Flying IFR From Aspen Without ATC Radar

We're in Aspen, it's IFR, and our transponder stopped working. On top of that, Aspen's primary radar is out of service. How can we get home? With some help from ATC, and the FARs.
Bose sponsored this video. Without them, it wouldn't have been possible.

oxygen cannulas, basically little tubes that feed oxygen in your nose when you fly high in a plane that doesn't have pressurization. Without those they would pass out from lack of oxygen.
@Boldmethod
@Boldmethod 7 лет назад
Those are nasal cannulas that deliver oxygen. We need to use them above 12,500', and most of our enroute flying in the mountains is above that, so we have them on nearly every flight.
@thawekpl

That's what I thought as I didn't expect that this little thingy is pressurized. Thanks anyways!

You could've simplified this whole scenario by just getting your transponder fixed before your flight? Great video...recently had a large area Radar outage last month east bound out of Texarkana...was issued Victor Airways in my clearance including even over flat land in VMC conditions a 5 mile west vector to TXK VOR. Shortly after departure I was cleared direct HLI (237NM east). When I asked them to confirm they replied "Oh we have your ADSB out position and altitude." For the next hour or so of my flight I got to listen to the other IFR aircraft make position and altitude reports while I monitored traffic on my Foreflight App. Early compliance with an out and in ADSB transponder was the best thing our Club has done since purchasing a Garmin 430 and Aspen 1000 several years ago.

situational awareness of flying into known IFR conditions at an airport with high obstacles and terrain and aircraft performance knowledge would allow you to do that without the help of ATC......except for traffic!

Those position reports are *absolutely not* correct. The format is " over at , , , , , " You also do not report each fix. You report each mandatory reporting point, any points used to define the route, and any points requested by ATC. An example would be "Approach, Piper 321 over Hangtown at 2100 zulu at one one thousand, IFR, estimating Friant at 2112 zulu, Tule next." This format makes perfect sense when you think about it. You may not be able to report as soon as you reach the fix so you give your time over the fix. Next you tell ATC where you are going and when you expect to get there so they can separate traffic based on time. Altitude is self explanatory as is the type of flight plan. The 3rd point is a running check so to avoid mistakes in routing on both ends.
@joshualandry3160
@joshualandry3160 7 лет назад
As an addendum if the flight is IFR and the report is made directly to ATC then you don't need to state it is an IFR flight plan. This is all covered in section *5-3-2* of the AIM

Always enjoy your vids and your production is getting better each time. Since my preference is to listen to the atc comm and see the navigation I found the background music on this one was distracting though. Esp around the 13:35 mark Maybe a little softer so the ATC audio is more clear, or perhaps a different style from the rhythmic base.

To a kid whos never been on a plane in his life but is interested in aviation methods this was more than enlightening. I imagine most people just think planes fly direct lines wherever their going and thanks not only to the history lesson in this video but the amazing graphics and editing I now have a much greater understanding of VFR flying and what goes into it. It makes aviation videos more interesting and I am truly greatful for those in the aviation field who make videos like these. If I ever have a desire and ability to actually get licensed to fly Ill have a much better idea of what to expect. Thank you for the video!

This flight was filed IFR, not VFR, and followed IFR rules during flight under mostly VFR conditions (pretty scenery). Once Denver ATC took over, the final was technically IFR but wasn't the full IFR approach (with glideslope and runway lights, etc...)
