Aspen going South to Independence Pass. Once on top, go down the other side to Twin Lakes, then turn around and come back. Dont forget your camera. You get a good view from the plane, but nothing like being down there in the mountains. Fly safe.

Awesome job Landing Shaun. Amazing how Aspen has changed since the 1970’s. We used to go there every summer and traveled all different ways back in the 70’s from NJ. Camped just outside of town for weeks on end. But always made it back to town for a few cold Coors at the Roma and Sheridan. If I recall the airport could only take small single engines. One day I hope to get back out there. Perhaps with Alerion. :) thanks for the trip and some great memories.
